NCsoft Response to City of Heroes player and fan suggestions
Yeah, that is when it will get real interesting.
But I wouldnt get the hopes up too high. I mean 21,000 signed a petition is many in the gaming world. And then have to hope that the gaming world cares as much as the players of this game does. Remember even though NCSOft killed Tab. Rasa. many still played here regardless and the players of that game was just as pissed as the players of this game are now. Yet, people only mention that NCSOft killed that game, yet, played for years and put a lot of time into their product again. When this game goes down, this is another chance to show that the players are dead serious and not just whining today until a new shiny game come out and they flock to give NCSoft their money again, like the 5-6 past times. If they stay true to their guns and truely do not bother with NCSOft, then maybe it might put a nick into their money flow. But the way other games shut down and the market kept going, I say within 6 months, it will be buisness as usual and NCsoft will still be around like nothing even happened like COX never existed. Unless the movement stops playing around, posturing, talking and get to the grinding stone and walk it. Or else, it's another group of angry players that will either fade away or buy another game under NCSoft belt, especially if they pull a low blow and bring out COH2. Then that is when it really get to see who was serious about not giving NCSoft another dime. |
You brought up a good point about Tabula Rasa but forgot to mention this one fact: Tabula Rasa was not anyone's FIRST choice of MMo. Most of their players had, at one point in time, started off as a Coh/V'er so it was simply trying out a new product. When it was shut down, the good ol' standby City was still around to jump back in. Now that COH is gone(sadness), there is no "fallback" option.
I'm going to go on record and say this: If NCsoft does come out with COH2, and this is all just a bad publicity stunt, I will be the first to sign up. Bad business decisions be damned, I still love COH. I will grab my main 50's, re-roll the rest, and jump right back into late night and early morning runs of the new content. I have looked at all the other MMO;s on the market and NONE capture not a single iota of my imagination. I was gonna jump ship to WOW but I really hate the fantasy aspect(Pandas???..really??). COH is, in my honest opinion, one of the most underrated MMO's on the market. DCU?-I hate every character except for Batman. Marvel Universe?- Good premise but unless they're willing to jump away from the canon and get gritty, it's not for me. I like tanking against Freakshow and blasting the hell outta Malta....
Hoping for either a sale of COH or a rollout of COH2.....

Otherwise, I'm done with NCSoft, and likely shy/sorta-done with the other big MMOs/MMOers. I mean really; WoW; King-Fu Panda time? Jumped the shark at all? I don't give it 2 more seasons before it shrinks seriously, or just goes away. Unless the whole MMO market goes south so bad that bad is still the best option.. But, not for me..
I'll try a few, and hope to be impressed, but I'm not holding my breath..

Sure WoW might be gone in two years, but I doubt they'll go from
EVERYTHING IS GREAT NEW EXPANSION IN 15 DAYS PRE-ORDER NOW
to
NEVERMIND CLOSING DOWN IN 3 MONTHS
in 24 hours. I mean what kind of company would do that? (Besides NCSOFT?)
Different company different policies.
I think EA and Sony have shut down games in more abrupt manners than NCSoft have done here. Yet, there are companies that let a game rot to death for a year before pulling the plug.
Some games are advertised as on the verge of being released, people waiting, then all of a sudden they cancel out before it even goes live. While some let the game go live knowing it's a stillbirth and let it fall apart months after that.

I find it absolutely fascinating that this game is going down while other lesser games of the same genre continue to function. How on earth does Champions Online continue while City of Heroes vanishes? What a horrible joke this is on all of us who have been loyal to the game through the years. Frustrating to say the least. And please do not patronize us by telling us you've exhausted all efforts to sell the game to another company. You're telling us this within a month of the sunset announcement! Get back to work and get it done. No excuses, just results.

I doubt anyone from NCSoft is reading this thread because we all know they don't give a flying fig about us BUT ....
Posts NCSoft's Korean and English Facebook pages are disappearing. Not rude posts just "Save city of Heroes" in English/Korean. They've posted there "please stop with the negative and hurtful comments". So they ARE noticing they've racked off a large amount of articulate and vocal people.
I vote that we keep doing that.
Not just to NCSoft but Nexon - their largest shareholder. Also to their business partners; warn Logitech, NVidia and all the others that the bad business practices of their partners are going to directly affect sales of THEIR products.
We're still fighting after two months. I don't EVER intend to shut up about the way NCSoft has treated CoX, the Devs or the players. If we ALL keep going, that's a LOT of noise.
We're having an effect via Facebook and the media and their stocks. So we all keep doing it.
Oh and NCSoft, if you ARE reading this ... you have NO idea what you started. If the servers go dark, this won't end. It will be the beginning.

Ive been holding off posting about the impending closure of City Of Heroes, since Ive felt too emotional about the situation to properly put my thoughts into words. I sincerely hope that the Save Our City campaign succeeds, but Im feeling rather pessimistic about the outcome
From what I can see, it appears that NCSoft has not tried very hard to sell off the CoX Franchise, and seems to have ignored multiple purchase offers. If NCSoft is indeed experiencing financial difficulties, as some people have suggested, then I should think that a sale of assets would keep them afloat more successfully than absorbing them internally.
NCSofts public relations response to the closing of the City Of Heroes has been very poor. This is no way to run a successful business. In fact, they will be losing me as a customer permanently. I have no wish to invest my time and money in products that a company will so readily close down.
In closing this message, Id like to publicly thank the entire Paragon Studios Team for developing and supporting such a fantastic game. You folks are great!

It was the farming that killed the game!!!!!!

NCSoft, I do hope you're reading this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
There is little that can be said, little that I can add to our struggle to save City of Heroes. Nevertheless, say and add it I shall.
NCSoft made the decision, however poor a decision it might be, to shut down the game. Certainly that is their perogative; they own the IP, the code, the engine, the servers, everything. It is entirely their choice to do whatever they want. And it's understandable: they are in classic "business panic" mode. One quarter of reduced profits possibly affecting their inflated yearly bonuses frightened them so much that they decided to shut down their lowest-profiting game. "A permanent solution to a temporary problem," I believe someone said. Then, to compound the error, instead of selling off the IP -- thereby not only making a profit, but diffusing the anger directed toward them -- they refuse to entertain any offers and stand fast to their committment of closing down the game.
However.
What NCSoft apparently fails to realize is that gamers are by nature very loyal, but also very capricious. Choice is a two-way street. You choose to shut down the single most versatile MMO in history? A game that offers experiences no other games of its kind can? Fine, I choose to never spend money on another of your titles again. To paraphrase 'Rescue Me', "This isn't a threat, it's a ******* promise." No Aion, no Guild Wars 2, no Blade and Soul, nothing with an "NCSoft" anywhere in the credits.
NCSoft, for whatever reason -- be it bad management, pride, fear of losing face, or just sheer bull-headed stubbornness -- is incable of realizing what they are losing. There is no other game that allows you to change your character's appearance -- costume, hair, powers -- whenever you want, with the variety available here. It took six years for any other game to have a character creator even slightly equivalent to CoH, and that was Eve Online's "Incursion" expansion. There is no other game that allows you to be anything you want. Three-foot tall, insect-winged, axe-wielding pyrokinetic? Do-able. Mysterious energy being from before time began now inhabiting the body of an eight-foot tall steampunk robot? Do-able. Rail-thin zombie who punches people so hard they float through the air with the greatest of ease? Do-able. We don't want to just be a human or an orc. We don't want to just be a Jedi Knight. We don't want to just be a superhero in training. We want to be anything; we want to be everything. This is what CoH is, this is why we are enraged at the thought of losing it.
In short, NCSoft has a property that lets people do things that even three or four other games put together cannot do. A property that was turning a profit, that required very little from them in the way of time or advertising, that was overseen by a dedicated, loyal and friendly team of developers. They had all of that, and because of costs incurred by another game created by another studio, decided that the logical thing to do was not take action against the offending developer, but closing a completely unrelated title. Shutting down a still-profitable game is not a good business decision on the best of days, still less when you realize that by shutting down CoH, they actually removed one of their revenue streams. By what logic does someone decide that losing money is best offset by then purposely making even less money? The company no longer knows what it is doing, and this is obvious when you look back and see that the entire experience, from the announcement to this date, has been one enormous sequence of missteps, half-truths, idiotic decisions and blatant lies.
I'm still playing. I'm going to play until they literally yank the cords out of the servers at midnight November 30. I don't know what I'll do after that.
One thing I do know, however: no way will it have anything to do with an NCSoft title.

We should make sure we do our part in ensuring the success and growth of the game, or what ever game we join, COH2 or WoW or whatever remake of pong. If we have extra money to put into it and wont miss it, buy something. If we can go f2p versus subscription and the game is liked, buy subscription. If the game is well, tell everyone we come across about it even if there isnt a single piece of advertisement fro mthe company. ANd if there isnt advertisement try to get an reason why just as much as we want the reaso nwhy for this closure. If populations are dropping and someone suggest server merger, dont down it like in the past on the forum over a minor detail such asa character names. look into it and see if it can work. SPeaking of server merger, that may be one of the reason why NCSoft did not explore that option it seems. There was a very loud outcry when it even was suggested and it seemed that the engine made it hard to do anyways. Make a game based engine/coding where it's easy to downsize if needed. What ever method is taken, we cant control what teh company ultimately does but we sure as hell could have should have done more to ensure the game grows and succeed. But hey, some people liked the small community but buisness wise that usually dont bode well in the long run when there are more players leaving (old vets) than new players staying.
In short, if there is a next time, cherish the moments like never before and realize if it dont work and make significant money, there is a chance some CEO is eyeballng the plug. And even if they pul the plug anyways, then walk away knowing there was nothing more that could have been done. Oh and of course look into the company that is running things. If they have a penchant for pulling plugs, expect and play like the plug can be pulled any moment. If they are shady, expect shady practices, if they are MMO killers, expect them to kill MMOs. If none of that matters then play like none of that matters even in the face of the end.

There is no hint, no suggestion, no leak of any kind that says "City of Heroes 2"
The only actions that we have to go on are the sudden and brutal axing of Paragon Studios and the less than melancholy "response" to our outcries.
That doesn't say City of Heroes 2, that doesn't say publicity stunt, that says WAR.
...and when the servers do go offline mark my words it will be.
Ignoring anyone is a mistake. You might miss something viral to your cause.

Not saying it's not well-made, but it's...WoW with starships and light sabers. Enjoy it if you can, but...meh.
Things to remember:

-Overkill is the only kill;
-If someone asks if you're a god, run away.
I wouldn't touch a CoX 2 if it had any involvement with NCSoft. Yeah, I'm THAT racked off with NC.
Give you five years subs on two accounts, a shed load of money for costume packs etc and then have it pulled out from under me? Not a fracking chance.
Wish I'd known about their habit of closing MMO's down before I joined CoX because I would have put my money into a better company.
Looking forward to those newspaper articals on the situation next week.
And NC shares nose diving even further.

Please feel free to go to NCSofts Facebook page and vent there, since I doubt NCSoft ever looks at these forums.
I understand they actually had to close down their English Facebook page for awhile due to the CoH fans complaining.
There really doesn't seem to be much point in maintaining "goodwill" with the old NCSoft now. I hope it gets worse for them after the shut off day, I know I'll be yelling a bit louder in my tiny corner of the internet.

We tried goodwill. They told us where to stuff it.
They can't really complain if people take their advice.

Seems something is seriously happening on the market. Maybe ppl. are getting knowledge about a certain company closing MMOs that make money and replacing family stuff with adult stuff for a smaller market. Loosing your whales to other companies by not even offering any other MMO as replacement (even B&S isn't ready when COH goes down, would be an alienazing anway but at least one should try to keep the loyal paying customers?) is showing much knowledge and compentence in doing business. As shareholders are not stupid, you can see in the chart above at reuters, where NCSoft is leading. You can also click onto 1 year chart, makes it more impressive.
Edit: Something is going seriously wrong at NCSoft. I would at least have tried to keep my VIP players. Before shutting down COH, finishing Wildstar as a family game to give an opportunity to change. No, NCSoft just shuts down COH and offers nothing for their loyal paying customers - they send them off to other MMO companies! Who made that nonsense business decision? NCSoft should had made a free code for every VIP player to join guildwars 2 for free - at least to try (!) to keep some of their loyal paying customer whales. But still we're kept in darkness, no answers, we just should shut up and leave. Well then, your paying (!) customers are leaving, as you wished.
You are correct though that WoW is not like to increase their playerbase by 20% any time soon.
I wouldn't wager any large sums of money I can't afford to lose that WoW might not get jerked... Prolly not next week, but within 2 years, it could happen..
