What do you like about the Current CoH PvP Experience

To continue the discourse surrounding the current state of PvP:

Let's make this post with the knowledge that a portion of the Community prefers previous incarnations of the CoH PvP systems (i.e. pre i13). I'd like for everyone to take a moment and put that aside, for now.

What aspects PvP currently implemented in CoH do you like? If the answer is nothing, then simply state "nothing".

The purpose of this exercise is to hone down on what is positively received in the current state of PvP, since the aspects of what was attractive about the way things used to be are well documented.

To restate what I said previously: If you don't think these threads will accomplish anything, I respect that. I simply ask that you show the courtesy to not contribute to this conversation in a negative way.

Thanks!

You are move fast, vroom, vroom; no beep, beep. BOOOOM!

In the Arena with TS disabled, of course. Speed. That's pretty much it, for me, personally.

Nothing.

I like that you can turn off TS and HD in the arena and you can pick maps.

when i have pvp i usually enjoy the arena with travel suppression off, heal decay off, diminishing returns off, and basically all the negative things in normal pvp zones turned off

Note: I am a Role Player, not a PvPer.

I like that it exists, so we have the option if we want it. I've seen it used in RP before, though these days AE usually provides a better option.

I also like the arena, again for RP. We've used it for a quick setting that's going to be free of problems (again, AE can also do this these days, but has different maps), and for small fights that are "too close to judge" in RP, to give an element of chance to who would win.

As to the current rules system, I'm afraid I have to say "Nothing". But that Nothing is better than nothing at all.

I like the idea behind DR and how it could potentially help balance things. The actual implementation, not so much.

There are some things I like about the current PvP implementation, though I need to qualify that statement by saying there are only parts of those things that I like, not necessarily the entire mechanic as a whole.

I like PvP IOs though their current drop mechanism severely diminishes their usefulness as a tangible PvP reward. I like that epic and patron shields give protection against everything as it makes the choice more about what "flavor" powers you can take instead of what damage types your shield protects against. I like that damage is based on activation time except how that change screwed over AoEs and little was done in regard to higher-tier powers doing more damage as they're supposed to (compare Ice Blast and Bitter Ice Blast for an example of this). I like the "buff" period before arena matches (though I'm aware it removes some of the skill of having to buff teams on the run as the match starts).

EDIT: Oh yeah, I also like the ability to turn off some of the changes within the arena interface, and I like selectable maps.

i like all the options in the arena. a no DR/no Resists option would be nice though.

Speed.... and..... speed.... but that was here before i13

Although i did a melee tourney once after i13 that had no travel powers and travel suppression was on. watching 15 melee crawl to each was pretty funny stuff.

I guess the option to handicap players in certain ways is a good idea depending on what your doing.

While many of the changes made with issue 13 and some since have been perceived as poor, there are a few good things that are currently implemented.

1. Elusivity: Most defense builds were destroyed in pre-i13 PvP. When Elusivity was at 30% it was too powerful, but at 10% it isn't quite enough. A 20% middle ground would be a great step. I did an analysis on this a while back, it can be found here. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=196688

2. Taunt: adding -75% range to taunt was a good change, it added more usefulness to tanks/brutes/scrappers. Last I tested, the -range effect stacked from the same caster. Not sure if it's intended or not, but it seems somewhat broken. In addition, last time I tested this, base taunt duration was not affected by taunt resistance; only the additional duration granted from enhancements was affected. Fix these 2 bugs and it's a great addition to pvp.

3. Defensive toggles not dropping while being held/mezzed was a good change.

4. Pretty much everything macskull said in his previous post.

5. As fiery enforcer said DR has its good points for balance, such as defense vs. to-hit, and how debuffs are applied before DR so that some of the more powerful ones don't completely neuter you (rad comes to mind). In the current system, DR is a necessity (because of other implementations like global resists). With some tweaking it could be successfully applied to a pre-i13 system, or a few adjustments to the curves could be a boon to the current one.

Hmmm,
I Still like what I13 didn't totally destroy: fast pacing combat when TS doesn't come to ruin everything (for ex).

I will not repeat what others perfectly said but, please, listen to these guys (Macskull, Luxuns, Fiery Enforcer, Mr Liberty, etc). I don't know them but they know what they're talking about. And i think a big part of the silent majority is agree with this.

The way mezzing currently works, though it needs HUGE tweaks to get it exactly right. There HAS to be a middle ground between the current system and the old "come with a tray of bfs if more than one dom or controller is on the other side, or you lose" system of pre-I13.

Other than that . . . nothing.

I would say nothing, but we got the option to turn off Heal decay and travel suppression in arena. It would be nice if you could just have a i12 option all together but at least arena didn't totally die since they added that, it's just on life support atm.

PvE Badger that dabbled in PvP. In it's current state, there is nothing in zone PvP that I like.

You should all like the fact that you are still liked enough that you still have a red name asking questions. The base building community has none!! You should like that they care enough about all of you AND your part of the game you frequent enough, they ENTERTAIN you by asking you questions. We Base builders don't get that luxury.

So Be happy in the fact that there willing to listen to you, and MAYBE even change something for the better. Most base builders have seen the light the light at the end of the tunnel, Most don't fear it anymore.

You PVPers may still have hope. There may yet one day be a patch in your future. As for the Base Community, we have seen our usefulness weakened by vet and temp powers to the point of a base being only useful for storage locker.

Work with your red name. Use him/her well. And hopefully PVP can avoid being a side note in this game, like the bases.

I like that there is still an interest in PVP. Why do I get the feeling that these threads purpose is to mold public opinion?

I've replied to something like this before at the NY M&G the base building community was mentioned by the dev team several times. Also please do remember they destroyed base raiding so you could stack crap.

I like the temp powers you can get from the zone mini-games and the arena vendor.

I like the options to select maps and play conditions (but wish there were more).

I like that you can get the arena interface anywhere by using a slash command.

*Note that I didn't actually say PvPing. I used to like doing that in arenas and in zones. I don't anymore.

I like...

...the Arena and the options it has available to it.
...the speed of PvP (without Travel Suppression).
...There being PvE objectives that lure me into PvP zones (even if they could use some tweaking).
...PvP IOs (and wish the drop rate were looked at / there was any additional PvP-related way to get them, such as rewards in Siren's Call).

Speaking as someone who has been building bases since I6 and has logged hundreds of hours in the editor, I remember when bases had a feature we no longer do: Raiding. We have an entire subset of items that we can't use right now (and many others that are moot) because a form of PvP was pulled outright from the game either because of or timed along with the ability to intersect items.

A big portion of what bases were initially intended for might hinge on PvP finally getting some love. And PvPers potentially had a fun activity removed so we can do what we currently do.

I know you want base love. I do too, desperately... But keep in mind that in some very important respects PvP and Bases are intertwined.

And how long ago was the meet and greet? Nothing ever got posted in the base forums if it was recent.

This isn't about bases anyway. This is about something you have We Base builders wish we had. A red name that actually wishes to help. Someone who has a voice in what gets put in the game in the future. Bases don't have that, and I am glad you do. At least they aren't ignoring ANOTHER community that need to be addressed. I am actually a bit jealous to tell you the truth.

PVP DOES NOT have a red name. When a developer who actually has access to code and can actually go in a fix anything chimes into these Community threads, then you can talk.

What pvp has is a person like Ocho, Nieve, Ex_Libres, etc ad naseum. Folks who are nice at gathering what the current community thinks. But that's about it.

I understand your frustration. I have it too. I have seen bases become nothing more than a storage locker with benefits because of temp powers and pack powers. I wish there was a raiding option, one that would work in unison with the Base Building community. That would bring the attention to the bases that it needs. It would make bases something more than its current "storage locker" status.

As it stands, Their can be no inter community co-operation between bases and the PVP community for a simple reason. We have no red named individual to be our voice. Your community has something to work with. Work with him to create a Pvp that satisfies the majority of you. If you don't want to, send him to the Base Building forums, We could use him down here.
