NCsoft Response to City of Heroes player and fan suggestions
Just hang in there guys, the corporate world is complex and has very odd rules. The best thing that we can do is remein vocal but responsible and one of the best ways that everone can contribute to is to keep playing.
Unless the negotiations were formalized, I doubt they are covered by confidentiality clauses. However, its likely all of the participants are unlikely to discuss sensitive negotiations held in confidence and off the record anyway. Doing so would damage your own personal reputation in that area.
Now, if one party were to publicly lie about the content of those negotiations, all bets would be off. |
If NCsoft doesn't want to play ball, than I would fully support a kickstarter for a brand new Hero MMO developed by the staff that we have come to respect and love. I would wait for a few years to have a new one if I knew it was coming.

I really hope they do not expect us to go quietly.
They saw what happened when they first made the announcement. Just what did they think we were going to do when they dropped THIS bomb?!
I, for one, am done giving them the benefit of the doubt and holding my tongue.

I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
The land's only worth $100k if someone's willing to buy it for that. But I find it so astronomically unlikely that NCSoft could make more on accelerated depreciation than any remotely possible offer that I find the entire analogy completely unrealistic.
If the land was actually worth $100k its impossible no one would offer you more than $30k. If you can't get more than $30k, its probably because your ability to estimate the value of land is egregiously bad. |
Market logic has very little merit in this thread because all the facts are not present.
Back on topic...I am not surprised by NCsoft's response to the players. I am disappointed that they could not come to some other type of arrangement. Whether their attempts were genuine or not is irrelevant in my mine. The fact of the matter now is on November 30, 2012 NCsoft will continue with the their original plan and close City of Heroes. I was sincerely hoping that our petition, emails, and spotlight would sway NCsoft. Again, I am extremely disappointed in this situation and still have a bit of hope for some sort of last minute rescue as stated in an earlier post.

But you didn't add in the potential cost the massive bad press will put into any future deals.

Of course the majority of those games have single player modes.
And many MMOs have closed as well but I haven't heard of any sustained bad press about of the publishers who pulled the plug. Link Link Link
Yea, we can make noise. We can try to intervene when we see someone looking at an NCSoft product in a store. But in a year or two when Blade and Soul and WildStar come out, how many of us will remember to do it?
Maybe it's all Cryptic/Paragon's fault the way we feel. If they didn't let us to personalize our characters to such an extreme that they felt like old friends we wouldn't be so damn attached to them. Maybe if NCSoft didn't buy out Cryptic's share and kept the game going for another 5 years, maybe we wouldn't feel so much loss knowing they are going to be taken away.
I'm sure some of you will make noise about this. The question is for how long and whether it affects enough people to make a difference.

Honestly you over estimate the cost of bad press. Sure we can tell our friends at relatives, warn them about getting involved with NCSoft properties but would they listen? Would they care? Look we couldn't get them interested in the game for more than a few months. And it's not like NCSoft is the only company that pulled the plug on MOGs. Console game companies (well EA) routinely shut down older franchises to force players to upgrade to the most recent <sport> <year> game or FPS war sim. Link Link Link.

I would rather try.
It's over. Accept it and move on.
And before anyone jumps on me like a school of rabid pirranas, let me just say that for the first week and a half after the announcement all I could do was cry. I went through basically all of the stages of grief since that accounement came to pass, I am now at acceptance.
NC doesn't want to sell to us; accept it. Can't accept it? Oh well. I'm no longer wasting my energy on something that isn't going to be magically saved. What happened with this game sucks rocks, but really... there isn't much you can do to make NC change their mind. If they don't want to sell to us then they won't. If they want a few million then that is what we'll have to pay.
Just... there is too much false hope flying around at this stage. Just let it go. Appreciate what we've had for 8 years. OKay...I'm done. Feel free to bash away.

Remember the people that make the decisions probably dont read the forums, or go to game magazine sites, and other underground blogs. If they did they probably would see more people disagree then the petition that was built and probably brought to their attention.
And Like Xmas said and in one of my post at an earlier date about this subject, this is nt the first time and wont be the last.
If we are going to do something, stop clowning around and lets get it. We have to go to them and get out of the internal gaming community and try to get them to understand on their level and mind process. Right now they hear us, yes, so they say, but we have to give them a reason to listen. And a person saying they are not going to buy another NCSoft product probably wont cut it. One they wont miss 100,000 american/eu players compared to the hundreds of millions they have in Asia, and two they probably already figured that majority of COX players are not going to be in the mood to buy another game from them at the moment. And even if someone was somehow able to hurt their pockets, remember the top is the last to go and they sure as hell wont revive a game that they just cut because they started losing money. Nope, they will just fire some more people and kill off a couple of more games to balance the sheet. Buisness. Also got to understanding why a company would want to hold onto IP rights. Many companies do it and NCSoft did not invent holding onto something valuable.

We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you've sent in support of the game. |
It has not been an easy decision for us to close Paragon Studios® and prepare to shut down City of Heroes. |
We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. |
City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note. |
Once again, we will be holding events throughout the process of preparing for the game's end, and we encourage players and fans of the franchise to join forces and enjoy their time in a game that we've enjoyed supporting for more than eight years. |
Yeah, it is. Your winking emoticons and 24/7 presence on the forums won't change anything, GG.

The healthiest way to approach this right here. You can't force someone to do anything with what's theirs. You can't make them take less than what they want for something they don't have to part with. You guys did a good job of making noise. Now, go enjoy the damn game. SHOW your respect for the work that went into the game by experiencing it. Standing in AP and not even playing the game isn't going to give you any fulfilment. Play it like it just came out, savor every minute. Grab a PUG and have fun. Remember it the right way, not just this crap.

Or, if you truly want to go the other way, then be remorseful that we as players didn't do enough to keep this game alive. We didn't hit the streets to shout it's praise. We only had that drive to decry our unfair treatment from NCSoft after they threatened to take our game away.
I choose the first category. It stings less and enables better growth.
We should all approach life in this fashion. Don't live based on regret or remorse. Live based on unashamed vulnerability and complete lack of inhibition. If NCSoft isn't remorseful, why should we be?

I haven't sent one penny Sony Online Entertainment's way since they screwed up Star Wars Galaxies. This response only ensures the same for NCSoft.

Sadly, the way I envision the negotiations going is that NCSoft's management in a face-saving maneuver to say that they tried but failed, stood on unreasonable terms.
Personally, I'd be willing to invest in efforts to purchase the studio back from them.
If anyone knows who to contact to continue to pursue purchasing the game -- who's actually gotten a response from NCSoft corporate -- please PM me!
I don't think they are lying lying, more like just saying the side of the story that makes them look less bad.

Sorry NCSoft, I'm not buying GW2 or Wildstar, never another penny of my money is going to a company with your horrible ethics (the Garriott case and closing down a profitable game with only a 3 month sunset having had a goodly amount of money off me for paragon points relatively recently which I haven't yet spent, looks like 6000+ will go to waste).

Well that was a politely worded kiss-off.
Until the servers go dark, I'll enjoy the game as much as I can. Then, down the road, when people ask "what games did you play?" I'll be able to say "City of Heroes."

Either they are flat out lying, or the guy that runs a small studio and didn't get a reply to his enquiry is (can't remember which set of boards I saw this on atm, if I find it, will link it).

I guess what you're implying is that some guy made them an offer? Is there any reason to believe said offer was a) serious and b) reasonable? I'm guessing it was neither.
Lots of interesting perspectives at Titan. I really do think this is an effort at getting us to shut up.
