So lets say for arguments sake somehow the IP could be secured. You dont have the rights to the engine.. so a new one would have to be developed correct ??
|
1) We could work to acquire the engine from Cryptic. Probably unlikely, but hey, we can dream big, right?
2) We can work with Cryptic to license the engine just like NCsoft did.
3) We can use crowd funding to hire developers to develop a drop-in replacement for the engine--possibly some of the very same developers who have been working on the game for years already.
4) We can use crowd funding to hire developers to develop a new, better, shinier engine. More expensive and it would totally depend on the amount of crowd funding revenue available, but still a tantalizing possibility.
5) Probably more options I haven't even considered since it's been less than 24 hours since I've been mulling all of this--and a whole lot more--over. My Skype name (tonyv.paragonwiki) and e-mail address (tonyv@cohtitan.com), Facebook page (http://facebook.com/tony.vazquez.3192), and CoH forums (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php) are all public if you feel I'm leaving out some other brilliant option.
And I'm not being facetious when I say that; if we're successful, I want this game to be the Green Bay Packers of the MMORPG genre, community owned and supported so that we would never have to worry about the team being sold, moved, or shuttered again.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
I've been pondering these possibilities. If there is a dependency on third-party components such as the game engine, there are several possibilities to get around this, such as:

I may not be an art person, but I can offer webdev work for free. I would be happy to develop UIs, too. I can throw around a mockup in as little as a day, I would also be up for getting an established website up for this project.
@Rien
I am Lord Omi. Now and forever. They can take our City, but they can't take me.
The idea of a completely community owned, massively popular MMORPG is extremely tantalizing and epic.
To be able to use the Lore, however, we still need the IP from NCsoft. The Game Engine can be worked around through development of a new (better!) one. But for this game to be truly a second coming of CoH, we need the following things (in order of importance, first being most important):
Costume Creator
Same dev team
Lore
Gameplay
Really I do think Gameplay should be considered last; the true soul of CoH is the limitless designs and concepts you can bring to life in the Creator.

This is what it means to be a tank!
That's the biggest problem - as much as they may love the game, they still have themsleves and their familes to support, and they really can't just hang around for months in the hope that we might be able to put something together to continue the game - some of them will, quite naturally, already be looking for new jobs - unless NCSoft sells the game to another publisher, then the dev team will be long gone before we can get anything done.

Also, just the act of asking could make NC wonder if they're making a mistake, or it could even draw an offer from one of those larger companies that buys out older titles.

If we're looking for large companies to buyout the City, I'd put up a vote for Valve. They make some awesome games, have the money for it, and I believe they have some experience with MMORPGs.
Could be much more doable, though not quite so tantalizing, as a community driven model.
Hi Tony,
While I'm under no illusions at all about the likelihood of success for obtaining the IP,
I certainly like the plan and applaud the effort.
If, by some one-in-a-gazillion shot you can pull it off, I'd also happily contribute to
the cause.
wrt the game engine - another route is porting/developing a CoH version for the
Unreal Engine 3. Afaik, doing so is completely free until you get to the stage of
"commercial product". Definitely a crapton of work, mind you, but an option
nevertheless.
In any case, well played sir, GL and Best Wishes.

I agree that you should at least try.
There's also a remote chance that NCSoft might be forced to liquidate its assets at some point in the future. It might be a good idea to attempt to be ready to strike at that sort of opportunity if it ever arises.

That's also why developing a replacement game, reverse engineering the servers, etc are not the most viable option. They would take way too long.

Well...
I wish i could have said this before and/or not in a such difficult context.
First i would really like to thank you all for trying to find a "smoother" way out. So much enthousiasm here
Wish you good luck...
Already made a few CoH related tools, i even contacted Diellan some months ago about a possible remade of Mids' ...
I've got some skills in web developement and i think i can help -for free- on UIs too (as one said before).
So if you need some hands, i'll be there

@TonyV, You've got 8 people here from Liberty and Protector that are willing to put money towards this goal every month. We can each give $20 a month indefinitely for this. It's not much, but that's the thing about snowflakes... each snowflake isn't much. It's when they get together that they're an unstoppable force of nature, an avalanche.
I've often pondered why this game is so good, and so important to me.
Is it the players? ...yes somewhat, but most of the people I play with I know outside this game and know and care for them.
Is it the Devs? ...Yes! Very much so. I've never ever played any game where the Devs are as responsive and kind, committed and considerate, creative and compassionate as this one. They make my day, so many days.
But mostly, you know what it is? I'm an American patriot living in a post-modern world where heroism is gauche, passion for a cause is passe, and apathy is ubiquitous.
In Paragon City... there are heroes, and I get to be one. I don't have to play it cool when I see something I don't like. I can jump in and make a difference. All of my 54 characters when playing and moving through the city and see some Hellion or Outcast jackwagon stealing some poor woman's purse will stop and pulverize the slackwit and send him to the Zig's infirmary with a love note attached, even if I'm a high-tier incarnate.
Why? Because I'm a hero in Paragon City.
I have an 8 year old little girl. This summer I signed her up with a freebie account, edited her chat channels (for the sake of her mental virginity), and commenced to play with her with my wife. Because she wants to be a hero, too. (She burst into tears when I gave her the news.)
Inside every person, there is a seed of nobility. We all long to be better than we are, in a world where people act out of altruism, rather than selfishness; a world where self-sacrifice is noble, not gullible.
Paragon City was that world for me for 8 years. If it is within my power, it will stay that way. If it is not within my power, I pray to God that He change it to be so.
So yes. I will try to be a hero one more time. @TonyV, consider me in your Supergroup for this fight. I will rise to the occasion. Tell me what I can do, for I am a Hero on the inside, and I will not stand idly by.
Happy gaming!

Look... I'm not saying it even could happen, but I'm in the same place as everyone here, wishing hard. Even so, we have to be a little practical. The community can't repurchase PS and all assets outright. We're talking a substantial fraction of a billion dollars there -- even if we get 10k people up on this, they'd have to give 50-100 thousand each to make it work. I know I don't have anything close to that kind of money. Crowd-sourcing alone won't win the day.
Here's what would get us CoH+:
- Titan Network being incorporated. Are you guys? This is important because you're going to need to own something and it can't belong to any individual member of TN. I'm srs. The other option is for another incorporated body to step in here and TN to take on an organizational role.
- Buying the IP from NCSoft. This relies basically on them being charitable, because we definitely can't make them an offer so good they can't refuse. Our best bet here is to get what money together we can and also start a campaign on Youtube of individual pleas to sell. Somebody call Michelle (Dark Respite)!
- Starting another campaign to find a publisher willing to take on the project. This is the real money angle. We'd have to convince them that we can make this profitable over a year or so, but we'd need a lot of money upfront.
- (Possibility) : They buy or license the existing engine.
- Generating a new studio -- ideally comprised of as many PS/Cryptic vets as possible -- to either develop a new engine or continue development on the existing one. The financial arrangements at this point are a bit hazy; we might be "subscribing" with no actual product just to defray costs to the publisher, and there isn't a guarantee it'd work. But that's a bridge we negotiate the toll for when we get to it.
Thanks for trying to do something. I'll be following both here and at The Titan Network, and if you get to the point of kickstarting, I'll be there with whatever support I can afford.

I'd like to propose that whichever way it happens - CoH 1 being saved or CoH 2 being created by the players, the name of the first Issue should be "Resurrection."
