NCsoft Response to City of Heroes player and fan suggestions

I haven't responded at all to any of this, not even in the 162-page long megathread that's still going. If anyone that can respond in an official capacity is reading, I urge you to do so:

What is your price? How much are you willing to sell the IP for? You have over 20,000 potential investors, if the petition is any indication. I know that if it could save the game, I would be willing to commit real money to a kickstart designed to buy the IP so we can save the game. If the playerbase (hereafter referred to SaveCoh inc) were to shop around after IP purchase, I am certain we could find a publisher.

Give us that chance. We're not asking for anything for free. We want to know, what is the price tag? If you couldn't find a buyer, you have nothing to lose by telling us. You've seen how dedicated the potential investor pool is. I am not joking when I say we could do this. There is no reason not to sell unless you don't want to see the game survive. I don't care about your reasons for sunsetting CoH right now, I promise you. We are way, way past blame. All I care about is using the time we have constructively, and this is our best hope for saving the franchise.

I am urging you, tell us what it would take.

Get ebola and die, you worthless scumsucking parasites. I hope all of you are left destitute, broken and alone until finally, you choose to end yourselves in a filthy gutter to be eaten by rats.

We hired a PR guy to blow some smoke up your collective butts, because that's how much we care. If this was not an easy decision to make, we wouldn't be able to suddenly fire everyone on a random Friday. In the end, keeping the game is not a way to make the most amount of money with the least amount of effort, so it is useless. We are not in the business of making art, after all.

If we assume that NCSoft has floated offers - and that's a REALLY BIG assumption - then they were asking for substantially more than what any potential buyers were willing to put down.

But this is not exactly news. When it comes to NCSoft, it's always been about the bottom line. Just look at Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, Dungeon Runners, Exteel, and probably a few more I can't recall right now. All games that could have become profitable and stable if given time to properly establish themselves within the Western market. Let's see how long they stay firmly behind GW2 once profits begin to decline due to lack of box sells, and how much of a chance they give Wildstar if it isn't insanely popular in both NA and Asia right from the start.

To be fair to NCSoft, turning down offers of cash from something that you were just going to just throw away must be pretty exhausting.

Oh, I'm sure they dreamed up an unrealistically high number, wrote it down on the back of a napkin and watched the reader(s) choke as s/he read it and walked off giggling.

When normal human beings talk about "all available options" they are usually referring to the real ones, not the unreal ones.

I dare say NCSoft is hoping this will placate us and make us go away. Sadly, we're not going anywhere. We'll be playing City of Heroes to the end and when you do pull the plug we won't be good little rabbits and move to another NCSoft product, we'll just leave.

First, Hit Streak, thanks for getting this info to us as soon as you got it, it's no fun being the messenger and I appreciate the work you're doing on this.

Now I'm going to vent.

********. Utter 100% stinking crap. Their actions speak louder than words, and their actions shout that they don't give a flying **** for the game or its history or its players and that all our feedback was filed in the nearest trash can.

"We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property" except saying "Yes". If they really wanted to strike a deal, any reasonably bright businessman could come up with something. "OK, you don't have the cash to buy the assets outright. So here's our deal. We will license all the existing IP, code, and customer data for a nominal fee, say 10K per year, plus say 10% of any profits. This license is for five years, renewable for another five years, and at any point you can buy the assets for $x." Bingo bango there's the deal.

Instead, they took a dump on the players and said "screw you, we don't care, game is closing".

To hell with them.

The most beautiful thing (from NCSoft's point of view) is that everyone that ever sat down to negotiate anything is likely bound by an NDA. They can now claim anything and no one can legally refute it... scumbags

I don't hold much hope for any of the NCSoft western operations. In a few years I am sure we will be seeing most the operations being taken back to Korean soil. We will have to see if GW survives (in the west) that transfer
I doubt they would send that message in the clear, so to speak. That's the sort of thing that happens in other far more opaque and deniable ways.

This sounds more like a "suitable time" message to me.

We Do Not Forgive, We Do Not Forget

Masses, assembled to save an online community and world. Think for a few more minutes here, if you REALLY want to piss off this many people.
We aren't asking you to keep a game that isn't profitable. CoH showed profit this quarter. We are asking you to keep the game the IS profitable, and eliminate the unprofitable one if need be.

If I need to I will speak ferengi here since you seem as greedy, and this is likely all you understand...

Rule of Acquisition #57 Good customers are as rare as latinum. Treasure them.

We are good, amazingly loyal customers, and you are deciding we aren't worth the paper you didn't print that announcement out on.
I am appalled at your lack of business acumen. Profit is Profit, Loss is Loss, cut AION and KEEP CoH!

PS: went a lil trekkie on you there in the middle, but it applies I'm honestly starting to see NC Soft in my head as the Ferengi from Star Trek...

Well, some people get exhausted just thinking, so that might very well be it. They thought about selling the IP then took a nap because the process of thinking was exhausting.

As I've mentioned to a few folks here already, I'd made the decision to do no new business with NCSoft, ever again, almost three years ago. As much as I'd have been happy to keep playing, and paying for, CoH pretty much indefinitely, nothing that happened here was going to change that decision.

They have, in effect, fired me as a customer.

I will move on. I will always remember fondly the CoH players and Paragon developers, even the ones I argued with. I don't argue with people I don't care about.

If folks want to look me up "out there, somewhere", those places are in my sig. Take care, folks.

John

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

I can't believe that they are saying that it's over on the negotiations. It's not over till the servers are turned off. It sounds like a ploy to get us to back the pressure off of them. They know the bad press we are causing them is going to cost more in advertising than what the game is worth to recover from.

Unless the negotiations were formalized, I doubt they are covered by confidentiality clauses. However, its likely all of the participants are unlikely to discuss sensitive negotiations held in confidence and off the record anyway. Doing so would damage your own personal reputation in that area.

Now, if one party were to publicly lie about the content of those negotiations, all bets would be off.
