Well it's in the works. And it's diablo style? This is where i'm heading after CoX shuts down.

Wrong thread, wrong game. Im sure it will be fun if you like Marvel Ultimate Alliance Online, but I still need the true successor to this one.

Well since all access doesn't have a comic etc. section, this is as good a place as any. I'd be thrilled if it played like ultimate alliance (well the first one anyway).
Anyone heard anything from the beta signups yet?

I don't think it's the wrong thread. Too many people keep posting in the forums that aren't All Access, restricting who can and can't talk. It's annoying and redic.

And I'm looking forward to it. Looks like a solid game. And of course it ain't CoH, but that's like comparing apples to oranges.

I am not an MMO person...only ever REALLY played CoH, BUT am considering trying Marvel when it comes out. Can you please explain to me though what Diablo style means (Yes I know Diablo is a game hehehe).

An isometric/topdown/zoomed-out viewpoint action-clickfest with a variety of occasionally useless skills wherein the action tends to be punctuated by enemies exploding into showers of often useless items.

I burnt the toast: Download the Torchlight 2 Demo it's free and it doesn't take long to download at all. It's plays a lot like Diablo II.

Can you guys give me any advice on how to get into Marvel Heroes Beta?

Also Zxero is right. A lot of players are denied access to half the forum...it sucks and there's NOTHING they can do about it.

Based on the preview of the game I saw... yes, this exactly.

Also, I would play this game... if it didn't have no ability to create your own custom characters. You can only play as existing Marvel characters a la Ultimate Alliance.

It isn't just vaguely like Diablo, the project is being headed up by David Brevik, the same guy who created Diablo 1 and 2. Early reviews are calling the game a throwback to Diablo 2.

I certainly wouldn't mind playing it, but it's not going to be a replacement for CoH.

Possibly it will mean that it will use the same Diablo interface
http://www.diablowiki.net/Interface
and style of play, that was by the way alike to the Marvel Alliance interface

If anything, someone will come along with a perfect CoX successor, it's just a matter of when and if.

The signup has been on the website since oct 1. I've yet to hear anything from them.

: / Same here. Guh, well that sucks. I was a huge fan of Xmen Legends 1.

If I don't think of it as an MMO(RPG), I suppose it could actually be an entertaining Marvel-ized Gauntlet (Dark Legacy) distraction now and then.

Just seems like a multiplayer game and not really an MMO(RPG... seriously, what happened to those last three letters in this industry?).

Playing pre-existing characters has long been a staple of RPGs (both the video game kind and the tabletop).

The name Orangutan comes from the Indonesian and Malay words orang (person) and hutan (forest) meaning "person of the forest".

EDIT: Haha, I suppose I can see how you thought my "(RPG)" reference was directly attributed to the nature of the Marvel game, but it wasn't. I always go to say, "mmorpg" instead of the "MMO" that has become the norm and it had nothing to do with this particular game that I brought that up.

Still, call this particular game what you will, but it doesn't measure up to my expectations of an mmorpg, at least.

EDIT EDIT: Also, for the record, playing pre-existing characters was never once a staple of any of the table top RPGing that I've ever done.
Also, any RPG I played prior to the ones that let me truly create my own character, either annoyed/bored me or I made my own character in my head anyway.
Most of them, that I ever played, at least allowed me to name them myself.

Regardless... things evolve. Regrettably, usually into a state of devolution!

Ah, it was a comment on how the abbreviation of the acronym is becoming more and more common, then?

Personally, I prefer MMOG. But that's just because in my experience roleplaying in any of these games is pretty rare even if some of the character progression trappings are there and there's a social interface that would facilitate the basic interactivity. Even when there are official roleplay servers. I ran into a surprising (to me) amount of roleplaying here early on, but I've hardly seen it here for quite awhile.

the last three letters (RPG)were rarely played from the producers and gamers themselves in the MMO industry. They were just a "you cannot give your character that name" but nobody cared about what your character was supposed to be so you had priests and other holy men that got assassination quests, warriors on healing quest and so on.

If you recall, Marvel sued Cryptic over City of Heroes and the ability to create custom characters that looked like Marvel Characters. Now, they are making a Marvel game and you can't help but play a Marvel character. Some logic they have there...

p.s. DC was cool about Cryptic, saying that it could only help broaden the appeal of superhero comics by having a game that let you make your own. And THEIR game does let you make your own instead of forcing you to use a pre-defined character.

Maybe at your tabletop, but at the tabletops I've been at, we've always created our own characters.

Yeah some logic. They made it impossible for players to violate other peoples copyright/trademarks by restricting players to specific Marvel owned intellectual property and thus eliminating all potential lawsuits from DC Comics, NCSoft, Cryptic, etc, etc, etc.

Cuz ya know nobody would want to see Marvel get in trouble for allowing players to do the same thing they sued us for.

Same here and I've played at tables since 1985 from California to Israel. (I was in the Navy and we were running a few sessions when we were in port in Haifa.)

I've actually never used pre-made characters in my home campaigns, but they have nevertheless been a part of tabletop gaming. Many D&D published adventures came with pre-made characters to use (and many official RPGA events have required using pre-made characters). The original Marvel Superheroes RPG was setup to use published characters with no official custom creation option - there was a random character generator but I'm not certain if that was included in the original release. The later Marvel RPG from TSR that used cards and Mayfair's DC Heroes could be played either way. Some Call of Cthulhu adventures came with pre-made investigators (which could be convenient given the high mortality rate).

I prefer to make my own characters (and often setting, for that matter), but it would be ignorant to deny that pre-generated player characters have been a part of tabletop gaming for quite awhile now.

No way - I have the book (and the original box) sitting right here next to me. It includes a random character generator. I just happen to have been cleaning up the basement recently and it is still sitting on my desk in the office.
