Paragon Points Clarification

Hello everyone!

Jesse “Ghost Falcon” Caceres here! As we read through all of your feedback and questions about our eventual transition to City of Heroes Freedom, we’ve definitely noticed that there are a lot of questions about what exactly are Paragon Points worth, and how much you’ll be able to buy with points in the new Paragon Market. Well, let’s talk for a few minutes about some of these questions:

Q: We’ve been told that all VIP players will receive 400 Paragon Points per month as part of their subscription. What exactly does this mean?

  • All VIP players will receive 400 Paragon Points per month as part of their VIP subscription. Currently, 400 Paragon Points is equal to $5.00 (USD).
Q: As a current subscriber to City of Heroes, I receive 400 Paragon Points per month starting on July 1st, 2011. What does this mean as we move towards City of Heroes Freedom?
  • From July 1st, 2011 until City of Heroes Freedom launch, *ALL* paying customers that have an active billing “day” within the month will receive 400 Paragon Points. (Please note Trial Accounts do not receive this benefit).
For example:
  • If you renew or start a regular game (non-Trial) account on July 1st, you will receive 400 Paragon Points for the month of July.
  • If you renew or start a regular game (non-Trial) account on July 31st, you will receive 400 Paragon Points for the month of July..
  • If your Subscription ends on July 2nd, and you choose to NOT reactivate your subscription, you will receive 400 Paragon Points for the month of July when City of Heroes: Freedom launches.
  • For the months following, as long as you have an active account during that “month” (i.e. August, September, etc), your account will be credited with 400 Paragon Points for each month leading up to City of Heroes Freedom Launch.
So I know that right now, 400 Paragon Points = $5.00 (USD) but what I don’t have an idea of is what exactly 400 Points can buy me.

As mentioned earlier, 400 Paragon Points is equivalent to $5.00 (US Dollars), and I’ve gone on record that 400 Paragon Points will allow players to buy a lot of “stuff”. I’ve listed a smattering of pricing examples below, including the new Signature Stories, that will hopefully give you a better sense of general Paragon Point values. Please note that these prices (and others in our Beta) are currently the *target* prices, and may change prior to City of Heroes: Freedom Launch.

Points * Dollar Equivalent * Item
20..........$0.25......................Wizard Beard (From the Magic Pack)
40..........$0.50......................Classic Steampunk Hat (From the Steampunk Pack)
40..........$0.50......................Pop Dance Emote (From the Party Pack)
60..........$0.75......................Bioluminesc ent Chest (From the Mutant Pack)
60..........$0.75......................Wolf Head (From the Animal Pack)
60..........$0.75......................Organic Armor Sword (From the Mutant Pack)
80..........$1.00......................Smoke Bomb Costume Change Emote (From the Martial Arts Pack)
80..........$1.00......................Wonderful Wind-Up Wings (From the Steampunk Pack)
80..........$1.00......................Runes Aura (From the Origins Pack)
100........$1.25......................Technology Origin Cape (Impervium Mantle) – (From Origins Pack)
400........$5.00......................Complete Magic Costume Set (from the Magic Pack)
400........$5.00......................Signature Stories
(NOTE: VIPs GET SIGNATURE STORIES FOR FREE, AS PART OF VIP STATUS)
800......$10.00......................Character Server Transfer Token
(NOTE: VIPs GET ONE TRANSFER TOKEN FREE PER MONTH)
800......$10.00......................Character Respec
1600....$20.00......................5 Character Slot Tokens

So let’s say I want to purchase more points than my monthly VIP allocation of 400. What different ways will I be able to purchase Paragon Points:

  • To cover both bases, I want to be sure to clarify the two ways players will be able to acquire Paragon Points:
    • The first is through VIP Subscription where VIP customers receive 400 free Paragon Points per month.
    • The second is through the in-game Store.
      • Points can be purchased in Paragon Point “bundles”.
      • The smallest bundle size will be $5.00 for 400 Paragon Points.
      • If a player buys Paragon Points in larger bundles, additional Bonus Points will be added to the bundle. At this time, the “Bonus Points” for the higher bundle purchases is still being determined.
      • There will be several payment options for players, including various credit cards and Paypal.
We are exploring additional options for purchasing Paragon Points, and will update you once those plans have been solidified and set in stone.

Thanks for spending the time to read through this post.

Next week, I will be covering how multi-month subscription plans and game time cards will be working once City of Heroes Freedom launches.

Interesting. This says, to me, that I am now paying $10/month for my VIP Sub, and $5/month for 400 PP. I think that's a pretty good way to look at it.

Are those costume unlock prices account wide? They should be. Otherwise, we're all looking at a massive increase in cost per costume part. Unlocking the wizard beard alone for all 36 potential slots on a server would cost more than half the current price of the Magic pack.

edit: thanks Ghost Falcon, fears laid to rest.

Costume unlock prices are account wide.

Uhhhhhh.....

Why would multi-month pre-pays work differently except to front load all their 400/month points which should be obviously a Bad Idea in a variety of ways?

It's nothing bad. He's just clarifying some questions we've had.

So, a new player can sub up for a month on July 15 and let it expire on August 15 and get 800 points for having a subscribed day in both July and August.

And then resubscribe for just one month on Sept 15, Nov 15, Jan 15, Mar 15, and May 15.

They wind up paying for 6 months and for those 6 months they are VIPs. And during the 6 months they are not subscribed, they are Premium.

And even though they only paid for 6 months, they get 12 months worth of 400 point rewards.

Is that correct?

EDIT: I see I was mistaken: It's only July in which being an active subscriber for part of the month counts as for the full month. It seems, starting in August, you'll need to be active for the whole month to get the 400 points.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that it's the same as we have now for multi-month plans: you get a small discount.

This is just an example list of the things available for purchase with Paragon points, correct?
I mean, will we be able to buy smaller numbers of Character slots, maybe even mission architect story slots? About how much do you estimate powersets might cost?

Finally, maybe not exactly related, but I'm curious now if VIPs who are subscribed from july 1st to launch will also be earning monthly server transfers?

how i see it being VIP we get at least 1200 points worth of free stuff, with an additional 400 points per month to use on whatever essentially letting us buy boosters for free as well

this is definitely a bonus to VIPs imo and im gonna stay with the pay plan

I approve of being able to use Paragon Points to buy Booster Pack items. I also like the idea of being able to use these points to pick up Character Slots and game 'services', like ReNames and Server Transfers. I also like the idea of being able to purchase Costumes and some of the other items from Veteran Rewards.

On the other hand, things like City Traveler that intrinsically change the way characters can be created, EATs, and even the Gift of Merits, I feel should be Earned... 'the hard way', as it were.

As for Game Content, zones, missions, access to Pocket D, and the other areas of City of Heroes/Villains/Praetorians, I will be horribly disappointed if these are ever restricted from VIPs. This sort of content is... part of the continuing 'contract' between subscribers and the game company and the Developers. I'll allow that major expansions to the game world may require additional outlay - this accounts for CoV and GR.

I worry that the restrictions on Premium players are too strict, but considering that their alternative is to Not Play At All... it seems acceptable. The restrictions on Free players also seems a bit tight, but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Mostly, I remain optimistic about the whole 'Freedom' expansion, but the lingering fears bite me at odd moments.

Be Well!

All we do to earn most of those things is give them money...

So are these signature stories similar to the guild wars epic stories where you play another character, or do you play as yourself?

I think they mentioned playing along side some of the signature characters in these.

Put it this way:

In CoH:Freedom, as an F2P player, you'll be able to make 2 characters from a pick of 8 different AT's, with a lot of power sets available.

In another super hero-y free to play game, you're limited to single concept archetypes. Person with sword, rather than person with sword who can blaze with righteous glory, or crackle with divine lightning, or person with no sword but fists and feet of fury and a determined glint in their eye, or person with sharp spines and evil aura. And can then customize the look of those powers too, to more fit your concept.

From just one AT.

That's a bit more freedom for free, IMO.

Looking forward to the next part, since I'm an annual subscriber and thus won't have a billing date until September!

Anyhow, nice read, and I'm quite pleased with what I see

  • From July 1st, 2011 until City of Heroes Freedom launch, *ALL* paying customers that have an active billing “day” within the month will receive 400 Paragon Points. (Please note Trial Accounts do not receive this benefit).
For example:
  • If you renew or start a regular game (non-Trial) account on July 1st, you will receive 400 Paragon Points for the month of July.

So what if we DON'T have a active billing day in july, but DO have an active account the entire month (and the months after it)? For example, I buy my access in 6 month increments. I don't actually know off the top of my head when my billing cycle starts/stops but I could have easily just payed for my 6 month period sometime this month, which means I won't be billed again for 6 months.

I guess the thing throwing me off here is the phrase "active billing day" as I am only billed once every 6 months.

EDIT: Looking at this more closely, it looks like the last point would apply in the case I mentioned above (For the months following, as long as you have an active account during that “month” (i.e. August, September, etc), your account will be credited with 400 Paragon Points for each month leading up to City of Heroes Freedom Launch), however all the references to having an "active billing day" in July are again, making it look like I actually have to be billed during the month of july to kick this off.

This should include purchases in Steam the way TF2, etc works, since CoH is already available on Steam. (Speaking of which, you guys should totally do a Steam promo when this launches. Figure out a way to include a limited TF2 hat for trying it out and you'll get a godzillion people to at least give it a try.)

So given your examples, what I am not clear on is once the game transforms into Freedom, will new content (beyond the monthly missions), e.g. powers, costumes etc. ever just get added to the game for VIPs and be available without us having to do anything or going forward is all of that content just added to the store and we need to use our points to purchase it?

In other words, I understand the store replaces Super Boosters but does it also replace the "free" costume sets, powers etc. that would be released as Issues.

Technically everyone has an active billing date. It's simply the calendar date in the month that your subscription would renew.

For example: Your 12 month sub renews every April 14th. Your billing date is the 14th of the month.
