Do you get your costume right the first time?

On my new controller, I was trying for something kinda techy, and maybe a little bit anime influenced. But once in game, te overall effect is she looks like a soccer player lol.

Oh well, people say she kicks @$$ so maybe it fits. I think for her second costume, I'm gonna deliberately go for a soccer style.

See? Sometimes a character will just sort of find their own style! Now if only there was a sports booster pack with a soccer ball power...

Isn't the lowbie death run through Steel Canyon a standard part of the character creation process? It's the part after you choose a name.

It usually ends with me begging my wife to port me over to Icon...

If you wanted to, you could walk all the way from Atlas to Croatoa and then Steel to unlock the extra costume slot and customize it without dying. It's very easy.

But the closest tailors to Atlas are in the RWZ. One zone over, you never leave the base, you are completely safe.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Also just using the porter to go to Pocket D, if you have the Good vs. Evil pack.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Some of mine have taken quite a lot of tinkering to reach a point I'm happy with...

Mist in Moonlight, my "human"-form Peacebringer (Winged, clawed, pointy-earred Elysion bird-things tend to get a little ticked off when people call them human. Especially after they've gone all mix-it-up with an alien energy-being. ), went through more hair-dos than I care to count before I settled on the "Bart Simpson"-style spikey hair he has now. I've done almost as much reworking on Lan, my Dark Archer; mostly chalked up to to playing around with his power colors. Pally, my main, has had a lot more costume redesigns over the course of his life than most of the others. Though he's pretty much settled now, it took some time (and a lot of questionable fashion choices o_0) to get five outfits that really suited him.

Others toons, like Suzume and Ty'ree, I got the proper look for right off the bat. I never had to do a lot of fussing around with them.

Most seem to fall somewhere in the middle. I might have to rework a costume a couple of times, or fine-tune the colors of their powers or auras once or twice before I get them exactly right, but they don't take the kind of intense, "Oh, goodie. Here we are. Back at the tailor. Again." process Lan or Mist did.

I thought there was a level limit to entering the RWZ ... Thanks for feeding this costume changing junkie.

That's what I get for my second and third forum post in almost 6 years ...

My one friend often laughs at me because the majority of my characters only have one costume slot.

For me to play a character the Name, AT/Powersets and Costume all must work for me just to create a character. After that, I almost never have to go and fix a costume.

I mess with my costume more than anything when creating my characters. so I usually get it right the first time.

I get it right the first time. In fact with my main Nylonus it wasn't untill the late 30s when the Trainers started saying things like: "People are tired of seeing you on TV in the same clothes all the time Nylonus. Why don't you go check out Icon?" That I finally went and ran my level 20 costume slot mission.

I rarely get a character's look perfect at creation. Most often I will get the basic theme correct but then inspiration strikes while playing that results in an "evolution" of the hero's appearance. My second attempt is often way better than the initial costume.

Interesting...

I must not be much of a fashion horse

I always start with a name and a backstory for the toon (however feeble
it might be), and then I make their costume.

They don't get into the tutorial until I'm satisfied with their look, so
they're always "right" from the get-go (with only one exception).

In most cases, I never even bother getting the additional costume slots,
and for the toons where I did, it was typcially just to make a Christmas
outfit for them.

The one exception is a character which is currently mothballed because
we can't make a short, dumpy, overweight toon in the costume creator.

When we can, I'll revisit her - not until.

But other than that specific toon, all of mine don't leave the creation page
until I'm pleased with their look (and yes, sometimes that takes awhile).

I'm colorblind, so no.

The only one I've kept the same costume on for most of the time is the Defender in my signature. And even she got an emergency trip to Icon after someone asked "Why is your hair green?". It was supposed to be blond.

Same here.

I spend a great deal of time in the CC when I'm making a character. Invariably, something will be wrong in a costume when I've clicked 'Enter Paragon/Rogue Isles/Praetoria and forgot to save the costume... -.-

They changed that a few Issues ago. Hazard Zone level restrictions have been lifted. Only the zone that require an unlock still have the level restrictions, like Ouroboros and Cimerora.

Edit: And for those that are having problems with their costumes or are looking for suggestions, might I recommend the The Costume (Re-)Design Thread.

Since we couldn't change our costumes in the early days, I made sure to get my costumes the way I wanted them in the first time. Most of my oldest characters still have their original costumes (outside of some forced tweaks, such as with the skirts). These days I'm not so careful about it though.

Not counting any costume pieces I unlock, or get as recipes (or acquire from new boosters), I typically stick with my first costume choice as the first slot's outfit (I might alter an aura at 30, if there's something else I'd prefer).

If I'm looking for a different style entirely, then I'll use that in another costume slot. >_>

Lol, I only have one character I got right from the get go, and only on his first slot. His hair IS green, and he is a Defender. He is my first character on this account, and I had a detailed backstory and visual design worked out, that didn't work once I entered the character creator lol. The only time I have changed his original outfit is when I got access to capes. I haven't touched it since, not even to get an aura.

As a matter of fact I almost never have an aura on the first slot, because sometimes my computer has issues with them (in large battles) so I switch to my first slot which is less graphic intensive.

My other toons have required trial and error, and only one other has stayed even remotely like the original, as I start developing the character attitude while playing them and feeling out there particular dynamic between my play style with their powersets and between the original look. They evolve slowly over time.

I am just glad the character creator is so expansive, because it has allowed me to maintain my character appearances after i've gotten them right, because I have NEVER ran into a look alike for any of my characters. (Unless I made it cookie cutter, which doesn't count. Example: Longbow theme or some such)

Oo, good question. I'll enjoy answering this one.

Well, let's see... they say pictures are worth a thousand words, maybe I can make some comparisons to my characters as I created them at release.

Jade Dragon - At release Today

The primary problem with JD is that I was unable to get his cape or aura from level 1. But his costume has remained unchanged, except for changes to his symbol. It's supposed to be a dragon's head, but I finally settled on the coiled serpent. I also notice I changed the color of his shirt from that bright lime green, that must have been pretty early on.

Blue Diamond - At release

BD's costume has remained unchanged. It's a pretty classic Golden Age costume, really, and I think it works perfectly for him. His "evil" variation wears a leather jacket over the t-shirt, but as with JD, his symbol is really the focal point of his costume, and this time I was able to get it perfect.

Genie Gold - At release Without wings With wings (to left)

Okay, big changes here. The first and main change was the addition of the Chinese pants and vest top, which allowed me to finally get the "genie" look right. The third picture shows her after I added wings, but also, it shows the final version of her symbol. While I had always used the "atom", I had at first tried to make it solid yellow, to represent a cloud. Finally, though, I abandoned that idea and went back to the atom symbol, as it was a closer representation of her power over matter. I made the atom orange, on a yellow background, which I think made it stand out better.

If you're noticing that GG and the dog in the third pic have a similar color scheme, you're right. (You might also have noticed they have the same symbol) The dog was actually the original concept for the character, but dog heads weren't available at release. Thus, GG was created as a human version of the concept. When the dog features were added with CoV, I finally was able to create my original dog concept. Both are shapechangers, but I chose different ways to implement that power. GG is an Illusion/Rad Controller, she uses her powers to reshape the air around her. Element Dog is currently implemented as a Kheldian, although I've also played him as a Stone Armor Brute.

Bloodwolf - At release

He hasn't changed. He's just a Natural skill-based Scrapper with a straightforward camoflage costume for blending into the shadows. He has no symbol, as he leaves his mark behind on the wall as a warning.

Sandy - Concept sketch At release After scale sliders After aura Piston Boots New costumes

Sandy's probably the character I've changed the most. She was originally created for a fanfiction based on another game. (For which I drew the first picture) From the beginning, her concept has been a mix of human and machine, without really a clear dividing line between the two. I wanted to see if I could capture her look in the game, though, and there were three things that I think really were central; 1) the green gem set into her chest, 2) the glowing eyes, 3) the larger calves and forearms that emphasise that those parts are machine.

The main disappointment I had with the original attempt was that I couldn't make her a "teenager", as despite being small, she just looked like a small adult. I was also stuck with the glowing eyes face, since there were no auras at the time. You may also note my first choice of color was a darker tan than what I finally settled on. She was supposed to be sort of the color of clay or sand, and I finally decided the yellower color was closer. I also could not give her wings at the time, but in retrospect I've decided that she didn't really need them.

When the scale sliders came out was when I finally got Sandy to where I wanted her. With the auras I was finally able to give her glowing eyes with the face that I preferred for her, and I eventually added the Piston Boots because they both gave her a great graphic for her jumping ability, and they "rounded off" the original boot style I had used. The final picture I have is of an alternate costume for her, going back to the concept sketch, I decided that her stomach is mechanical, like in the drawing, and she covers it up with the one piece bathing suit outfit she normally uses. My idea is that she's ashamed of it, she thinks it makes her look ugly, but as she's become more comfortable with her looks she's allowed herself to expose more and more of the area.

I honestly couldn't really get the mix of machine and flesh just right, as I said, the game makes you pretty much set the dividing line at the waist, between the chest and legs. But I think I hinted at mechanical parts using the first out fit (which uses the Clockwork yop under the shirt) and a mix, like the machinery has grown into her stomach, with the second.

If I don't get it right the first time, it usually never makes it to Outbreak.

I subscribe to the 'iconic costume' philosophy: the costume you see on the character is going to be the costume that's always seen in any comic book he/she appears in. Heck, I rarely use the other costume slots because of this.

I have never straightup changed a costume except for once; the most I usually do is minor tweakage (iMaid, frex, got the Cyborg shoulderpads once they came out, and they really made the character).

Shadowhex: Dark Control/Dark Affinity

I think I've had a grand total of two characters that have remained unchanged and will continue to do so (capes dont count). Alpha completely defies any attempts at changing his main costume. I dunno what it is. Possibly the fact he looks small and spindly and yet, somehow, still a little dangerous. And thats only accentuated by the bots.
The other is my Peacebringer, Luminescent Spark. Sparkys looks is the only spandex costume I have ever made that clicked instantly. Again, the cape didnt count and, while I'll give her an armoured variant in the future, it won't replace the default costume that is so very much 'her'.

I was wrong for this character. I added goggles to his forehead. I don't believe they were out when I made the toon, and I changed his hair style to a more updated version of the same. Other than that, the first slot hasn't changed since making him. The other four however have holes burnt in their files from rewriting them so often lol
