Quote:That would be possible, but it would be a new game and you would have to buy it ,even you owned the original game, it would be a single player game , the multiplayer would be Doom and Quake style (manly PvP amomg little groups 8-10 characters at most) very few updates (if any) and once you had reached end game it would have a very little replay value. What about tweaking and repackaging the game a bit as a stand alone game that can be run on PCs and game consoles such as the PS3 or X-box? Multiplayer co-op options could be worked in, if not through servers, then at least IP to IP network connectivity. It's an idea at least, and a way for NcSoft to capitalize on what they consider a waning market by creating a new product out of the old, as well as give die hard fans a copy of COH to play for as long as they like...?
In a word look at

ame and you will have an idea of what the game would be -
Quote:Balance is the name of the game, in CoH villains and heroes had different classes and some of the villains ones... do you remember stalkers...the ultimate hero killers, not to mention the masterminds? The problem with that is that of all the MMOs, CoH must be pretty near the top of the list when it comes to required PvP - heroes vs villains is like the classic match-up
PvP has not a great future when one of the sides has clearly the advantage and in fact CoH PvP has died out some years ago even if recently they tried to give the same classes to both the sides -
They aren't doing so hot for the same reasons that CoH is closing down. The MMOG are no longer at the top of the chain food.

Trion has already enough problems with its own Rift to risk with someone else game:

to go free to play is never a good sign -

Point is Krypton was destroyed and that planet is whole. If they wanted a real "Krypton" they should have found one whose core is a compressed star :those planets have a tremendous force of gravity ( a native of one of those planet could jump at the top of a skyscraper easily on earth) but are very unstable, they are supposed to explode soon or later...oooopppss

for those of you interested you can see here like ncsoft fares in the stock market.
http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/036570:KS
If you scroll down to Income Statement for 036570 you will see like the income of the company was going down since 2010
This could explain because CoH was closed and Guild Wars2 went live early -
Quote:Fact is: with 80 million you can do your own AAA game no need to buy someone else game. Rumor is that the budget of developing DCUO was 50 million and it is considered a very large oneYeah, 80 million would be way more than City was worth in of itself.
I did wonder in the past though if some of the tech behind the game in of itself may have had more value than the IP-- super sidekicking, power customization, AE, etc. Even those things, unique as they may be, I don't see making the City franchise worth 80 million. -
Quote:But when CoH went free to play didn't you see a red allarm light suddenly going on escpecially after they had previously united the USA and EU servers? In hindsight you could say that the end of CoH was foretold simply everyone did choose to ignore the clues. If I knew COH was closing in 2012 and it was even a year before shut down I would have felt better about it. I would have known way ahead of time, not within 90 days. Even then after all development was completed and NCSoft would say it was time to move, I would have accepted that.
I can't trust NCsofts product anymore. They have built the reputation of pulling the plug without proper notice. 90 days isn't proper notice. -
Quote:Point is CoH 2 never was even discussed in the seven years of life of CoH and that tell much about the real state of the game. That is a game that could survive but not spawn a sequel. None was willfull to risk with a CoH2 not NCsoft, not Cryptic that did sold its quota of CoH to develop is own game. I think very unlikely that someone would risk it nowI did not mean actually players, at least not any that is familiar with the game. I meant publishers. Despite doing well CoH never reached huge numbers and it ended up canceling. Heck, I think you may be able to walk to some publishers with a finished CoH2 and they may say "ok but that name got to change."
But I do still think players that were never familiar with the game, players that only heard about it during it's cancelation coverage, are unlikely to remember anything other than, well... "it was that canceled MMO."
Maybe. I got to admit I never felt a huge love for the lore in the game. I loved playing every new story arc at least once. I loved to find out this or that tie-up, no mater how cliche or lame it may have been (for the exception of the origin of power, I still hate that one arc and grinned my teeth all the way trough.) But the heroes in the universe? Positron? Statesman? Never really saw them as much but filler, or near placeholders. Volatile replacements for Superman or Ironman (not literally.)
My point is: I don't think the IP is as strong. I don't think the comic books did too well either, so that may be a point proving this.
I'm not saying it has to be a strong IP to be a successful and loved game, heck I loved the hell out of it, but independent of the game I don't feel the IP packed much punch.
I don't hold my breath for many reasons. The only way a game called "City of Heroes 2" will happen is if NCSoft develops it themselves. It CAN happen. The SaveCOH may have given them the idea there is potential in there for a new game, and a game done by them, their way, may be marketable in Asia. But it would hold zero resemblance to what we play today, not without the same lead team. -
Quote:CO was designed to be the online version of the pen and paper RPG "Champions".Yeah, CO is and was designed to be a comic book game and nothing else
while CoH was merely a "super hero" game that could be whatever you wanted it to be. I've seen people play it as a comic book, a detective drama, or the Avengers Movie.

The idea, in the paper game was to let you recreate any character that you have seen in the comic books, movies or any other media and they succeded fairy well. The computer game try to do the same but it is more limited in that way -
Quote:Basicaly you are saying:"for me the things that have ACTUAL MONETARY VALUE are those related to my entertainment (BTW entertainment is a part of life too and not a lesser one nor it is an optional for those that want to remain sane) and evil NCsoft is taking them away from me. Well I will tell you this : in my life I had worse loss than a videogame and these I will never recover. So I will enjoy the next videogame (even it would be only for a week) and the next one after that. In fact I am curious about Sword and Soul. Maybe at the end I will not play it but it will be because I will not like the game enough not because "it is by an evil publisher"Non sequiter. Participating in real life is not optional, unless one suicides.
My entertainment: optional.
And since life itself involves tolerating intense, high-stress risk, I am LESS LIKELY to be wanting to endure that in my entertainment, too.
NCsoft is taking things from me, that I consider to have ACTUAL MONETARY VALUE. I spent thousands of hours of time, and hundreds of real-world dollars, on my alts. NCSoft is taking all that away from me - and from us - without so much as a sincere by-your-leave. "yeah, we love you guys, and you mean a lot to us!" *YANKS RUG OUT FROM UNDER US*
You bet your bottom dollar I will think once, twice and then thrice before I give them or any MMO publisher the opportunity to do it again. -
Will we have a really dreadfull Darth Vader this time? I remember that the witch in Snowwhite(Disney) scared me to death when I was a child. Darth Vader (Lucas) on the other hand...let us say that i saw him like a radio that needed some fine tuning

Quote:everything can be yanked out from under you tomorrow :your work, your family even your own life. Are you reluctant to invest time and cash in them too? This is true, but being about to endure one horrid stroke of that sword makes me far, far less inclined to want to endure another one in the [potential] near future.
Having watched the Broadcast chat in CO, it seems even by player admission it is obvious that this game is almost completely stagnant, which makes me wonder A LOT about its long-term viability.
I am sure we will never know, but it would be interesting to know how much of a chilling effect CoX's closure will have on its players who move on to other venues, especially those who were only playing the one game [CoX]. It has made me really, really reluctant to invest time and especially, CASH in something that can get yanked out from under me tomorrow - which I would think would be a bad idea indeed for MMOs running real-world cash shops. How many are feeling a similar reluctance?
We will never know. -
Quote:The same logic that had Marvel sue Jack Kirby and Stan Lee everytime that they did writhe/drawn a new issue of the FFIf you recall, Marvel sued Cryptic over City of Heroes and the ability to create custom characters that looked like Marvel Characters. Now, they are making a Marvel game and you can't help but play a Marvel character. Some logic they have there...
. Marvel can do what it wants with its characters. Everyone else doesn't. And that means that they can autorize you to play with their characters, Cryptic cannot

Quote:Point is when Lineage 2 went free to play there was a flood of players. When CoH went free to play the flood was on the DCUO servers that went free to play about the same time. This is something the weight much on the scale when you have to decide if you have to close down a gameMain issue with re-investing in the two games they want to focus on (Aion and Lineage 2) is their peak is done here. Both of these games thrive on PvP content and monthly subs. Out comes GW2 which has PvP done really well and no monthly fee. Yes, Lineage 2 and Aion could go to Hybrid or F2P, but the PvP engines supporting both those games is horrid compared to GW2 which has players singing its praises.
Here's the problem, people know about GW2 because it's the current cream of the crop. No matter what they do with the other two games they will always be behind GW2 and you can bet Arenanet will ensure that.
The problem with Lineage 2 is it is now dated and a pure PvP based game. That is the only demographic that will find that game appealing. PvP is a niche market and only appeals to a certain group of players. Thus, because the game is dated and becase it only works for a certain portion of the player base it will never measure up. Why play Lineage 2 when you could play with all your MMO friends in a game that is targeted to every gaming demographic.
The problem with Aion is the grindfest and the forced grouping experience. Players in the States detest grinding and its an even smaller niche market than PvP. Again, why play this when you and all your friends can play a game that caters to all of you.
And let's go to Blade & Soul. The game is not being supported where it was released first. There are a couple of articles wondering why NcSoft wants to bring out an unfinished project here. Again, it's PvP and again its a grindfest. Not to mention the fact that the game is offending (and believe it or not this is harder to do than most think) male and female gamers with its "less armor is better" approach to the characters. Again, why trust a game that is having people complain in its launch territories and, again, focuses on a niche player demographic?
Note: The name of the game is also being critisized atm. "Blade and Soul" is far to similar to the original name of the Soul Caliber series "Soul Blade." NcSoft is touting a fighting game MMO with the hopes people will give it a shot based on brand familiarity. The setting is similar as well.
NcSoft shot themselves in the foot when GW2 launched. They have all these lofty goals for games that don't measure up. In order to "refocus" they would have to, literally, order Arenanet to sabotage their own creation and that would give that development team ammunition for a "corporate sabotage" suite. I have no doubt NcSoft had hoped GW2 might have been a lackluster performer, but right now it's going strong and why shouldn't it?
You can log in and your friends can help you while still gaining for their own characters. PvP is dynamic and amazing. Casual play isn't ignored and you are rewarded for exploration, trade skills, etc. fairly well. And it doesn't take long to reach the maximum level, even through caual play.
Right now NcSoft's worst enemy is themselves. Shuffling money to concepts that are already failing or doomed to fail is proof they just don't understand this market. -
Quote:Escuse me? A month from now everyone will get a permaban whatever they can say or do.If you are one that has been vocal about the game closure via social networking, be careful with your personal information and mindful in how you express your displeasure.
According to a poster from the SaveCoH facebook group, they were banned from the game for what NCSoft deemed "negative" commentary on the English facebook page.
Again, take this as rumor. The suspension may be unrelated to the comment, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
The only reason that they could have to ban someone would be that they have decided about not closing the game then the ban would have some sense -
Quote:That is the point : the weapon switch is the reason because you cannot costumize the key of weapons attack , not that you have to costumize much because there 5 in all : 3 for the weapon in the main hand(keys 1-3) and 2 in the off hand(keys 4-5). And what would happen if you had changed the weapon key putting for example the attack on key 2 (main hand) on key 5 (off hand ) and you change the weapon on your main hand?Right, it is to avoid such problems that you cannot change the weapon keys because like you know you can change the skill keys 7-0 like you likeI'd have to rebind every time I switched weapons, and every time I played a different character. Sorry, that's not a workaround.
Until they improve their interface and gameplay, I consider GW2 an okay game designed for hard-core gamers with stupendous twitch reflexes. I'm getting old, I literally cannot play games like that anymore. -
Quote:Welcome in the real world. Unlike what they would like you to believe and the much advertised "truth" "that is the best that will win" in the business world it is usually the worse product the one that will win (it is not a coincidence the CO has less players than DCUO to remain in the superhero genre)I find it absolutely fascinating that this game is going down while other lesser games of the same genre continue to function. How on earth does Champions Online continue while City of Heroes vanishes? What a horrible joke this is on all of us who have been loyal to the game through the years. Frustrating to say the least. And please do not patronize us by telling us you've exhausted all efforts to sell the game to another company. You're telling us this within a month of the sunset announcement! Get back to work and get it done. No excuses, just results.

Quote:Very unlikely since Guild Wars (the first) is around and kicking. And that is an answer to those that think that they "did take the money from CoH to develop Guild Wars 2": If they had that intention they would have taken the money from Guild Wars 1 and closed it since it is a direct competitor with Guild Wars 2. Instead they did keep their promise to the players "We will not close down Guild Wars until there will be a player playing it"For what it's worth, I don't have any particular animosity against ArenaNet or against Guild Wars 2. They seem like nice enough people, and they undoubtedly work very hard on the game to make it as fun as possible for its community.
The problem, however, is that ArenaNet is beholden to NCsoft just as Paragon Studios was. There's absolutely nothing stopping NCsoft from pulling the rug out from under them just like they did Paragon Studios. -
I have played DCUO for some time and no matter what feature they could add or not add DCUO is a shooter-beat them up, that happens to be played massively online, nothing more nothing less. If you like to beat everything that moves, and something that don't, not caring around storyline and plausability don't walk, run to download it. If you want even a shadow of roleplaying in your game avoid it like the plague

Quote:There were others : the union of the european and USA servers (since one of my two accounts was an european one i can tell you that it was because there weren't many players left on the EU servers and that two years ago) and above all their going free to play. Of course the Paragon Studios employees continued their work like nothing was happening: on one hand they were hoping that somehow they could avoid the catastrophe if more players would join and on the other they were paid for itMissed portents?
1) About a year ago, the Test Server was wiped. Not in itself evil; we always knew that the devs reserved the right to wipe or even shut down the test server at any time. But after six years of unofficial support for the tester community, all characters were wiped. No warning nor explanation was given. Everyone, including many advanced native characters were just gone one day. Note that the test server had been overwritten before; the devs would announce that a backup would be made, a copy of Freedom (?) would replace it, and when the testing was over, the actual test characters would be restored. Not this time.
2) About six months ago, official foreign language was dropped, both in the forums and on the Zukunft and Vigilance servers as well. Since I speak neither German nor French, I felt slightly bad for those players, but I didn't think it was something that would affect me.
3) Two days before the closure announcement, Zwill held his final coffee talk ( http://www.twitch.tv/paragonstudios/b/330380418 ) as a Paragon Studios employee. It started late, was very disorganized, and covered nothing very interesting. While they joked about upcoming "secret projects", I wonder now if they sensed the reaper.
That all said, I still hope that somehow City of Heroes continues. Still, maybe I wasn't listening as well as I should have been. -
