NCsoft Response to City of Heroes player and fan suggestions
There's this post today at Titan from Mercedes Lackey (Victoria Victrix), no doubt crossposted here to the official forums a few times already: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.....html#msg76158
If said sources are correct, then at least part of the WHY is explained and efforts to Save COH can bear fruit only after the "sunset" 11/30 midnight Pacific time (or 12/1 3 a.m. EST). The more who remain committed to taking reasonable customer/player/fan action(s) after City of Heroes officially ends, the better our chances for a revival and I hope a full and complete resurrection.

You lost me as a customer forever NC Soft and I think the same can be said for many of my fellow CoH players from the past 8 years. I will never buy anything you are involved with.

NCSoft: We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property.
Kyle: If nobody wants to buy it, then why don't you put it out on the Internet for free?
(pause)
Kyle: Well?
NCSoft: What was the question again?
Kyle: If you really think no company in the world wants to buy your game, then why don't you put it on the Internet for free?
NCSoft: Get out of here, Kyle, I'm trying to go to the bathroom!
*sigh* Well, that is what I expected, but I had hoped I would be wrong. I don't buy the line about them being unable to sell it, though. We know there were buyers.

i just got this off the titans page...Today a 31 page pitch package aimed at persuading Disney Interactive to acquire City of Heroes arrived for both the CEO of Disney Productions and the CEO of Disney Interactive via Express Mail.
Ammon, Rae, Quinch and I--Internet Marketing Specialist, UK Journalist, Senior IT Tech and writer--put together a 31 page pitch package aimed specifically at Disney, to attempt to persuade the Mouse that picking up City of Heroes is in their best interest as well as ours. We had the advice and oversight of two senior members of the former Paragon Studios team--mostly to tell us what we could and could not say. Should there be an answer, it should be directed to Brian Clayton, the Paragon Studios manager, since we specified that we four had no power to do anything, and he is the man with all the answers.
Now it's your turn.
We have to impress the 900 lb gorilla--The Mouse himself--that buying the City is going to be good for them. We have to show them that we are loyal, passionate, dedicated, and mature. And we have money to spend. Remember, these are executives who are not impressed if genuine movie stars approach them with a pitch for something less than amazing.
We have to show the Mouse that in the right hands, City of Heroes can become the crown jewel among their electronic games.
so am i really to believe this is done by people who "love" the game? disney? seriously? surely there has to be someone else to go to...we all know exactly how disney will screw the game up...pirates of the carribean was loaded with spyware...i personally had a trojan pop up from the installer...and that is on the light side of what can be expected from them...this is a really bad idea...find someone else...

Not to be a downer, but I think there is next to zero chance of Disney buying CoH. Disney owns Marvel. Marvel has their own MMO in development. Disney would have no reason to purchase another superhero brand. Unless somehow they could roll CoH into the Marvel universe. I just don't see that happening. It would dilute their market for the Marvel stuff. I think the only way they would do something with it, would be to buy it up, then replace everything in the game with Marvel heroes and stuff. I can't see them investing in it though and just dumping all the development work they have done with their existing Marvel MMO.
It would certainly be interesting if it were to happen though. A company that large could inject a lot of life into the game, and it might actually get some real marketing done with it, instead of relying mostly on word of mouth.

This comes up a lot, so excuse the copypaste;
On the topic of "Why the hell would Disney buy CoH when they already have Marvel?"
Back at you; why would Valve make L4D when they already have TF2? For that matter, why would NCsoft invest in a Generic Grind 5 when they already have Generic Grinds 1-4?
Simple. Just because two franchises share a common component {superheroes, in this case} doesn't mean they will necessarily compete with each other.
Marvel Heroes is essentially a Diablo knockoff.
Marvel Arena is a PvP-only kind of deal.
City of Heroes... is neither of those.
If they buy CoH, they'll be able to cater to just about every gamer demographic even remotely interested in superheroes. Not only that, since their purchase of Marvel showed they know how to market the superhero genre, it plays to their strengths to boot. And considering that one of the damning causes of CoH's obscurity was an eternal lack of advertising, if Disney even thought about marketing the game, it would probably pull in more newcomers than the game had in its entire lifetime.
Not to mention Disney markets itself as a family-friendly company, and considering the contrast between the kind of toxicity you tend to see in other MMOs and CoH, it also plays into their established strategy, especially in light of how many parents play the game with their kids of family.
To add to the appeal, the superhero trend doesn't seem to show any sign of slowing down, so a pre-built, heavily developed and optimized game franchise with a metric crapton of content, in addition to AE is practically a license to print money.
So yeah. It's a long shot, but as far as anyone outside Disney accounting department can tell, we've got a lot of hooks set out, enough to show that we're worth the investment. All that's left to do is show that they're attached to people with wallets.

The kids aspect of Disney is of little relevance to me.

i make stuff...
What about tweaking and repackaging the game a bit as a stand alone game that can be run on PCs and game consoles such as the PS3 or X-box? Multiplayer co-op options could be worked in, if not through servers, then at least IP to IP network connectivity. It's an idea at least, and a way for NcSoft to capitalize on what they consider a waning market by creating a new product out of the old, as well as give die hard fans a copy of COH to play for as long as they like...?

Nice piece - yeah, Cric does good work, pretty quickly (and not costing an arm and a leg, either.)
I'm getting other pieces done at the moment - unfortunately I don't think I'll see any others arrive before Friday.
That would be possible, but it would be a new game and you would have to buy it ,even you owned the original game, it would be a single player game , the multiplayer would be Doom and Quake style (manly PvP amomg little groups 8-10 characters at most) very few updates (if any) and once you had reached end game it would have a very little replay value.

And buying a new game is no different than people haveing to buy Madden every year for the updated rosters, or at least used to had to do.
I think the port to single player wouldnt affect much besides the number of people running around, which may not be a bad thing.
