If we all stick together on this and help titan as much as we can it will be ok.even if that means building from scratch again.

The major problem we've got here is time - not only for gatering the data for an emu server, but also for the alternative of trying a Kickstarter CoH2 - it's unlikely that any of the devs ae able to wait around in the slim hope of something getting off the ground - they have themselves and their families to support, and need to find new jobs as soon as possible - so even if we did manage to get something going, by that time, the Paragon Studios team would have been dispersed across other studios.

Starting from scratch could be a long-term goal - but an emu server would be awesome for letting us play and stick together while we were getting the fresh start going.

EDIT: Copyright issues with the IP would also probably mean we'd have to create our own one for any fresh start - although I think that we should try and make it as close to the original IP as possible.

Time is on Tony's side. I assure you this for little longer than expected, he has more support than just of forum and game, little birdie say there other power at work who know NCsoft very well.

It not much time but a proposal is being waited on.

Fly, Tony. Bring dreams and hopes of peoples hearts of this game to Executives.

If we're successful, I will do my damnedest to include an unrestricted and indefinite indemnity clause allowing Matt Miller to use the Positron name, likeness, description, and related identifying characteristics. Even if he's not associated in the game in any way afterwards, he's earned that.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

Wow...that's just a totally dick move.

They can take MY characters when they pry them from my cold, dead hands. Scumsucking vermin...

Well, they're safe, because they're not part of the official IP - Positron is written into the IP, and features in the official comics and other promotional material.
As another example, when Jack left, he wouldn't have been allowed to use the name Statesman anymore - and the same goes for BAB.

Same.

I plan on deleting them all on the last day so if I want to use them elsewhere there is no way in HELL anyone can pull the data up and say "We own this"

If it carries on afterward, I can always recreate them.

You've got at least $30 a month from me and Kres.

I may be wrong here, but even if you delete the player characters, they have "copies" themselves... That's how they can reinstate accidental deletions.. or at least could in the past.

I really doubt they're going to copyright troll people based on City of Heroes characters, there is absolutely no point in it.

I dunno man, some of my characters are pretty badass. Wouldn't blame them for wanting them.

If they actually tried, however, they're going down.

Anything us unwashed masses can do to help, Tony, let us know. I don't know how successful you'll be, but but at this point you have all the moral support I and my SG can give you.

If worse comes to worse, maybe Titan can take what they know of the game and potentially make a new, smaller, version with a different engine to work with as its own new IP. Call it "Titan City" or something. I'd throw in for a Kickstarter of that. Use some of that kickstarter money to re-hire a couple of the programmers from City of to help recreate the feel of this game without directly copying it. Fates knows I bet they'd appreciate that.

"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.

I'm pretty sure they copyrighted everything LONG AGO before you thought there would be no point in it.

NCSoft owns everything including your toons.. I never read the ULA, but I am pretty sure it pretty much say it.

Lets just hope TonyV and someone on the inside can persuade someone. Assuming they are not planning some sort of COH 2.0 that would conflict with this.

I have a bad feeling that the people holding the IP may not release it, even if only because they want the playerbase to stop focusing on THIS game and invest time, effort and money into other NCSoft properties.

If we keep playing CoX, we *won't* be playing whatever new crap they have coming down the pike. And they dont like that.

This ignores the "you just took my characters, like HELL will you ever see a cent of my money again!" mindset, and I sincerely hope I am wrong about this. But I would not at all be surprised.

With that said I am down for helping this idea in any way I can, if it is possible.

Thanks for all of the supporting sites and applications team Titan!

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

Very true and would agree with this.

From what I understand, members of the team behind Torchlight worked on Diablo I and II. I personally prefer Torchlight to Diablo III by far and am still cautiously optimistic about Torchlight II.

So much has changed in ten years since CoH started its initial development. And despite NCSoft being a behemoth, Cryptic/Paragon was indeed a small to medium sized studio for much of its duration and in relation to CoH development. In my opinion, the most interesting stuff happening in gaming right now involves things being done by these smaller studios who are not beholden to large money hungry publishers. My hopes is that if a short term buyout does not happen is that several experienced members of the team and talent from Paragon dare to launch an indie studio that could push the multiplayer superhero experience even further.

Games/platforms like Minecraft have proven that persistent, multiplayer, and massive are not mutually bound concepts anymore. Similarly, gaming world physics and voxels have come a long long way in the past 10 years. The fall of CoH leaves a big hole IMO in the market. The other two options for persistent super hero play have not held my interest at all, despite being newer engines. At best, CO felt like CoH 1.5 with a graphic update and some cautious experiments. Hopefully this vacuum will be filled though by a bold experiment that pushes preconceptions and innovates as much as CoH has over its history.

So lets say for arguments sake somehow the IP could be secured. You dont have the rights to the engine.. so a new one would have to be developed correct ??

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

Unless they could secure the engine rights from Cryptic (unlikely), then yes.

In other words, CoH2 - which could actually be a good thing for the long-term future of the game world - the settings, stories and NPCs we all know and love, but using an engine that has much more scope than the current 10 year old one.
A new engine opens up the possibility of asymetrical costume parts, 3 or 4 colors per costume part instead of 2, animated hair, multiple cape rigs, dynamic lighting so that power effects cast their own light, no war walls, seats and benches you can sit on by clicking them, super speed over the surface of water and up vertical walls, holsters/scabbards that display your actual chosen weapon that disappears from the sheath when you draw it, better mob AI, destructable environments, picking up and throwing objects, RV-style phasing tech for whole zones and so on - a new engine could give us the game we have now, only even better.
