Discussion: Introducing Tweet Code Thursdays!

Thursdays just got a lot more awesome. Usually known for simply being the day before a Friday, Thursdays will now be known as Tweet Code Thursdays!

What does this mean?

Every Thursday*, starting at 10:00 AM PDT, we'll be posting cool stuff on our Twitter feed. Screenshots of upcoming content, photos from around the studio and of course, codes that may be redeemed for in-game stuff! We'll be tweeting all of this throughout the day, so keep your eyes peeled!

For item codes, we'll announce when the codes will be going out, and we'll give people a specific amount of time to re-tweet our post. If you re-tweet our post, we'll respond directly to you with a code to use. No scramble. No luck involved. No twitchy fingers required. Simply re-tweet our post in the timeframe given and we'll direct message you with a code.

In short, if you want an item code, do the following:

  • Follow us on Twitter
  • Re-tweet our tweet when prompted to do so
  • Receive a code

So, join us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/cityofheroes and score some cool stuff!

*Tweet Code Thursdays will not begin on July 12, 2012 until after PlayNC maintenance has been completed.

Updating with frequently asked questions:

Q: Are the codes single-use?
A: Yes, the codes we'll be giving out are single-use only

Q: Will items from the codes make an appearance on the Paragon Market?
A: None of the items we'll be giving away through this program are slated for the Paragon Market at this time.

Q: Will this be the only way to receive these items?
A: In short - no. We are constantly looking for ways to reward our community memebers. This includes in-game, Community Forums, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.

Well... it's a good idea you try to use social media more to open the information to as many people of the community as possible, but my only question is, will this be limited to twitter? I personally only use the CoH forums (I don't have twitter or facebook or anything for multiple reasons).

You guys said in TwitchStream there would be special stuff given away that can only be obtained with twitter. If this is new stuff (let's say a costume piece) will it be eventually accesible on another way? Also the screenshots and the pictures, will those be twitter limited too?

I have no problem that you guys use other stuff than forums, it's a good idea... but you have your own forums and tbh lately some things have been posted on facebook and twitter and not on the official forums (like the downtime last...week(?) iirc...) You asked in Twitch, I think. You saw the responses (psychotii said something very good I think)

Either way, good idea, as long the special stuff wont stay limited to twitter only (I don't mean that if you give a new costume piece away it should be put on the market instantly, but perhaps later on after a few months or something...).

Anyways, guess I best wish everyone good luck for the coming tweet code thursdays! It certainly seems interesting

PS: ignore spelling/grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language

We're focused on giving away these codes on Twiter right now. This isn't to say that Zwillinger or myself won't be caught on a random server from time to time broadcasting codes, but we won't be announcing it if/when we do.

We create promotions like this in order to get old/new/current City of Heroes players to join us on these sites as an extension of our community.

We will continue to support our other outlets (FB, G+ and our forums) with content/updates and will do our best to make sure that no matter what method you use, you have the most up to date information possible. If we've failed you in this regard, we certainly apologize, but it's not intentional (we don't play favorites).

Thanks for the feedback.

I- Uh-

Are these codes consumable? I.E If one player uses them, can another not? Is it going to be competitive like that, or is it going to be 'Freedom Friday- but on Twitter!'? Will I have to be following you to see the post with the code on it; Can you do that on Twitter?

Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.

I remember the "12 Days of Coralax" and how laggy the Twitter page was then.

I don't see this being any different.

And, I still think people were using some type "grab text from image" software to get codes *adjusts tinfoil hat*

Anyways, yay for community interaction - boo for using one-time codes on Twitter.

Meh. One time use codes as an incentive to go to a site I'd not use otherwise? I sincerely doubt that I'd be the lucky one, so it's not really winning me over.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

Its one thing to use this method for the costume replace powers, but for an actual costume piece? I don't particularly like it. Please ensure that this aura be available by alternate means as well.

Will the codes be just posted on the twitter account? Or will it be like the facepalm emote and we'll be able to use a code generation page to get the one-time use codes?

What is the code actually FOR? It just says "in-game stuff" in the OP, with no mention of what said stuff is.

Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

According to the Coffee talk, its for a new 'Dark Matter' Aura.

I have one word for this...

Bleh...

...There's more... TBH I never really been a tweeter and I really don't plan to start, hence the "bleh." Hell, I very rarely go to Facebook other than to network or to play catch up with people I don't see or talk to that often. I do wish the best of luck to our lucky folks who get the codes for the aura and/or other gifts to come with this new marketing tactic PS has came up with.

If this is the only way to get certain costume items then that is very unfortunate and a pretty bad decision. I'd hope you guys would say that they would be added eventually to the Paragon Market but I guess that hasn't really happened yet with other social media giveaways like the Facepalm emote.

Yes, they are Kirby Dots.

And they even started the give aways this afternoon to make up for the limited time tomorrow.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Yeah, not liking this at all. Not one bit.
I do understand the need to branch out and draw in new players, and that MAYBE Twitter can help you with that, but it just seems to me that while you're trying to build "new communities" elsewhere you're only succeeding in alienating and angering your community right here, on your own official website. If you were giving away the web grenades, or pieces that already exist, I probably wouldn't blink twice over the announcement. But you are offering an exclusive and desirable costume piece on a social media outlet that a lot of us don't/can't/won't use, and that's not kosher.
If nothing else, I hope that you plan on offering this aura somewhere else down the line.

Not using Twitter nor Facebook.
Not starting to do either.
Old fashioned ?
Maybe

For right now, the Dark Matter aura is going to be for promotional use only. There aren't any plans to put them up on the market.

This isn't to say that they won't be available as contest rewards, or for other activities online (Zwillinger gave some away last night on Virtue, I believe). It just happens that the focus right now is to build an audience on twitter.

Yep, not a fan either.

When you can explain to me the appeal of participating in a lottery with 5,000 other people to get something that's going to be taken within half a second of you posting it, and they claim it because they have faster hands, faster internet, people helping them, etc., you'll convince me to participate.

But I'm sure it'll be considered a rousing success and the trend will continue despite protest otherwise, with the shining feedback of "awesome thanks!" heard from people who were lucky enough to win blotting out any and all legitimate criticisms here, all while you decide against offering this in any other non-teeth gnashing manner.

Woo.

edit: aaaand called it.

Why have you chosen to make an actual costume piece so limited in this way?
