Pulling just a part of your post...I believe the part in Episode II with 'the giant poundy whatsits with molten metal' actually came from the mind of Steven Spielberg...memory is not what it used to be, but I recall reading that part of the movie was a late addition after George did a private screening of the film to a small group of folks.

EDIT: found this in a quick search....more later

    Homing Beacon #76

The latest Homing Beacon has arrived, and today we get to talk about the Geonosian droid factory! A late addition to the postproduction of Episode II was the elaborate Geonosian droid factory set piece, which was conceived, scripted, previsualized and shot months after principal photography had wrapped. Visual Effects Supervisor Ben Snow and his unit tackled the eleventh hour action sequence.

"We used a combination of computer graphics and miniature work for the environment," says Snow. "Since everything in the factory is moving and interacting, we made a lot of it in computer graphics so we can deal with the complexity and the interaction."
The rust-hued smoke-belching clamor of the factory was a perfect showcase for the signature "used universe" feel of Star Wars. "To get a realistic grime and gritty feel, we enhanced our shots with CG and real smoke, sparks and pyrotechnical elements," says Snow. "To make the sequence tense and scary, we wanted to push for a realistic feel."
To that end, Snow took a crew of computer graphic artists and model-makers to a real automobile factory in the San Francisco Bay Area. "We looked at all these machines in action and try to get a good feel for it," he says. "One of the daunting things is just how much complexity there is in this real factory, and trying to reproduce that in computer graphics and visual effects is a bit overwhelming. But you're trying to convey an impression of it rather than having to get every bit of grime in there."
Even the car factory was judged too austere. "We decided we needed to take the team somewhere a bit nastier," says Snow. "We visited a foundry in the East Bay, and this was paydirt as far as I was concerned. Dark, and dirty, and old, I think it really defined the look we were going for. It had the texture and the sulfuric industrial smell that we wanted to try to evoke in our work. We took a bunch of photographs that we used as texture reference when painting our CG models and miniatures. It's really important to have good reference. It keeps us honest, particularly if we're doing a largely computer graphic scene."
The final factory environment was created using a combination of computer-generated elements and miniatures, with bluescreen plate photography of the actors properly aligned into the virtual surroundings. Helping add to the realism of the finished shots was a sense of purpose to the enveloping chaos. "In a lot of the shots the machines could just be whirling around threateningly, but I thought it would make the sequence more exciting to see that the machines were actually building things," says Snow. "One of the things I did was to sit down and try to work out what each conveyer belt was doing, and made little maps showing the manufacturing process for the animators and artists on the sequence."

So what's fascinating to me about all this is not that a third SW trilogy is happening but the fact that will have taken Lucas almost 40 years to accomplish. For me it's pretty much always been a matter of when, not if.

Now obviously 35+ years ago I'm sure Lucas never had a clue that he'd be selling a movie company he founded to Disney for $4+ billion so I'll admit that detail was surprising to me too. But the key idea that Star Wars was always meant to be (at the very least) a trio of trilogies has been Lucas' grand scheme for decades. I just hope for his sake he'll live long enough to see it come to fruition.
Yeah, the 9-movie idea was around at the beginning - and Uncle George did his best to backpedal away from it over the past decade. I really, really like the idea of Lucas providing the rough ideas and outline of a new trilogy, with someone else converting it into a polished, final product.
  4. First thought...holy <bleep>!

Second thought...my daughter and her classmates will now have their 'own' trilogy. I never, ever even considered that as a possibility.

I need to look into this more to see how this will impact Dark Horse and their Star Wars comics. Initial thought is I can not imagine Marvel Comics not pulling Star Wars back into its stable.

Edit....wonder if the mighty Joss has any interest or ideas for Star Wars stuff.....
  5. Wonderful to have new VB back...even if it is just one episode. I absolutely love that the characters evolve and change each season, and this 'special' really shows how Dean has evolved over time. A whopper is dropped on him at the end, and how it plays out probably is a big part of the new season (speculation mine).

Fantastic to get a reference to the California Raisins AND Rosie Grier in an animated show - Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick really get these characters and it shows in their writing.

And how disturbing is the phrase 'pleaseure toast' to you? ick ick ick!

Plus they spent some cash to make a custom one-time-only Halloween intro for the show. How awesome was that!

Yup...that is how I would put it.

Awesome work - thank you for your top-notch work over the years.

As an aside, I totally gasped when I saw my main character (Doomsday Chicken) dancing in the video in Pocket D. I can not thank you enough for helping preserve him like this.
  8. Thank you for everything you did for this wonderful game.

Personally, I thought it was awesome when my base defenses attacked me! Had a lot of fun playing around in my base when that bug hit.
  9. Purchased and downloaded it today - will be logging into it after my exam on Tuesday.

Any info / advice I should know before I start playing?

  11. Awesome - keep up the great work, Tony!
  12. Looks good.

Word on the street is that Dr. Strange will have a part in this flick....
  13. Love him or hate him, Rich Johnston is a big name in the comic news/spoiler industry. Extremely happy to see his website spreading the word about saving CoH.

I imagine we can help him out by purchasing copies of his new BleedingCool comic magazine?

***Apologies if this is posted somewhere else - I poked around but did not see anything.
  14. The Superman "power of forgetfullness" sketch I saw was awesome - looking forward to the entire show.

Having been unfortunate enough to have been laid-off, I can tell you that if I chose to accept the severance package that was offered to me I had to sign a very thick and comprehensive legal document. That document prevented me from doing anything out of line against my old company as I was looking to get another job in the same field.

Long story short, if the Paragon folks were offered a severance package, they are a TON of things that they can not do or say. Unless they go rogue....

  18. I will be at this year's convention, staying in mid-town. If anyone else is around and wants to get together for a drink let me know. Would love to get together and rant/discuss the game.

  19. Where the **** am I going to post about The Venture Bros. this fall?????
  20. I always looked forward to reading your posts about the new badges in each build.

I enjoyed teaming with you much, much more that that. Thank you for everything you did to keep Triumph the home for my main toons.
  21. wow...just thinking of this chokes me up more than I expected...Doomsday Chicken feels like an extension of me...not being able to log in any time and play him just seems...wrong.

Part of me wants to log him out at the top of Grandville...part of me wants to be with as many folks as possible in Atlas...part wants to put him in the Shard on top of an explore badge...

... I need to think this over some more...
  22. I had the good fortune of speaking to you once in Boston and once in New York City (in that cool underground nightclub where the corporate NYCC party was held).

Thank you for everything that you did to shape CoH over the years. I felt lucky to be part of such a wonderful community that played such a kick-@55 game.
  23. This was my first MMO - incredible to believe how much time has passed since I subscribed to the game in late 2004. Lots of great memories.

Including the CoH meet-n-greet at Jillians in Boston. What a fantastic night. Highlight for me was meeting and speaking with you, Posi.

    Thank you for everything.
