Would you purchase a stand-alone City of Heroes game?

I would have *preferred* this game to be offline and single player (or limited multiplayer), actually.

The only reason I didn't already mod NWN into a CoH type game is the lack of vertical movement. Dynamic flight and jumping are needed in all game engines, IMO, and NWN lacks it.

But other than that, I was making a world that resembled CoH, with origins, enemy groups, zones, and so on. Of course, due to off the shelf art restrictions, I had to keep it "medieval," but in theme it was very much filled with agents, patrons, heroism, and villainy.

It was fun using the NWN toolset for this purpose, because you could affect everything except vertical movement. You could create terrain and indoor maps, you could place transition points (doors, magic portals, etc.), you could create new enemies, new powers, new effects, change the reward scale, and even add in weather, music, draw up your own NPC AI, and add complex interactive dialogue / cutscene situations. IIRC, I had even re-coded the mechanism for rewards to issue a subset of potions as an analog to inspirations.

Anyway, I had a blast with it, but the big problem was that the engine was slow and the lack of athletic or vertical movement was - at least for me - a killer. It removed all the kinetic joy from the game, and that's one of the greatest things in CoH, as far as I'm concerned.

Simply put, I wish this game had an offline mode. Everything there and accessible, just run from my own computer and no internet connection.
I'd buy that, and play it regularly, zero question.

Yes. Very yes. Especially since the game could then have origin-specific or AT-specific arcs, something I've always wished for in CoH.

Yes!!!

If I can still fly through my beautiful city, with or without wings, I would buy it. And I would know that the oddly empty streets are only that way because the other heroes(villians) are busy fighting crime(plotting mischief).

Solo play would be good, limited multi-player would be perfect, the largest team I ever enjoyed playing on was a group of 5.

Yes, but only* if it were moddable. Without other people to play with, I would need to be able to have other ways to keep the game fresh for myself.

*unless this product were offered by a reformed Paragon Studios to increase revenue to continue supporting the MMORPG. Then I'd buy it just to support the company.

@Draeth Darkstar
Virtue [Heroes, Roleplay], Freedom [Villains], Exalted [All Sides, Roleplay]
Code:
I24 Proc Chance = (Enhanced Recharge + Activation Time) * (Current PPM * 1.25) / 60*(1 + .75*(.15*Radius - 0.011*Radius*(360-Arc)/30))
Single Target Radius = 0. AoE Non-Cone Arc = 360.

IMO, I could see a core game being sold successfully if it had the Character Creator, Architect Entertainment and Base Builder with Import/Export support (share concept, design and assets (including actual playable characters) with other players... moreso, if those file types were compatible with third party graphics and animation editors.

LAN and small scale server capability would be a nice add in.

With the loss/reduction of being massively multi-player; the game world would need to be more interactive with the player. There would need to be more purpose for the NPC and NPC groups than just street filler.

The publisher could release major expansion packs on a periodic basis while offering micro-transactions as an in-between.

If they revamp the PvP system to take into account more 1v1 and small group play, streamline the grind out of it AND separate it from the PvE game... it could actually be a pro instead of a con.

The Market System should probably be gutted in favor of a better loot system, drop rate, crafting system (assuming a more isolated play design).

Support for third party and player community created assets, like costume pieces and maps should be a strong consideration (as a companion for the in-game 'modding' tools).

Keep a strong community board up and running.

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

Of course I'd buy it.

For me personally, the answer would be a resounding yes. Especially if it had modding tools built-in (which seems to be more and more the norm rather than the exception). Downloadable content? Yeah, I'd probably be into that too.
Absolutely. I'd prefer a Minecraft-style home-server/LAN type game so I could play it with my husband, but absolutely yes.

If I could import my NCSoft chars, absolutely. If not... probably; though having something in place of the market to provide ready access to the IOs I'd want would be a must.

If it were a standalone game, you can bet there'd soon be mods to allow direct fiddling with slotting and such.

A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!

Yes, without hesitations.

There are usually two sides to every argument but no end.

Everything placed above this line is always IMHO, YMMV and quite certainly not to be taken too seriously....

I'd buy it regardless.

But as far as how much I'd play it long-term would probably depend on if it allowed some kind of LAN or major mod support. After 8.5 years I've pretty much experienced all of the content you can get from it via solo play. The only thing that would keep me playing would be modding or being able to have -some- kind of multi-player mode.

I WOULD LOVE more games set on CoH IP

A Freedom Force kinda game would really suit CoH (Even after all these years I still play Freedom Force and the endless mods it has)

Or maybe an Arkham City style of game?

The possibilities are endless. and yes If they make it with an awesome quality (Like Freedom Force or the Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games) I will buy any single player spinoff.

For sure. Although I think it'd be cooler if they made a CoH 2, and tied in CoH 1 characters / achievements like they're doing for Guild Wars...

It would be tough, I enjoy teaming.

Yes - especially if we're able to port our current characters through an extractor. I've actually solo'd most of my 50s and I'm not ready to let go.

I've designed quite a few of my own characters for Freedom Force. All it takes is a graphics editor like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or even free ones like Gimp or Paint.net.

Freedom Force has an excellent modding community. There are literally hundreds of custom meshes, skins, maps, and FX available. There are a plethora of skinning tutorials. I'd never done anything like that before I started playing FF some years ago. My main character in CoH is based off the avatar I made for Freedom Force.

If you have no talent for skinning (or desire to learn), there are a number of skinners in the FF community who are willing to make characters for you per your descriptions. I've made a few for others myself (though I am not one of the true artists of the skinners).

It's true that there is no in-game method of mix 'n' match to make your own character, but it is possible to make just about any character design you can imagine with some graphics tools and practice. FF is highly moddable.

That said, to the OP: Yes, I would buy a standalone version of CoH.

Heck yes.

And if it includes a way to easily share Mission Architect missions with friends and community, then Double Heck Yes.

I would. It's the characters I've made that are the worst thing to lose, and if there were a standalone game that would be something I could still say they are for.

In a heartbeat, yes.

If it was like others were suggesting earlier, making it like Neverwinter Nights, with a core game, the ability to play your characters on other people's MP games, and the ability to host MP groups, that would be worth full price, as far as I'm concerned. And considering I've been a subscriber since this game came out the door, that's saying something.
