Discussion: PAX- Seattle Aug 29-31st
I gotta say the costume give outs are great. What I dont like however is roughly 80-90% of the player will never have access to them. Much of the players are minors in other states, so pretty much no chance for them. Then people like me, with a wife/kids/job who can't make it due to several hundred reasons.
At least offer us a costume pack that include these items. I would have no problems paying for it on mine and my wifes account.

I would prefer similar appearing costume parts that I can use on my characters and set the colors on, myself. But I do understand a lot of folks have been wanting this and other of the halloween temp costumes. Be patient, as soon as they get enough people jumping up and down and offering to throw money at them they will toss 2 or 3 of them into a 9.99 pack for you.

or they could offer it simultaneously and make thousands of dollars

I think it's pretty crappy that they're giving out a permanent in-game item that everyone isn't reasonably able to get.

Read my lips: its a marketing hook.
Its a great way to bridge awareness of the game in non-gaming communities - plus it is a cool incentive to offer potential new subscribers that've never played the game before. I mean, hey - look how much you guys are going gaga all over it. If its making you druel, just think how well it'll work to snag new subscribers.
So yeah, I agree with the Marketing gimmick - however, I think its a bad idea to advertise this on the front page. Yeah it raises visibility of the event for a select few that are willing and/or able to go, but it alienates the larger population who have been wanting some kind of access to this costume option for years.
Hey ho, life goes on. Come back at Halloween and be pleasantly suprised at what you earn from trick-or-treating (at least that's my guess).

From what I've heard of SDCC, unless they changed tacts, this isn't exactly a Market Hook for getting new players since several people I know tried to get one and were told "no" since they weren't already subscribers. They were only giving away the codes to current players (or people who said they were currently playing).
EDIT: However, it's made someone on E-bay a goodly amount of cash, he's thus far put up two that rolled in at $200 or more. So, if you REALLY want one, someone will be kind enough to gouge you on E-bay for it.

Thank you for the continued feedback. We are listening and sending it along to the proper channels.
In the end we wanted to create a special gift for those folks that come out to our booth and show us love. Hopefully it is something we can continue to do as we grow and reach out to shows and live gatherings in the future.

Ex
See y'all at PAX!

I'm on the this is unfair to non-west coast people bandwagon. Great for people in that area, shaft for anyone who is not. Using developer time to add content (however non-game changing it is) that players are not on equal footing to obtain is a real PO factor for subscribers. Something NCNC might want to think about.

This is a permenant version of the temporary power you can earn during the Halloween event. It simply changes your appearance into that of the PPD Hardsuit.
It is not a set of player costume pieces and it required very very little time to create as the PPD Hardsuit was already made and the power to change you into it was already made for the Halloween event.

I wondered that after I posted. I will look forward to being able to obtain it in the near future then...

Forgot the obligatory and my first "First after a Redname"

As I said, I had it last year. But those powers only last a few days. They also can be a little buggy and detoggle you when zoning if they are active when you zone.
Even still, way cool.
great giveaway!! I wont be able to get one since I'm a south east player but still cool to see you guys do this kind of stuff.
I think it's a cool giveaway. These are easy for them to code, since they already had things set up for the Halloween event... so it's simultaneously something cool that most players will appreciate or covet, and it's nothing that is game-changing or very difficult for them to do.
Also, I've never been to PAX and never felt the need to go, but since I live in the Seattle area and the hardsuit looks awesome, I'm suddenly wondering what would a 1-day pass would cost me? ^_^

This is still a game that had no economy to speak of for years. The only currency was "cool". Marketing is putting an example of the traditional currency in the hands of relatively few, using a criterion which is (right or wrong) seen as exclusionistic, and most apt to frustrate or disappoint the players who still approach the game in terms of the original currency rather than the post-market currency.
If you could pass that along to Marketing, along with the suggestion that a time-limited version of these might not cause this level of consternation, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

They gave the Freakshow costumes from the last one they went to for those who couldn't go, but only a certain amount of people could get it, if they have a log in to Massively.com or made a new account and then posted a comment.

I would be encouraged that one could be picked up at Ebay, but at this kind of price, that's no more an option for most of us than a trip to Seattle.

Looks like $30.
Soooo... is the hardsuit worth $30.00? ^_^
I mean yeah, I'd get to wander around a few hours on top of that and meet people, but that's my only real reason for thinking of going.

And this is what happens when you offer "once in a lifetime, be there or miss out" deals. You get scalpers, I don't think this is a good idea.
Still it is cheaper than the $1500 air ticket would be.

Considering that some people on other boards were contemplating spending $150+ on the Freakshow costume, I'm guessing yes.

Okay, I was sort of on the fence but now I KNOW I'll be attending PAX.
I MUST have the PPD costume.
Oh, and I guess it might be fun to meet the crew too.

ok not to sound like an [censored] but this exclusive stuff is getting to be a bit ridiculous. first I love the CoX game and have been a log time player. I understand that giving something away special to people to attend these events but are you planning on releasing these to the rest of the community after x amount of time has passed, like as a costume pack kind of like the wedding pack?

Oh yes. Because god forbid, there be something neat out there that not all of us can get.
Because, y'know, I've been a long time player too. And I have no way of going to PAX, even though I want that Hardsuit. But I don't have this level of entitlement that makes me feel like if I can't have everything, then it shouldn't be in the game.

Just look on Ebay they are selling the ones from ComicCon. Someone paid $295.00 but for the most part they are going for around $45.00.
I'm quite sure some industrious people will be selling them. If NcSoft was smart they'd go ahead and apply the codes to your account at the conference to keep this from happening.
