The Farmers Manifesto

Another one got caught today, it's all over the forums. "Teenagers Account Banned Today in Farming Exploit Scandal", "Farmer banned after exploit Tampering"...

Damn Farmer. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the Farmer? Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a Framer, enter my world...

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms. Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a bug. Wait a second, this is cool...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

You bet your *** we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food on MMOs when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the bugs and the glitches, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing that could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a farmer, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

I remember when I first started playing, I had no clue how I was supposed to slot things (though 6 slotting hasten was the norm then too). And abbreviations, especially in this game, can get quite confusing. FS could mean fulcrum shift, foot stomp, fire sword, fire shield, focused senses, ect. And unless someone told you, would you know where to go for a cape, either side? Insp is sort of a given, though if you only called it an inspiration would you know what insp meant? TF, again, abbreviation.

There are noobs out there, but we were all newbs at one point or another.

/gignore @username is the best feature of this game. It's also probably the least used feature.

Till then Im really thankful they got around to hitting them hard with the nerf stick. Even better if they do the proposed idea of removing exp completly from AE in i17 like has been circulating in rumors for the past week or so.

The amount of doom comments in game is kind of comical now 'oh noes AE nerfed how canz we lvl now?' amidst the collection of high level noobs finally having to learn what slotting is to survive. Lets hope they finally venture out of the dark depths of AE into the actual game before it was a low level farmers paradise

(yes i do know people will probably still go back to BM and freak farms etc, but at least the level 1s will have a harder time now and might actually have to play the game to get past level 1)
Well since it's obvious you think AE is the root of all evil in the CoH universe why not just have the whole system removed? That'll really make the AE farmers rue the day they dare attempted to earn XP thru a system created by the game developers! What unmitigated GALL those farmers have! How DARE they?!?!?!

Its specifically the buff-only situation that made the confused code only a partial solution at best. And there were other, AI-related issues with it.

About the MA ally nerf...that's a bit much, can't you guys put a restriction on the number of allies before rewards get diminished? 3 seems to be a fair number.

That's really lovely and well written, but more than a bit one sided.

An exploit using/abusing farmer is someone who may explore and search for a rare and precous thing, like a person walking along a hard to access stretch of sea shore. And they may find the occasional sea shell of rare beauty.

But their first thought isn't to put it on display for all to see, or to leave it where it is for others to joyfully discover as they have. No. They smash it with a rock, string the bits onto a necklace, and sell it for a quick profit.

I'll find my heroes elsewhere, thanks. And I'm glad this change has gone in. It's annoying to me, but I think it was needed to keep things fair. The sea shell's gone, time to wander on.

Rewards in Mission Architect missions that contain more than one allied critters will give progressively lower rewards for each additional allied critter in the mission.
And you just inadvertently killed a bunch of legit missions with this. Does this XP decrease apply just from having the critter inside the mission or does it apply when you rescue the ally? Now people are going to be ******** even more if you include an optional ally, even if it's for story purposes.

The exploit has been fixed. And the peasants rejoice. Until the next exploit comes along.

And the AE has further been irrevocably broken for those few players that are still desperately fighting an uphill battle, and trying to use it as intended.

Here is the fix to all the AE farming: Any player who publishes a farm is banned from publishing or playing missions in AE. Done. You can't play nice, you don't play. Stop throwing in ham-handed fixes and driving away the few actual authors and players that are left in AE and giving the stubborn hold-outs even less of a reason to bother.

It's a spoof of a famous manifesto, for the enjoyment of us nerds.

Devs, stop wasting time and resources on AE. Why are we rewarding people for running player created content when we should be rewarding the creators of said content?

Now, that's actually a good point I've never thought of before. Given all the problems with AE, why aren't we upping the rewards to the writers of good arcs? As the rewards for playing the arcs fall to various exploit fixes, anyone that's still writing things that draw people in is likely adding some good content to the game. Maybe it's time to give people a better reason to want a bunch of good reviews.

Let me think. Since it apparently also counts any units placed with the "ally" flag even if they aren't following you, of my arcs:

David and Goliath: There are no actual allies that follow you, but two or three of the missions include allied police officers fighting Trolls, which will cut the exp to probably zero for half the arc.

My Date With a Celebrity: This is a joke arc with very little combat. But the little combat there was will now be zero because there are a lot of allied patrols and "ally" bosses that stand around just so you can hear people talking and be made fun of.

Nocturnal: A new arc I'm working on that has up two two allies that regularly frequent the missions; neither buffs or heals, they're attack/attack. One mission has 3 extra allies who are weak (and none of which buff or heal) who betray you later. That means that mission has 5 allies who will be eating your exp. So the "optional ally who betrays you later" is no longer an option. Also, one mission has an allied boss fight so that they talk to you when you come in. They don't actually contribute much and if they did they'd already be stealing your exp. Now they steal your exp for simply existing.

Please reconsider doing this change so it only applies to units who buff/debuff, and not allied stationary spawns whatsoever. Units who only attack are already stealing your exp. There's no need to also eat up experience based on them simply existing.

I have an arc designed to be soloable by anyone. It has two (optional) allies per mission.

It's a badly-thought out 'fix'. 10+ buffbots is not the same as an one or two allies. This has penalize people who make arcs designed to be solo'd (and there are precious few of them).

Sincerely hope that is clarified/altered asap.

Also, another nod of agreement to "fix the lag on the ITF" from me. It's awful on mission three. Anything over that water gets me a ping of 2000. I'm don't have issues anywhere else. Even Rikti Ship Raids.

The lag in general has been worse recently - especially on the ITF - but across the City/Isles in general. Can almost count on at least one DC per TF over the past fortnight.

Also after reading some of the AE authors posts it is a shame that you guys are the bystanders punished in these AE nerfs. I think I would hate to always have to be editing an arc with every change.

Part of the reward (well in my case the entire reward) is having people actually play something you create. Giving people less and less incentive to play your content is just punishing legitimate authors further.

People who want to actually add content to the game get rewarded by:

- Having to constantly retool their perfectly good arcs every time something breaks.
- Having to constantly retool their perfectly good arcs every time something is changed to fix some exploit.
- A horrible search engine that pretty much ensures most of our arcs will never be played.
- A horrible rating system that gives too much weight to the "opinion" of anyone with three seconds to spare and the desire to click "Play" and click one star, thereby relegating something someone put a lot of effort into back to the depths of said horrible search engine, behind farm after farm and that arc some guy slapped together and got his friend to 5-star.
- A reduced player base for said arcs that a lot of effort is put into because players increasingly have to choose between playing through something new, interesting, and well-written, and getting half-decent rewards.
