Mothership arrival: imminent
I tried that once, hence why I don't have it. Hence why I don't want it Arbitrary rules, etc.
I think it's far more likely that the Mothership comment was just a joking moment of Rikti-speak, and that the actual announcement they have is something like a week of Rikti Invasion. If that's the case, I'd be nervous about actually announcing it too, what with the heightened expectations that have been built up.

Seems to me to be the age-old announcement of an announcement, in this case for the next issue.

Yeah. Paragon Studios has a lot of work ahead of them to get me back into the Optimistic Dev Apologist camp.

Edit: The only way I can see the benefit is if Rikti portal tech does not increase power requirements as you increase mass. So the portal to move the mothership cost just as much as to move a monkey. Then you would save in the long run by performing large troop jumps.

It might take five gold coins per person either way, but not having to pay the ten gold coin start up fee two thousand times makes it cheaper to do it all at once.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
Even if it increases as you increase mass, it could still be more efficient - especially when crossing dimensions - to do one big one rather than many.

That depends on two things
1 - The cost to move an object the size of the monthership between dimensions
2 - The cost of building and maintaining the mothership.
If #1 remains fairly constant, and to be honest there is nothing in game to say it would not, then there will be a point reached where the cost to build the mothership is less than to move the individual components via smaller portals.
However if the in game physics maintain any tie to real world then it will cost more to move an object of greater mass, even through dimensions. Then it is a matter of which way offers the most benefit against the cost.
I still can not see any benefit of bringing a massive space craft for an interdiemtnional war that will never leave the atmosphere and create a major point of failure unless, as noted earlier, it is about the bling bling.
My 2 Cents:
A Rikit Mothership interior map.
*shrugs* Just a guess.
Yeah, it is. Hate to be the one to rain on the parade, but anyone remember the "Star Strider" thing running across all servers last year? The devs giving each server various tasks and things to protect?
Whole lotta setup, and that went nowhere. |
Somehow i apparently missed that completely, as in i don't recall ever hearing it mentioned.
No real loss if nothing ever came of it.

Now that I've had some time to think about it, the Motherships' purpose may just be mobile bases. Sure, it may cost less energy to port the troops between dimensions and no motherships... but then they have to recall them back after a sortie, then transport them back for the next battle, etc etc... unless they expect the troops to fight endlessly without any rest and resupply. Not to mention simply moving from one city to the next.
The motherships would let the Rikti troops to rest as needed in relative safety (well, until they realized that superheroes have a habit of blowing the ships up, anyway), and move easily from battlefield to battlefield, and dropping/retrieving troops as necessary. Given it's apparent armor and shields, it's probably impossible to destroy with conventional weaponry... so minus the whole superhero vulnerability problem, it makes a pretty good base of operations.
Rikti need to sleep too! And I don't think that invading extradimensional aliens get very good hotel rates.
And you know what would also be amazing? If the Rikti had set up shop in the Shadow Shard somewhere and that was part of how they were launching their invasion, the dimensional holes they puncture to reach the Rogue Isles linger and give villains Shadow Shard access! |
Some of this is starting to get near to Issue-levels of content - I'm pretty sure it's just an event of some sort

To be more optimistic...
On the 2008 survey there was a suggestion that there would perhaps be some sort of alien ship that would be part of the post lvl 50 content...
For existing City of Heroes and City of Villains players who have previously reached the level cap of 50, the Expansion will take them into outer space where they can now find challenges that test their powers and skills to the max. On an alien space station that mysteriously appears over Earth, Heroes and Villains will race to unlock the secrets of the place and be the first to reap the rewards that are only available to the best of the best. |
Coincidence? Or not?

In fact, for the people who've been here form the start, what is the largest ever non-Issue patch they've released?
The only ones I can think of are the events and the booster packs.

Long response:
Yep, I can personally attest to the fact that it was a "Whole lotta setup." =P
It was not easy but it was a blast. This year will be our 3rd registering folks for Star Strider Forces. The last two, we took American_Valor up on the Dropship Challenge and defeated:
- 41 Dropships (blueside), Nov 20th 2008
- 28 Dropships (redside), July 17th 2009
- 60 Dropships (blueside), July 18th 2009
We were not the only server. American_Valor spearheaded Liberty server and _Cherry_ organized the Champion server.
That's the beauty in it all - we're creating our own adventure using our favorite characters and the available environment. If it is a scheduled Invasion week, we'll work on breaking our previous records with old and fresh faces. If it is a modified event or entirely new experience then we're getting a headstart on the time-consuming task of assembling an army reserve.

Ahem...
Our Mods have been Rikti-fied in their names.... clue?
The Mothership arrival is imminent?
My wish: Hero One and the other members of Omega Team have, after years of fighting the advance of their condition, finally succumbed to Riktification. The Mothership carrying them has at last reached Earth Prime and is preparing to reintroduce them to their homeworld.
How I would handle it game-wise: Rikti invasions as normal, however if enough players collect in the zone under attack the Mothership moves into view overhead. There is a short countdown (1 minute or so) the last 10 seconds of which flash on the screen like in PvP Zones. When it reaches zero one of the members of Omega Team are teleported down. They are AV level enemies and appear in various locations about the zone. If they can all be killed prior to another timer running out then Hero One (Giant Monster) appears and wreaks havoc.
This pretty much would follow right in line with the recent Halloween Banners and Lord of Winter approach to event management.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
That's like a whole new system of endgame content - so it'd have to be Issue 17 then, as I really don't think there's any way they'd release something that big just as a non-Issue patch.

Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.
