How do you feel about sponsored content?
It would depend entirely upon who was offering and what they were offering.
I've seen that in the competitors product. Watched the ads, the items range from decent to meh and the ads the same. ::shrug::

And if I can skip it by staying VIP. I really am not interested in "Crey Cola, sponsored by Depends!"
While I can't help thinking it's tacky, part of me would totally take part in both of the examples in the OP, so I guess I wouldn't mind all that much.

I recall a couple of level mod/expansions for duke 3d from 2 separate *ahem* gentlemens magazines that were both in keeping with dukes theme and were very entertaining.
Really.
I'm so jealous of a game that gives you a sword of omens just for watching a commercial.
I honestly havent seen that game, i dunno, if it gets me the master sword and a green chainmail tunic, id gladly watch a commercial for a game i already preordered, but i'd have to see how it was carried out. the last time they did commercials, i didnt mind them, but they really didnt seem to be properly targeted at a mmo about superheroes.
I'd find the suggested method a bit tacky but still better than the alternative that was toyed with years ago, namely selling advertising space in game. Out of game, I'm used to ignoring the adverts of evil, corrupt corporations. In game, I only want to see them when I'm about to take them down.

I think it's a great idea, watch something in the launcher to get free stuff in game. That's assuming of course that they have no way to prove I'm not actually sitting at my desk at the time!
It would take something on the order of Lauren Bacall herself doing a Fancy Feast commercial to even pique my attention. And then the prize had *better* be a fully poseable and customizable in-game cat/kitten model.
We kitties have *very* short attention spans, after all!

I'm all for free stuff even if they try to sell me something first. I won't buy it if I don't want it so commercials never bother me.

Welcome to the City of Heroes launcher! Watch THIS to earn a free 'Lose Your Mind' emote for all your characters!
It'd probably be locked to US and Canada only and that'd piss me off.
Oh hell no.
There's a reason CoH has no other competitors. They all tried stunts like this idea... and those stunts did not work.
No.
Bad Voodoo by @Beyond Reach. Arc ID #373659. Level 20-24. Mr. Bocor has fallen victim to a group of hooded vigilantes who have been plaguing Port Oakes, interfering with illegal operations and pacifying villain's powers. He demands that revenge is taken on these miscreants and his powers are returned! You look like just the villain for the job. Challenging.
Besides, advertising means another business relationship for Paragon/NC Soft to worry about in addition to subscribers (i.e. us). That's proved tricky in the cases of tv and magazines, and there's no indication it wouldn't be similarly corrupting for games.
Let's see...
1) Suggestions forum please.
2) No.
Personally, I'm among the minority who actually liked the implementation (and way to turn off) of the in-game ad system. Granted, it didn't work out as well as intended, but still, it was a sensible way of doing it.
I don't believe the OP's suggestion would really fit for City.
Thank you for the time...

Putting aside every single other reason why this is an impractical and stupid idea, I would honestly quit the game over it. I don't like advertising in my entertainment -- it's obnoxious and crass.

I'd be ok with it - they could also offer the item in the Paragon market, so that players who didn't want to watch the advert could still get it.

Honestly, I do about the same thing already on Xbox Live with free gamerpics to enter contests and avatar awards, so I wouldn't mind it if it were limited to costume or base items in this game.
I would rather see a comic company or even some independent comic writers step up to sponsor and co-write/design VIP arcs. Kind of like the Guest Author thing in AE, only now they are official and can bring with them badges and such. Just not sure how much NC Soft would charge a writer/artist for that or if anyone other than Marvel or DC could afford it.

Wow I'm surprised how so many are absolutely against simply watching an ad. It'd be different if it also had a mini-survey at the end, but simply watching? Unless it's that some are easily swayed by shiny ads so will end up spending money.
That said, I wouldn't particularly mind, even if I didn't get anything for it. But for this type of medium, I'd rather they keep the ads within some type of theme. Maybe not ads for tampons or shoes or some random stuff. Action/Superhero movies and comics and games, yeah.

How do you feel about sponsored content? As an example, a competitor of City of Heroes has a mechanism in place where you are offered an in-game item in exchange for watching a commercial. This all takes place outside of the game, in the launcher, before the game is launched but after you've logged in.
So, for example, the competing game has a deal where you watch a Thundercats commercial and you receive a Sword of Omens or a logo tee-shirt or a logo poster to put on a house wall.
So, as a thought experiment and not as an indication of any kind of real-world example, The film _The Amazing Spiderman_ might offer an account-wide spider chest symbol unlock for watching a trailer of the movie.
How do you feel about that kind of sponsored content?
