I16 Closed Beta
Now, amid the cries of "Unfair!" and "Why change this now?" I'll explain the purpose of this code change. What we've done is instituted a "Queue" server, so that on really busy weekends, Freedom won't be listed as "unavailable" if it is full, it will simply put you into the "next available slot" queue. Hopefully, this will alleviate some of the issues that crop up from the full server problem.
|
I played on and off most of the weekend and I don't remember any of the servers even going red let alone greying out. Now maybe I was in the middle of gaming during the worst of it but I didn't even see chatter about server outages which in the past I've seen alot of.
Makes me wonder if a queuing system is being implemented for additional reasons. Any chance of going serverless in the near future?
Umber's Hall of Heroes & Villains
Well that's disappointing. Half the "I'm so anxious about issue #!!" was me looking over some of the costume and power changes again and again all while not being able to test it or see it in a dynamic setting.
Gone are the happy days of viewing the character creator on test again and again with great anticipation. ; (
On a somewhat interesting but probably inconsequential note, it seems they've changed the version number scheme.

I just got to know 1 thing. Did they change those Gawd awful assasin's strike animations for MA, DM and EM? If they did this then I am 100% satisfied with issue 16 unless there are some earth shattering nerfs.

yes we could, but being mad is just an after effect of being sad.
First sadness, then madness... |
Yes, I know the server queue change is ultimately meant for all the servers. My point relates to the timing of applying it (for testing or otherwise) to the test server such that it closes access to the character creation process during closed beta unless you are a closed beta tester.
|
Just guessing.
Yeah... because among other things, that:
-rewards desired behavior -promotes an exciting new feature to people who may have neve seen the game before -gets current players excited about the new toys, and starts the buzz. -can be controlled locally for unoreseen circumstances (like bugs that crop up). Marketing, people. It's what gets the game growing. And limiting the initial exposure limits potential negative press about bugs which will be fixed anyway. |
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
Mesuspects I'm not seeing something important here, but how is implementing a queue system that will get used on all of 2 servers out of 15 for about 10 days a year worth doing? O.o
Character references! Artz! Whatnot!
A hundred bucks says they disable the character login screen for i16 closed beta, and just leave it like that for the rest of the closed betas, want to check out the new powers in x set, nope sorry! >_>
|
However, once again, they made a simple failure that has only emotional, though significant, impact on a small part of the player base--only a small part, but the worst part of the player base to provoke: the overly-reactive.
Just a simple announcement like, "Hey, we're trying out a lot of new features and one of them is the log-in system, so this Beta might seem a little more closed than other tests. We're working hard, but have patience; we expect this to go quickly and smoothly," would have gone a very, very long way toward preventing a lot of angst. Probably. We would have seen it as the marketing B.S. it obviously is, but we would be able to point to something definite and be ameliorated. Maybe.
The worst part about it is that they failed to take such a simple, precautionary, pre-emptive step.

I don't think I've seen anywhere where they said there were animation changes for DM and EM. Unless I missed something?

Why do so may people react to something that they cannot have immediately by so vehemently hating those who have it now?
When you see someone with a Ferrari, or a fur coat, or a new cell phone, do you have the same negative reaction? Because, as much as people say, "It's different, it's only a game!", this access to Closed Beta is a Real Life benefit, for the PLAYER, not a benefit for your CoX character.
So really, can everyone just BE MORE PATIENT? Like, NOW??!??!?

I'm pretty sure the code is meant for all servers (he did mention Freedom) so that during heavy play times (2XP, new issue releases) that people logging in to servers will now get placed in an access que to enter.

This is why we test, after all!
hey at least you didn't get negative rep for this, "Your avatar is deeply disturbing."
Ah well, can't please everybody and all that jazz... |
(146.5k is what the limit is supposed to be for uploaded images but they aren't working, that sig image is 14 times that size)
I find your avatar a little disturbing myself, but I'll just adblock it rather than give you negative rep.

Marketing, people. It's what keeps the people that might be on the fence about this game still interested - and not having access to a part of the system they've always had access to during closed betas seems kind of silly to me.

They have to TEST IT.
(edit) Uhoh. It seems I have a red dot.

Hello? This is the PRIMARY effect of the issue. Character creation/appearance has NEVER (After I1 that is), been the primary effect of any issue before, correct me if I am wrong. As quick as this issue has come about, is everyone here incapable of taking a deep breath and not overreacting?
