DC Relaunching Everything in the Fall?

Soooo.... Marvel had Spidey make a deal with the devil (actually Mary Jane) to remove the marriage. To top them DC reboots the universe.... Sorry not paying for more Lois and Clark tension. The build up to the marriage was great and the story has been done in two television shows. For me the Big Two have settled in for pushing the next big movie and resetting the universes to make the movie going public less timid about starting their collections. For the fans that have been with them over the years... It just feels like we are being left out. For me it's time to bid the two universes farewell. I will still support DC's animated projects (Goooo Young Justice!) and Marvel's big Avengers movie momentum, but as for what I grew up collecting... I just remember the upper left corner of Marvel Team-up 150 with Spidey walking into the sunset. I think it's time for me to do that and keep my memories of what was in place.

The DCU has never had an actual reboot. It has had retcons and a setting of official canon as well as removing other canon.

Crisis on Infinite Earths was more a story line reason for focusing only on the modern age and defining what is actually canon... It did not reboot the DCU... especially since it just set the timeline to Y10.

Zero Hour while the story did reboot within itself, it simply defined Y100+ and retconned some problems and since again it didn't start telling stories at Y0 it was not a reboot

Infinite Crisis reintroduced the things eliminated in CoIE in a more organized way and with a organized multiverse...

Anyways the "New DCU" has me interested in what they mean and makes me wonder if they are going to reveal what they have been hinting at for a while... that the 52 universes and the infinite multiverse is actually just one layer within a mega infinite multiverse...

They hinted at it at the end of 52, they pretty much stated it in Blackest Night, one of the major writers hinted at it while answering a question, and I doubt they launching 52 issue #1s by coincidence.
/e yawwwwwn. I just got tired reading everything you just posted.

How about a suggestion for both Marvel and DC: STOP resetting/rebooting/restarting/triming down/whatever the hell you want to call it everything. Just tell good stories and let some history build for a year or two at least. That way character actions and deaths actually have consequences.

Till then I've stopped taking either universe seriously. As far as I'm concerned both universes are no better than fan fiction going forward.

They don't really have a choice as far as Superman is concerned, thanks to the lawsuit from the Siegel and Shuster estates. Besides the costume changes and origin adjustments for Superman, they might have to remove Lois Lane altogether.

So as long as they're changing Superman, they might as well change everything else too. Fortunately it looks like the Green Lantern Corps (and related rainbow colors) will be getting off lightly.

I always thought it selfish of Supes for dating a normal especially since, unless it changed, the whole world knows he likes her. She should have been killed now by anyone of the villains Supes has stopped and was looking for a way to get back at him. What is he going to do about it? Throw them back into the revolving door that is comic book justice system? He would have to spend the rest of his life knowing she died because of him. Batman knows this. At least in the JLU cartoons.

Nah, if something really bad happens, he can spin the earth backwards and reverse it. :P

I'm beginning to think i'm the only one that has read comics lately...

Back when Clark proposed and revealed himself to be Clark shortly after some stuff happened and he broke it off for exactly these types of reasons...

Lois's response... "Stop being so arrogant. It is my decision to put myself in this danger and for you to not let me take this risk is akin to you trying to control my life...and besides with being a reporter I'm in danger all the time anyways"

Batman has pretty much the same outlook as Lois. While he believes it is wrong to bring someone into his world once they are in that world it is their choice to stay or not. This has been the case with all the Batwomen, Bat-Men, Silver Saintcloud (or whatever her name is), Jezebel Jet, a few others not affiliated with the Batfamily, all but 1 Batgirl (and a robin)...

Stephenie Brown he tried to force her to quit for years and he found that ended bad and Vicky Vale he's tried to keep out of the life style more or less over the years.

This is completely wrong.

I am 100% certain that Superman's origin as an alien from Krypton will not be touched. Lois Lane will not be gotten rid of. The names "Clark Kent," "Superman," and "Kal-El" will not be lost.

The lawsuit with the Siegels and Shusters is about them wanting money. They aren't trying to rip the character away from Time Warner so they can publish their own Superman stories. If they did that, each of them would only have half of a character, and neither of them would be able to profit from it. Besides that, the Siegels/Shusters wouldn't know what to do with such a huge intellectual property. They're just holding out for more money, but it will be settled out of court.

The costume change is purely a boneheaded attempt to make Superman "look cool" even though his costume is iconic and hasn't had any drastic permanent changes since the logo was finalized in the late 40s. It will revert to normal within a few years. I suspect this entire "New DCU" will revert to normal within a few years, too. The question is: how many people will still be around, or willing to come back, when it happens?

Spinning the Earth backwards was a special effect to illustrate that he was traveling backwards through time. He did not reverse time by reversing the rotation of the Earth, but rather, the rotation of the Earth reversed because Superman was traveling backwards through time. It is a very common misconception and I don't really understand why. I suspect Seinfeld might have something to do with it.

There was an episode of Superman TAS where Lois got zapped to an alternate Earth where she was killed and Superman couldnt save her so in his grief and missery he joined up with Luthor to bring "order" to Metropolis. Luthor of course was doing things behind that Superman's back and when Superman found out he repented and stopped Luthor.

Point is this: some villains may have figured out that Lois is a "Safety valve" of sorts that helps keep Superman under control. Any villain that kills her runs the risk of pushing Superman over the edge and facing his wrath.

There is a difference between being in danger and having someone actively out to kill you.

Hello, the is Lois Lane reporting at the scene where...BLAM!!!
OMG!!!Lois has been shot! Someone call the cops!

She's the one being arrogant and selfish. If Superman is forced to choose between Lois and a thousand people on a train, he'll choose her every time.

I don't read many comics from either DC or Marvel these days because they've screwed them up so badly in recent years. I did read Batman and Robin which, while competently written and nicely drawn, was just not very interesting overall.

DC relaunching everything is dumbness. Throwing out the continuity will likely get a lot of non-comics readers collecting the numerous Issue 1s, so DC will crow about that, but sales will just drop off back to normal. If they do damage to the characters in the reboot, it will be like One More Day where Spider-Man's sales took a hit, and they'll backpedal within a year or two.

read Red 5 Comics. Those are some good, fun books. Especially Atomic Robo.

Don't completely agree with your DC assessment. Wanted to say that IDW publishes some wonderful books that put Marvel and DC to shame.

Told my FLCS that I'm done with DC as of last Wed. I do not like Flashpoint and I see no need to keep throwing money at DC. More money to buy other books from Marvel and IDW

There are only two things I disagree with regarding this relaunch; a new Action Comics #1 and a new Detective Comics #1.

Sadly, they are on their way. Here is the cover to the new Detective Comics #1:

Reason for the reboot from DC: To gain new readers by offering comics, characters, and stories unburdened by a massive amount of continuity and backlog

?!?!

Maybe it's just me to which this statement makes no sense.....I was born in 1984, and DC Comics existed when my late grandparents were children. I had no problem jumping into DC or Marvel, despite decades of backlog and continuity.

If people weren't buying comics before this, even if they know who Batman and Superman are, what is going to make them start now?

And personal nitpick: This reboot completely negates Blackest Night and Brightest Day.

This is what always bugs me. I keep hearing people talking about how new readers are so confused by the continuity.

I read comics VERY sporadically in my younger days and only started actually following books in... late middle school/early high school. Even then, I stuck with Marvel. Mainly X-Men. Sure, there were things now and then that I didn't know the history of, but nothing that really bothered me. I'd just think "oh, that musta happened before", shrug, and go on reading.

Same story with DC when I got into a couple of their series. Missing a few references to past events never phased me. And as the internet became more prevalent, the entire thing became a moot issue. Anything I was really interested in was a quick wiki-search away.

But even then, I hardly ever bothered to go and look it up. And even when I did, it was just for personal interest and not cause I felt I needed it to understand the story.

I got into DC after Crisis on Infinite Earths happened and John Byrne took over Superman. This was the 'gateway' that got me into other DC properties.

Either they got this wrong, or both Newsarama and IGN got the title wrong. 'Cause both IGN and Newsarama has that title as Red Hood and the Outlaws.
I tend to think that Bleeding Cool got it wrong. And still no news on Tim Drake/Red Robin.

Oh, and do you think you could change your text color there? Kinda hard to read

it depends... Tim recently got put with a new team on top of the titans, so it could be a follow up on that.
