We were universe exploring via portal tech prior to the Rikti War.

In fact, I believe we actually met the Rikti before things happened that drove them into attacking us.

Nope; we had it before we met them. It's teleportation network tech that was taken from the Rikti.

It's how the whole mess started anyway, wasn't it? The Portal Corporation opened a portal to the Rikti world, and eventually they thought we'd make good target practice?

I think it should be emphasized for our newer players that the invasion was nothing remotely like what you see in that screenshot, and the mothership zooming in and out above the zone (above the flight ceiling) didn't even work for everyone, so some people never even saw it.

No. It's explained during the Warzone arcs, but the attack that we initially thought was an unprovoked invasion was actually retaliatory. Nemesis plot. Seriously. I know it's a spoiler, but it's been quite a while since Issue 10 at this point.

I suspect the mothership is around because the Rikti have been busy building a gigantic colony on the moon. The mothership provided a secure, habitable environment during construction.

If you'd been on the moon recently, you'd know that.

There's a mission or two (or an arc of TF) that makes it clear how the war started but I won't spoil it.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

We have teleporters that cover basically our whole planet (or at least all the places we can go to) and can recall people to a hospital so they don't die. Rikti fall in combat all the time. We have portals that open to dozen and dozens of other dimensions and it's trivial for us to just go there by hopping in one. And our hospital technology even works across dimensions, allowing us to be recalled to our home planet if we're near death in some other dimension. And we have portals that just bounce us to other zones for the sake of convenience.

Rikti portal technology seems pretty weak by comparison. Theirs is different, but ours appears to be better.

Our "teleporter" tech is scavenged Rikti tech, so I would not use that as much of an example. Then again I see Teleport and Portal tech as two very different things.

Putting the Rikti behind us in a portal tech scale does them a great injustice. They can setup micro portals at will for troop movement between zones. At best we have to setup massive arrays to do the same thing (Oddly, Vanguard seems to break this rule and may be a sign of portal tech improvement on our side.) While the portal tech may not be more advanced than ours I can not see it as being any less advanced.

Of course...this does not count Magic portals as this is the key point where we shine over the Rikti.

Actually, you know the last mission of the LGTF with the portal? The ceiling of that last room is actually the underside of the crashed mothership. The cave network leads right down to its underside.

The Rikti still have to deal with overcoming the magical barrier walling off their dimension and teleportation tech (zones largely being arbitrary anyway) is not the same as interdimensional travel.

Dr. Todt's theme.

hmmmm another day another information blackout.
i'm thinking this ship arrival isn't so imminent.

... hang on ... checking my dev translator...
ah right. imminent is equivilant to an "almost ready" less than soon.

It's not a bad idea though. Traditionalists for hero side and Restructurists for villain side....

Well, these things take time, don't they? Flying a mothership between dimensions ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations they could fly right through a star, or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end the trip real quick, wouldn't it?

hmmm...what if the magical barrier just seals the Rikti dimension off from earth itself. Magic can be oddly specific like that depending on exactly how the spell was crafted. Perhaps the spell did not seal the Rikti dimension off from say...the MOON!!! The Rikti have built a base on the dark side of the moon and are flying their motherships in from there! So now we will have to defeat the invading forces and take out their Moon base!!

Really. It could happen.

Vanguard is using experimental technology; from Paragonwiki:

Quote:
The war walls that divide up Paragon City employ force fields based on Rikti technology. Vanguard has begun to employ a prototype 'rapid response' portal system designed after Rikti teleporters and many heroes benefit from an emergency teleportation system that sends them directly to a hospital when their life signs reach a critical level. Once they get there, they find themselves rejuvenated by hospital beds that repair damage at a cellular level using a system inspired by the Rikti transmogrification vats.

I keep TweetDeck running on my spare laptop, so I was in Vanguard HQ within 10 minutes of the original tweet getting posted. 40 minutes later, I went away and did something else.

You keep using that word "imminent." I don't think it means what you think it does.

Yeah, it is. Hate to be the one to rain on the parade, but anyone remember the "Star Strider" thing running across all servers last year? The devs giving each server various tasks and things to protect?

Whole lotta setup, and that went nowhere.

For once, I have to agree. When I saw the Twitter message, I expected the speediness similar to the costume code contest. I was at work, but when I kept watching the forums only to see nothing happening, I knew that when they said "imminent", it really meant to say "Soon™".

It probably won't happen until around Feb. 2nd by my calculations Imminent, indeed.*

* I would love to be proven wrong. C'mon devs, make me eat my words

Wow... excellent point. A lot of buzz for another standard invasion event.
