The original Marvel Superheroes RPG was setup to use published characters with no official custom creation option - there was a random character generator but I'm not certain if that was included in the original release. The later Marvel RPG from TSR that used cards and Mayfair's DC Heroes could be played either way. Some Call of Cthulhu adventures came with pre-made investigators (which could be convenient given the high mortality rate).

I prefer to make my own characters (and often setting, for that matter), but it would be ignorant to deny that pre-generated player characters have been a part of tabletop gaming for quite awhile now.
Pre-made characters were always optional though, and considering the number of times I've seen them in use (meaning... never), I'd hardly call them on the level of "staple" which implies a basic use. In fact, creating a character from scratch seems far more basic in the medium than pre-made characters.

So, can you point out to me how "optional" it is to play Marvel's characters in Marvel Heroes Online?

Putting aside RPGA events where it wasn't optional... Many things are optional in tabletop games that are not optional in video games. Most video games don't allow me the option of creating my own setting or house rules, either - that doesn't mean they aren't RPGs.

No, but they sometimes feature rules that can be turned on or off, based on your preference. Too bad a friend of mine isn't here, he'd go into a giant rant about how video games could never be true RPGs.

As for the RPGA, seeing as I never went to an event, I could give diddly damn squat about them.

p.s. DC was cool about Cryptic, saying that it could only help broaden the appeal of superhero comics by having a game that let you make your own. And THEIR game does let you make your own instead of forcing you to use a pre-defined character.

I'm trying to understand exactly what it is that you're trying to say.

Yes, Marvel sued NCsoft/Cryptic over copyright/trademark infringement. It was also discovered that it was Marvel employees that had done so. The case was settle out of court, but not because NCsoft would have lost. How do I reckon? That lawyer was at HeroCon '08, he got a standing ovation for "succeeding in fighting off Marvel." I'm sure an out of court settlement was more cost-effective.

Marvel Heroes is currently being made by Gazillion with permission from Marvel Entertainment. So it makes sense that playing Marvel characters would be okay. Cryptic was originally developing Marvel Universe which fell through and eventually became Champions Online.

SOE developed DCUO and I don't recall a big stink between them and Cryptic, not that I paid that much attention.

As far as Marvel Heroes goes, I really have no interest in playing a limited selection of characters, I could get that out of most any standalone or console game.

This is another one on the list of games to try. Not sure I'm entirely happy with the lack of options to create my own hero, but I'd rather try it first and make an informed decision rather than write it off on that info alone.

Maybe he thinks Marvel is going to sue itself for letting it's customers use Marvel characters in a Marvel MMO owned by Marvel.

The same logic that had Marvel sue Jack Kirby and Stan Lee everytime that they did writhe/drawn a new issue of the FF . Marvel can do what it wants with its characters. Everyone else doesn't. And that means that they can autorize you to play with their characters, Cryptic cannot

That sounds about right to me.

This thread made me wonder...

If there any danger of a new hero MMO coming along and getting sued when we migrate to it and start recreating our own characters from here? Could a company "data-mine" character names and concepts from our accounts here, find them there, and claim a violation?

Im wondering now if I should delete all of my characters the day CoH shuts down...

Anyone have any ideas on if that is even possible?

No, unless you were already violating trademarks with your characters here.

Just an FYI, deleting characters only removes your ability to access them. They will still exist in the CoH database or wherever it is they store character information and in the back up data storage.
