Would you purchase a stand-alone City of Heroes game?
If CoH was worked into a Freedom Force/Skyrim/KOTOR like game it would be vastly different, but I would still play it because I do like those games. Thing is I doubt you could turn this game into a complete singleplayer game like the ones you listed.
I think this thread is important, so I am posting again in it.
A boxed, single Player/Lan version of City Of Heroes is better than no City Of Heroes.

This is not a "Plan Z" or any other plan to save the game. It's just something I'm curious about.
If City of Heroes was re-worked into a Freedom Force or Skyrim or KOTOR-style of single-player game (possibly with a multi-player option, but again like a standard RPG, not a MMORPG) would you buy it? For me personally, the answer would be a resounding yes. Especially if it had modding tools built-in (which seems to be more and more the norm rather than the exception). Downloadable content? Yeah, I'd probably be into that too. |
I've always been primarily a solo player (with an occasional RL friend or two
dropping by to play co-operatively now and then, on my home network), and the
MMO business model never appealed to me all that much.
So, yep - I'd definitely be on-board with a standalone CoH game.
Of course, the simple fact IS that it's an MMO, so the question is a bit of a moot
point - a standalone was never in the cards.
Given that, it's my hope that NCsoft can be persuaded to part with the franchise
in such a way that it can still be played and enjoyed rather than ending up in
the bit bucket...

If it was the current game, exactly as is, except offline, yes. Ideally with mod tools, dev commands and such.
If there were any important gameplay changes, no. I'm not attached to the CoH universe, or even super-heroes at all, so if the core of this hypothetical SP game ended up significantly different than the current soloing experience, I'd look elsewhere.
I would buy it.
Whatever they charged.
Whether it would be single-player exclusive or with an option for multiplayer.
Yes. I would prefer to be able to play with the friends I have over the years, but if push came to shove.... just being able to mow down huge spawns with Itsy makes the game worth playing.

Actually, that would have been my preference in 2004.

I would, although I would miss the MMO aspect.
I'd play it as a standalone server, single player, iphone or collectible card game. I'd even play a turn based facebook game if it had the lore and powersets.

So a stand-alone City of Heroes is exactly the game I wanted to buy back in 2004, and I'd still be willing to buy it today (even if I might actually miss some of the multiplayer aspects of the game)
I was interested in Batman: Arkham Asylum and the sequel, but there have been far too many reports of poor performance on PCs since it's a console port. I'd love to play a decent superhero game like CoH as a single-player. I've been interested in sandbox games, but every time I try one, I abandon it relatively quickly because it's either 1) yet another medieval fantasy game or 2) a post-apocalypse wasteland rendered in brown and brown with a side helping of brown. Now I don't even see ads for any of these games any more, because I know none of them are going to float my boat.

I'd buy a stand alone CoH game in a heartbeat. I'd miss the teaming, but a single player game and a forum for those that play it would scratch enough of my itch for my soul to survive this horror.

Myself? probobly not actually. the game is fun, but its the community that made it. without that it would just be another gridiny RPG

Yes
Just because a standalone was never in the cards does not mean it cannot become one....
Lisa. |
Assuming for a moment that the current game IP was available, just getting
that to run as-is, right now, would be a Large Task - completely ignoring
IP legalities.
If NC flat out gave the code to us it would still be a Big Job.
Changing that code to run as a standalone (ie. no need for instance servers, map
servers, most client/server communication, login authentication, server shards) is,
quite simply put - astronomically hard.
It would probably be easier to write a standalone game from scratch than it would
be to convert the existing code-base to a standalone game. The design approaches
are radically different, if not mutually exclusive in several areas.
But this is the interwebs, so don't let practical realities inform your judgement

How big is this game anyway: in terms of gigs - if applicable.

It might be not practical, but as I said several posts above, whichever side of a problem, or election, or footballgame, etc I am on usually is the losing side.
I would love City to keep on in it's original state, but because of my "curse" I am cheerleading this idea instead....

I would DEFINITELY get a stand-alone CoH game. I solo a lot anyway, so while I'd miss the occasional team antics, I'd still play if it was only me.
