DCnU [Spoilers!]

So today's the day. Flashpoint #5 is out, officially ending the DC Universe and rebooting it in the new Justice League. What did you guys think?

I'm on the fence, and a little confused. First of all, JL was good. Jim Lee can draw really, really well. I liked what I saw there, so far. Flashpoint was underwhelming, because of all the tie-ins, and all the build up going nowhere. A entire summer of comics did not impact the story in any meaningful way. In fact, no characters but Flash and Batman did anything of any use, at all. And that's shameful. I did like all the twists given here, and the very human dialogue given to Barry. What concerns me is when he's in the timestream, and sees three timelines. He's told that the timelines were broken apart to prepare for "their arrival", and that they needed to come together. I'm not sure if this means the DCU, Vertigo, and Wildstorm have merged in anticipation of some threat on the horizon, of if it means that the DCU, Flashpoint, and DCnU universes need to be merged to create an even more new one. Either way, I got a vibe of "Crisis on Infinite Timelines" on the drawing board at DC. As a 15-year long DC fanboy, I tried to go into the DCnU with unbiased opinions, and I'm not wholly upset by what I was shown today. My opinion may swing when I get my hands on some of the books whose solicits were... let's politely say "effing awful", and hopefully authors besides Geoff Johns and Gail Simone will surprise me. We'll see.

See, I want to read these now, and I want to get the digital day and date versions, but I have one question....

WHERE THE HELL DO I GET THEM FROM??

Maybe I've missed something obvious, but I've looked all over the official DC Comics site and can't find anywhere to actually buy them!!

Someone, please, help me out!!

Comixology, or atleast, the app on my Android phone are not doing day of release digitals.

Which is a shame.

EDIT: Never mind that, just looked at my phone, and the new Justice League 01 is avilable for $3.99, may be purchasing this...

personally i won't be buying any comics less i can actually read them...which means a friggin zoom function on whatever app they sell them on. I can't believe marvel and DC and any app for reading comics are too stupid to put zoom functions in and I'm not supporting stupid people ^.^

Ah, the end of Flashpoint, also known as "The Flash and Batman Show." Alias the comic event that actually wipes itself out of existance by the end. *sigh* Interestingly, Barry remembers some of the events in the Flashpoint timeline, but not the timeline that came before it. The DCnU is now his accepted history. So, he's able to give Bruce a letter from Thomas, but he probably doesn't remember that part of the reason he was trying to "fix" that timeline was because of Iris. Weird. Anyway...

Justice League. Batman's the gruff and grumpy experienced one, GL is the arrogant young hotshot who's not yet come up against anyone or anything that he and his ring couldn't handle. Together, they fight crime! Superman's still largely a mystery, but Batman has apparently met him at least once already. The general public is wary or mistrustful of super-people at this point. Oh, and Vic Stone is not yet a Cyborg.

It's not bad so far

I get the impression that the Three Timelines that had to be merged were DC, Vertigo and Wildstorm. IE: all the elements they wanted to bring together to make their new universe.

Basically "Everything up to this point was actually the result of an Evil Threat trying to set things up for an easy invasion and now the Universe is the way it should have been"

Giving us foreshadowing for the next Big EVENT book probably next summer.

JL I didn't mind.
I think the Pacing was a little rushed in some spots.
Seems a bit silly that Batman can just swipe Hal's ring like that
Hal's Ego seems a little on overdrive but I guess that makes sense. He clearly hasn't encountered anything so far that he couldn't handle.
I like their choice for the Big Bad, He pretty much tops my list of "why the world needs a Justice League" villains.

I can understand them deciding to go look for Superman.
At this point in time there is only 1 Know Alien on the Planet and that's Superman. You find some piece of Alien tech that even Hal's GL encyclopedia can't ID, go ask the one Alien on the planet you know about.
and I understand why Superman clocked GL so quick.
He heard everything Hal said out there. He has clearly either just finished beating on some Lex goons or is still in the middle of it and all of a sudden some Green bugger shows up bragging about how easily he's going to lock him up and question him.

That look on the last page is pretty much "Lol, try again newb"

I kind of like it.

BTW it appears DC will be coming out with a trade that collects all the new #1 issues.

Finally, managed to get it, thanks to the comixology app on my phone, thanks for that link

Read it, enjoyed it. Was JL the only number 1 released so far then? When are the others out, every Wednesday in the US? Hopefully they have a reading order that's easy to understand, always hated it when I read something that referenced something that wasn't even out yet, happened way too often back in the late 90's!

Still, liked the JL issue, long live DC

Oh, and Batman can steal the ring because, even in this new Universe.....he's still the Batman

3700 issues i have of DCU New Earth...yeeeah I'm sad...

So JL starts with 5 years in the past and Batman is hated? i can't wait to here how they fit 20+ years of comic history into 5-8 years.

Was Power Girl and the JSA really cut out of the new DC?

I had some money issues so i stop purchasing all comics, letting go of Those two last, back in April?

I feel sad.

Power Girl I don't know what they are doing with her but she'll likely get a comic back or become part of the JL...

JSA has been kicked out of cannon and put into "Earth-2" they will get their own book that is outside of the cannon of the other series...

The 52 that are relaunching are not the only series that will be back as they've already confirmed a few others will be back like JSA it's just not gonna be this month and we have no date for them

I told you so.

They have an out with Batman, sort of, with him now having been active before Superman. I still don't see how he could have gone through up to 3 Robins and still be an urban legend. The truth is that all of that stuff could have happened, or at least all of the stuff that anyone cares about, but that the time frames for those events, where they were specifically stated, could mostly be shorter, since that's not what really matters about them.

I doubt they'll give any specific amount of time that he's been active, but I'd cringe if they tried to say that it was 5 years or more prior to Superman. It just doesn't make sense in the new continuity.

Raise your hand if you didn't think there'd be a massive mega-ultra super mega zord crossover event as one of the first things out of the gate...

Ya...thought so.

You just know this is a result of WB demanding a rise in sales by any and all means necessary since the Marvel films are hooking a new generation readers, so by attempting to bolster the DC properties they're actually screwing up the comics, basically the one thing they've been doing better than Marvel for a long time.

I would just like to add that, IMO, a rebooted Justice League without Martian Manhunter present as a founder (or even as just a non-founding member of the team for that matter) is pretty much epic fail right out of the gate.

(Yes, I do know that he shows up as a member of the new Stormwatch, but that is beside the point.)

Could be leaving a way to 'fix' things if this experiment doesn't pan out too.

I've never seen it done all that realistically, either, and I've only ever seen it done "well-ish" once.

True that. Main reason I quit collecting was that the events were more important than the actual characters themselves.

Karen Starr is appearing in the new Mr. Terrific series, as to whether or not she is Power Girl, that hasn't been made clear.
