NCsoft Response to City of Heroes player and fan suggestions
Keep your powder dry, until we hear from Brian Clayton and Tony V...
If Brian Clayton (or somebody else at the negotation table) says, it's hopeless, then we move to Plan Z...but for now...
We've got two months left until shutdown. Enjoy as much of the game as you can, at least for the next eight weeks...
We also don't know WHO is responsible for the nnouncement, it could have been someone at Paragon. Try to keep level heads guys.
I think I trust a red name than those people that I dont know but that may be my folly. Who is Brian Clayton?
But most companies are itchy about selling IP rights. As someone mentioned in TitanNetwork, some companie just like to hold on to their work. And also as someone mentioned here, maybe the offers wasn't exactly "serious".

This. Also it is possible someone could buy up the game after the shutdown happens

This isn't the end of CoH.
If that is NC Softsd response - heres mine - never will I spend money on anything they are involved in and I will tell all the other gamers I know about this. In fact they are damaging other games because who wants to spend money on something that can be taken away on a whim or some reevaluation of priorities.
I have no joy in being correct in my initial, (most likely outcome) pessimistic assessment of this situation and only admiration and respect to those who worked so diligently for a different outcome with NCSoft.

First of all, to be clear, this is from NCSOFT. I posted it here because I want the community to continue to be informed as to what's going on.
I share the sentiment that was shared above: continue to enjoy the game. It's what we (Paragon) worked so hard to create with you.
Lastly, I really need you guys to keep the conversation as civil as possible. Frustration, anger, disappointment and sadness are all understandable emotions to be feeling right now but I can't support comments that come across as threatening or insulting in nature. That goes for both players and employees of Paragon and/or NCSOFT.
Thank you,
Jessie

Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.

Let's be realistic for a second. I have a $300k house (CoX), I want to get out of it and move. I entertain offers, but all I get are offers that are less than what I could get for demoing the house and selling the land (tax deduction for the loss). People are offering me $30k when the land is worth $100k alone.
Is this a realistic offer? Does this mean I wasn't willing to sell, or that no serious buyers were coming along (ones with enough money to make it worthwhile for me to keep the house in tact and sell instead of demoing and selling the land)? |
If the land was actually worth $100k its impossible no one would offer you more than $30k. If you can't get more than $30k, its probably because your ability to estimate the value of land is egregiously bad.

"Brian Clayton is the General Manager of Paragon Studios and the Executive Producer of the "City of" franchise, which includes City of Heroes, City of Villain, City of Heroes: Going Rogue and City of Heroes: Freedom. Brian was the executive producer of the "City of" franchise with NCsoft since the game's inception, and became General Manager of the new NorCal studio once the "City of" IP was fully acquired by NCsoft in 2009."

The land's only worth $100k if someone's willing to buy it for that. But I find it so astronomically unlikely that NCSoft could make more on accelerated depreciation than any remotely possible offer that I find the entire analogy completely unrealistic.

To the Paragon Studios staff, thanks for everything, you all rock, and I am sorry you are losing your jobs.
To NCSoft, **** you too. I will not play any of your games in the future. May your *** hole grow tastebuds.

Saw it coming. They wouldn't sell to us because we can't afford to plunk down a few million bucks.
Still... no one can say that we haven't tried or made a damn good effort.
It just wasn't meant to be. *sighs*

Regarding the "fan suggestions" portion of the header...
I would start from scratch; if the money was there to buy the IP, then it should be there to start a new one. Learn from past mistakes and use it as a chance to start with a better foundation that allows for better building (primarily engine and platform).
I would refocus future resource investment into accessibility instead of niche and exclusivity.
Maybe the new IP won't run on Android or other mobile OSes, however, an exportable basic character creator, base builder and/or mission architect might. The 'Paragon Market' and in-game auction house might.
[Can you imagine an app that would allow you to build whatever; wherever and whenever (that, in itself, is $ waiting to happen) and then being able to export to the game at your convenience?]
I would definitely reinvest time into (R2P - Ready To Play) PvP as a solid companion effort to the core game and make it accessible to multiple platforms. Give the Arena it its own server; allow players to start at max level, get rid of the enhancement system in favor of a revamped insp system, goal/achievement system and match parameter system.
[PWN somebody from my Samsung Galaxy (that I have yet to own)? Yes, please.]
Create longevity and a safety net for everyone at the start; build for player convenience. Allow for stand-alone, LAN and the full MMO experience (with the individual as the focus). Allow for import/export/transfer. Allow graphical updates to be optional (so that the game remains accessible for everyone (not just for those that can spend for high end parts). Make sure the engine is flexible.
blah, blah, blah, etc.
Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
