Given the recent 'fun' we have had with NC Soft, it occurs to me that some of you are most likely Science Fiction Fans. For those who have played games like Privateer and Freelancer, this game should have a nice warm familiar feeling. It is an MMORPG looking at a pricing model akin to Guild Wars but without publisher. There are some very good points it makes about the model they are using to build this game.

Check the site out, the game information and FAQs, and if this tickles your interest feel free to pledge your support (the putting money where your mouth is) from $10 to $10,000+. If you see me in this game, you may address me as Rear Admiral. Considering the amount of money I have spent on games, this is a drop in the bucket.

Personal points of interest:
*Not only a main public server but private servers are allowed and supported.
*Space Sim
*players actions shape the universe.
*unlike EVE, you can actually pilot your ship.

Cheers!

Very interesting!

I really like the mindset behind this game and where the designer says he's coming from regarding it (both in philosophy and in my interests).

I hadn't heard of this, so thank you. I will definitely be keeping an eye on it, at the very least.

There's just one aspect that would make a huge difference for me and I imagine that it falls outside of their focus and would be too much of a drain of resources compared to the virtual benefit it would provide (for me)... personal character (and ship) customization.
It's just a huge, nonstarter aspect of any and all games for me. And this was not born from my playing of CoH (it's really why I gave CoH a try). I've been of this mindset since before most any games offered character customization... and then, once I got the taste of what could be done (years ago), I just can't go back, hehe (seriously).

So, I am not bashing this game if it ends up not offering a lot of character customization. It's just a matter of fact that it'd majorly thwart me being a part of it.
So, I'm curious to see what happens along those lines, because it might offer such things (in spades, even). The video about immersion was nice and all and I agree 100%. For me though, having the same body shape, outfits, colors, just a selection of faces would kill all the other tremendous aspects of immersion that they are putting into the game. And, again, they very well may let players go nuts with it... we'll see (have you seen any word on that?)!
I'm also curious about nonhumans and aliens and such. I prefer my space fare with aliens and things, but if it is maybe a scenario of first discoveries, I could maybe enjoy only being human.
I'm just curious about those aspects.

Regardless, it seems to be a great project and I'm highly intrigued by it.

Would bet on the mind of Chris Roberts any day. Been keeping up with this and glad to see it's pushing forward, thanks to fans everywhere. I missed the Wing Commander hype (though one of my brothers played all of them I think), but I played the heck out of Freelancer, both the stock game and a ton of mods and persistent player-run servers, and for several years it was a game I returned to again and again (LOVED the Battlestar Galactica remake mod, I used to play on a persistent server with that running). To be honest sometimes I still look at that game on my shelf and consider installing it. It is a shame, too, that I know some of the details behind what Chris Roberts had planned for Freelancer development and what Microsoft did to those plans in order to push it out the door faster. He actually left Freelancer development over that, before it was even finished. And I didn't blame him. It sounds like he may be asking for another shot at this and I hope he gets it.

Oh and Electric Knight, it sounds like there might be a fair amount of character customization...for a space sim. But for what we're used to? Doubt it--HOWEVER, keep in mind that if the game is moddable, that might help alleviate those concerns. I'm going to keep an eye on that aspect of the game as news develops though.

Boy, Paragon Studios sure did spoil us, eh?

I'm definitely interested to find out.
Did you ever play wwiionline?
I was in beta testing for that many moons ago and... I'm no fan of war nor of warfare games and such... I was just so absolutely astounded and in love with the idea of a single game that was on-foot adventure, full flight sim, tank sim (and a number of regular automobiles) and each and all of these (and more, once boats would come into play) would be within the same world and taking shape and interacting on the same plane/playing-field... Amazing!
Anyway, that just came out of me, hehe... I just love such combinations and was apparently just reminded of such!

They sure did. And wonderfully so!
As I said, though, my demands for customization go way back.
Still, yeah, this game made this extremely particular/picky gamer satisfied.

The wing commander similarity should be familiar to you since he worked on development of the game.

Worked on it? He created it, it was his baby. He loved it so much that he made a horrible movie about it (which just shows you can't bring an editorial eye to something you love that much).

However I'm not sure if a Kickstarter funded MMO like F2P game is actually possible. If it comes out I would probably be interested in it but right now ...

I was a huge fan of Freelancer, so I'll probably take a look at your link, once
I get home from work.

That said, Star Trek Online (where I've gone since giving CoH up for dead) is also
a space sim, where you pilot your own ship, and if you're also a fan of Battlefield 1942,
it offers a similar ground combat experience as well.

...and, it's free to play...

Not even considering the "Trekkie appeal", the game you mention will have to
be pretty compelling indeed to beat that (at least, for me - YMMV)

I was going for understatement. I prefer people to do some discovery on their own if they need a nudge or two, then I'll add it.

I can appreciate your not wanting to put money up right now for the game - having been burned by NCSoft.

Can the graphics be......turned down?

The game looks (as in, gameplay/immersion/setting) amazing, but if it's going to take the CSI's super computer to run it (like it looks like its going to), I may as well not even try.

Like, I don't need to see every single turret on a space ship to care about the game, nor do I need to see the freckles on the freckles on the characters *** either.

Who's Rathi? and why do you want me to kill him?

I already backed this project. It's going to have a Pay Once, Play Forever model like Guild Wars and it has the creator Wing Commander behind it, and the tech demo looks great.

Of course, it could be a flop, but I'd love to see this have the chance to be created to whether or not that is the case.

And it has a single player campaign to boot!
