Quote:Aye. It's the death knell for MMoG player investment, especially anything NCSoft. Basically, it says if you play an MMO, don't get emotionally invested in the game or your characters, which is entirely what MMO subscriptions are based on.The most damaging part of this debacle may be for MMO players in general. I think we all can accept the fact that MMOs close, but if the way this game was closed is considered standard and acceptable in this industry, we're all screwed, no matter what game we're playing.

What did I just watch!?
Glad to see you're keeping busy...
and thank you for all the memories! -
I already backed this project. It's going to have a Pay Once, Play Forever model like Guild Wars and it has the creator Wing Commander behind it, and the tech demo looks great.
Of course, it could be a flop, but I'd love to see this have the chance to be created to whether or not that is the case.
And it has a single player campaign to boot! -
This thread necro makes me happy.

Quote:There is always a lot of hands in the pot. (e.g. when you throw trash in Wal-Mart's parking lot, you don't hurt Wal-Mart, you hurt the little minimum wage employee who has to clean up the lot.)I'll admit, they made a little more off of me.
Why? Two words: Arena Net.
They're a group of Developers that have poured their heart and soul into making an outstanding game, a game that's quickly showing itself to be something special. The community is small, but it's growing, and there are more than a few people that simply love the game. Their only sin is that they, like the people at Paragon Studios, worked with/for NC Soft.
NCSoft, the company, may not be moral or caring about their former customers, but boycotting NCSoft not only hurts the company, it hurts all of the people who currently still work for them (e.g. plenty of good people, I'm sure.)
I definetly won't be feeling any trust in NCSoft to protect my interests when emotionally investing in an MMoG franchise of theirs from now on, but I do have a lot of respect for the good people who helped develop Guild Wars 2 and continue to support it, regardless of my feelings towards the parent company. -
It would seem that you can still upgrade to VIP by applying a valid retail box code to your account as well. I just upgraded to VIP by applying a Going Rogue Complete Collection code.
-
Quote:Just applied the Going Rogue complete collection to my account and it upgraded me to VIP. Yay!I may end up being out of luck then, because I already had a non-complete edition Going Rogue code applied, and I'm trying to apply a complete edition code.
I'm pretty sure I've used every retail code available, so I might end up having to play Freemium until the end of days, which is sad. -

Remember, you can only apply codes that have NOT previously been applied to the account.

I'll be trying a Going Rogue box code as soon as it arrives from Amazon. Will post when I have the results.

Meh, not a great way to end a game, but not Paragon's fault. I wish they left time cards valid still, in the least, so at least those of us really dedicated could still purchase the last few months of VIP to end the game.
-
Wow, sadness so eloquently portrayed in that picture.

I'm up for whatever saves this game. I really never wanted to stop playing it, and am willing to pony up the same $15/mo fee I always did in order to keep it running.
If Sony is willing to take it, I say, let's go!
And as for SWG, I left at the first combat upgrade (CU), so I didn't even get to experience the NGE that everyone who stayed talks about. -
I just want any method to become VIP before the game ends. I want to go out in glory, not as someone who cannot access the majority of their characters, nor participate in all of the game content with my online friends.
Take my money! :P -
Quote:I lost all confidence in them as a company after seeing what they did with the first 'combat upgrade'.That would piss me off. I vowed to never give SOE another dollar of my money after SWG, and I won't break that vow.
But...I don't know what I would do if they aquired City of Heroes. Assuming it still remained in control by Paragon Studios, I would continue to purchase from them. -
Someone on the Player Questions forum mentioned a 60-day time card upgraded their account. Someone else mentionted applying an unused Retail Code (Architech Edition) upgraded their account as well.
There may be hope, and I'm just waiting for a few more responses before I buy up some myself off of Amazon. -
Quote:I'm really tempted to buy one off of Amazon, but others are saying their 30-day time cards will not change their status to VIP.Yesterday I added a 60 day card to each of my accounts, though I don't know if they've changed it since.
Hmm, I think I'll wait a couple of days and see what shakes out. -
Quote:I know the 60-day one worked for you, but someone in another thread said their 30-day card didn't update their status. If you can get a hold of a time or game card, you can use those as well. I had a couple cards I hadn't used yet and used them to extend my VIP status.
I'm planning to buy one off of Amazon, but hoping I find a little more certainty it will work first. -
Quote:Well, that is really good to hear. I might just find myself an Architech Edition on Amazon or something. I really want to play as VIP until the servers shut down. For those curious, I had a CoV Collector's Edition box, Going Rogue box, and Architect Edition box that I hadn't used the codes for yet. I was in the process of doing that when I saw this post and gave the AE code to V-Tron... should work, he said it updated on his web account but hadn't updated to the game yet but maybe he hadn't logged all the way out. Anyway, the other two codes turned two of my freebie accounts to VIP, so for whatever that's worth for me, it works at least.
If only they had given us like 48 hours notice before they killed everything. Ugh. -
Quote:Well, suddenly dropping the entire studio isn't really a graceful way to end a game.Wait, wait, wait... as of yesterday I thought codes still worked, but now they haven't?
So... when players figured out a way to play the game and just use up resources that we might otherwise ask for a refund for, they "fixed" the issue so that we couldn't play?
NCSoft isn't just ending the game, they're trying to proactively destroy any chance of playing in VIP mode. That's suspiciously petty and mean spirited sounding.
I'm with you, I really wanted to end the game by playing in VIP status. -
Quote:Thank you, Zwill, for all the laughs from the vidcasts. Thank you, Paragon, and everyone there, for a wonderful time and helping to make it last as long as it lasted! So please, let's not go hog wild.
Let's keep the forums a place where everyone can share their memories and plan for the future.
On a personal note, I've got a lot to work on right now, so please help me out here in any ways that you can. I empathize with the feelings some of you are going through right now. I understand it.
Help us all go out on a happy note
I wish you all the best of luck! -
Or alternatively, take my money! :P
Seriously, I'd love to end City of Heroes with playing a bunch before it ends. -
With no way to upgrade to VIP, many of us 7+ year veteran players are left out in the cold with no way to screenshot our beloved characters or play the heck out of City of Heroes before the servers go down. Let's make it go out with a bang!
Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if we activated VIP status for all premium players until the end of days? City could go out with wonderful memories being made up until the final moment. -
Someone reported in game that time cards are disabled.
Really!? Can we at least give all freemium players VIP access for the final hurrah of the game?
