My first thought... "Tell that to Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer"
*one quick pass through the Internet later* My second thought... "Why am I not surprised Marvel got their hands on him, even briefly?" |

I'm betting the IP in question isn't Marvel. The chainsword is a heavily used weapon in a certain futuristic battle game with space marines and orks. Said game system has been a tabletop game since 1987, and had a demo of their upcoming MMO last year. They've had countless spin-offs and you might say that they are a workshop of games.

It's not a chainsword, it's a chainsaw HELD like a sword and clearly still has a regular chainsaw motor on it. If a basic shovel can be both a mace and an axe, why can't a chainsaw be put under swords if it's still obviously a normal chainsaw?
I mean, if that alone were enough for a claim of copyright infringement then I'm obviously completely unclear on just how broad the definition of a 'ConflictMace' chainsword is, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they wouldn't have a leg to stand on since the model in-game would be nothing like their concepts, figures, drawings, sketches, technical specifications, etcetera.
If I included all the S/L melee sets that would add at least three more. There are a TON of them. Weapon sets alone take up most of those, but still just getting more sets that do basically the same thing.
Not that I'm not going to play the thing to at least try it out, I would just rather they did more interesting things than "Hey, you know what we need? A fourth sword set." |
They're not giving a 4th Sword set.
They're giving us a BUSTER SWORD POWER SET! \o/

I'm not worried about weapon sets being boring, really.
When I make a character and go "hmm, I want a neato weapon", I don't have many choices. Axe and Mace are horribly generic attack sets, and Broadsword and Katana, while containing a game-changing neato build-revolving power, are straight-up copies of each other.
But nowadays, we get actual differently-playing NEW sets- Dual Pistols and Kinetic Melee and Electric Control oh my! I don't really care what a new set is themed around anymore, I KNOW it's going to end up being fun and different.
With the latest sets we've gotten, I have confidence in the powers that be. <3
That one on the lest looks like the worlds most painful paddle.

I'm hoping that they also include some over sized axes in there to Mayby a giant anime mallet as well.
First time I was a chainsword was in the game Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.².

Hows does it feel to be a chain sword? To feel the ripping and gnashing of your enemies flesh as you cut into the marrow of their very bones!

and specific visual design.
If they want to do it, they can find a way. It just probably wouldn't satisfy too
many people unless they made it a new power set entirely, to make the visual
and audio effects work right.

I think you guys have nothing to worry about. This set obviously does PSI damage. The enemies see you charging at them with a railroad sign and their heads asplode!
I know mine did when I found out about this.
Didn't they say something a while back about not wanting to put in silly weapons? Now we get ridiculously oversized swords and railroad crossing signs. I demand Swordfish Melee now or at least a giant plastic squeaky mallet.
As has been pointed out above, chainsaw swords are not limited to only one IP so we could have them here as well but you'll need a good name. I suggest... 'Razor Blade'. Then we could even make barber villains. "Just a little off the top? Okay! *slash!* Hrm, maybe a little TOO much. *cue villainous laughter*"
*sings* Shave and a haircut...
"And yes, it worries me that people know how many pipelines their graphics cards have and the bus speed of a PCIe-16x, yet don't know how to convert between bordering time zones."

Finally, and worth its own paragraph, was BABs stout refusal to put in stupid weapons in the game, like fish, clown shoes, balloon animals and suchforth, not because they were goofy so much as because they don't pack a punch. This is not the case with any of the weapons we've seen for this new set. They may be crude an unusual, but hit someone with them, and they WILL feel it. Not so with a fish, which may have weight to it, but has little structural strength when compared to metal weapons. There's always room for absurd weapons in the game. You just have to make sure they'd be at least marginally useful as actual weapons.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

First of all, that was BABs who said it, and he got sacked (unfortunately). Secondly, what BABs said that large weapons looked silly if they were put in sets whose animations did not impart the proper weight to the swing, making the big weapons look like they were made of Styrofoam. This has been remedied by making these their own set, thus giving them proper weight in animation. Thurd, he did not want to put in weapons which did not look like they could do the damage type that the set was doing, so no pipe wrenches in Broadsword or swords in War Mace. I expect to see this set deal both Smashing and Lethal damage, or even just Smashing damage, so most weapon types apply.

Then I saw the Railroad Crossing Sign a few days later.
I love my job.
