Do you get your costume right the first time?
I have exactly 1 character in my entire stable that I 'got right' out of the gate.
Barbarian Nerd, my fire/axe tank who emerged from the Ren Faire to trod the jeweled streets of Paragon City beneath his Chuck Taylor-clad feet, emerged full blown from the character creator. He's level 42 now and has plenty of costume slots to mess with, but I've never found an improvement on his original look, and I've never tweaked it even slightly, other than swapping his legacy axe for a color tintable version when they added weapon customization.
Everyone else gets extensive fiddling once I start playing and have to stare at them for hours at a time.
Thank god for more vet costume tokens than I can ever use!

I've had maybe 1 or 2 characters that I got right on the first try. Sometimes I feel a bit of regret that I didn't keep my first heroes first costume. It was godawful, but it was the first!
Ugh..not me!
I've had to have help in the past to get that costume 'just right'. I'll procrastinate in the costume creator.....just trying on different costumes on the new toon.
I've also recycled costumes that I liked on a toon I deleted because the character didn't work out in RP. Also have a couple of costumes left over from a couple of Vexxxa's TF runs, that I saved because I liked their look.

Not for me either. It's a labor o' love/hate durin' the journey to fifty. It might take longer than that, but I've usually got a solid direction I want to take it in by that point.

Not usually. There's generally a period of refinement. I think I've redone the Captain Chroma costume at least five or six times as I gradually get more toggles and mess with ways to make them brighter.
I wish.
Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.
Almost everyone changes, if nothing else to get an aura at 30th level. A few have had tweaks as early as 3rd level, a very few never get changed except for an aura or adding a cape. Most get major refits throughout their lives.
Golden Avariel has gone through DRASTIC changes from my first tentative steps into Atlas Park and now. She looks nothing like she did back then (when I didn't know you could turn off the two-color lock :P).
Sometimes. Sometimes not. It all depends on how much attention I was paying.
My first main character, War Crow, kept his same costume for months. I only changed it for in character reasons.
Second main was female, Nitoichi. She started out in what I thought was a great costume, dress and knee boots. Took me about a week to switch her into the leotard and thigh boots which is still considered her signature costume.
Now she has a Praetorian twin and I could say I got her costume right first time, but I actually created about three placeholder copies of her before the live one and each had slightly different costumes.
These days, I'm influenced in costume construction by the outfits I have available to dress the 3D (DAZ) models I build of the characters. So I usually have a good idea of the kind of thing I'm aiming at before I start creating the game version. If you like, I do concept art, just like the game designers do. Except they actually have talent and can draw/paint, and I'm just okay at twiddling knobs on 3D figure software.

I usually have my characters' costumes done either right out of the gate or by level 2 or 3 once I can see them in the daylight and make a few tweaks. I'm usually satisfied enough with them that I rarely bother with cape or aura missions because I don't need to tinker further and came up with a costume concept that didn't need a cape/aura back at creation. Likewise with unlocking costume slots.
I seem to be an oddity in this though.
Rarely.

Villains are those who dedicate their lives to causing mayhem. Villians are people from the planet Villia!
Usually as right as is available at the toons creation. Some new costume pieces fit better overall, and they start a switch.
I usually get them 'mostly' right on the first try. On recent toons:
- stone tank - Level 33 now and no changes. Particularly happy with the powers (grey crystal for stone/stone).
- electric controller - Decided within 10 levels that I hated his eye aura and the proportions of his nose.
- electric tank - Smacked myself by level 15 for not getting the rocket boots. No changes between level 15 and 49.
On my main character, created in May of 2005, the only changes to his original costume were to switch the primary and secondary colors and to give him a custom sword when those were introduced.
I frequently come up with an entire new costume idea for existing toons. If I could, I would pay for extra costume slots.

I often get them "right" for the character as they are at start, but as I play and RP, the character changes. Costumes change to reflect this, and what worked before no longer fits.

Im making another alt, going through the options, nothings really clicking. I have a name picked out already, but obviously dont have a feel for him just yet. I figure I'll fine tune it later, probably after I get a cape. Yes most if not all have capes.
Got me wondering, I rarely get the costume right on the first try, once I enter Atlas Park, its only after maybe 10 or 20 levels that I finally decide to fix their costumes to more my liking. Maybe its to see if they will actually last or end up deleted. How many people get their characters "look" just right from the get go? |

The longer it takes me to get a second costume slot, the more attached I am to the first costume. So my first two toons, slooooowly leveled back when I didn't know how to play the game *and* the leveling curve was harder, had costumes that ended up very firmly stuck in my head. Filling the subsequent costume slots was very difficult, because I couldn't imagine them ever looking any different.
Everybody else got tweaks, or wholesale makeovers. More often just tweaks; I spend a lot of time fiddling with the costume when I first make it.
Almost always. I spend so much time on my costumes that they almost never leave the creator until I like them. The first costume almost never changes, but when I can make a second one I try to do a different style.
MWa ha ha ha ha
no, i dont. in fact my main, rian is over 6 years old and has probably had his costume changed in some form over a hundred times. some times a new costume hits, some times i just change my mind, some times i decide to go just a shade lighter or darker, but no, i live in icon/facemaker. usually if i haven't changed a character's look, its because i havent thought enough about that character.
I've found that the quality of my costumes seems to depend on how long I've had the look in mind. A character concept I come up with in five minutes is going to look a lot worse than one I've had in mind for a while. My favorite example of this effect is my KM/SR scrapper, Kronaros, whose look I've had in mind for EIGHT YEARS (he's a pre-CoH creation), and I waited until GR gave me all the costume pieces to pull off the look I had in mind.
Maybe one in three i get right.
Granted i spend alot of time in icon, so making one cossie can take me a few hours
Sometimes it feels just perfect, other times i have to go back and touch it up some, often some little detail thats not just right. And changing that little detail can sometimes result that i redo the whole thing.
I get the first costume "too right". They don't enter the tutorial until I like their look. The problem comes when I unlock another costume slot and can't come up with something. Sometimes, I'll make a good looking costume but it just doesn't fit the feel of the character.
They're usually "right" until I get new costume pieces that they need.

Almost always. If I can't get the costume "right" for the concept in my head, I often can't roll the chararcter at all!
Now, the costume may change and evolve, and I certainly change the look a bit from costume to costume, but I have to have the basic costume "down pat" before I ever let them step into Galaxy City!
