"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"
Once again, just for clarity's sake.. my point was not about feeling "entitled" as much as it was "feeling like we've contributed to the game". Cripes. 60+ months is a LONG time to be with a game, and I'd like to think that I've done my fair share to help shape the game and how it feels. (tho, you can't blame me for AE! That's NOT my doing!) Again, my point is if you're as long time a vet as I am, then wouldn't you too be a bit spurned if they didn't ask for your feedback on such a HUGE change to the game? (make no mistake.. this is gonna really change the way we play.. and probably thrill role players everywhere on virtue..)

Really? Haven't been keeping up with the forums as much since they switched. I'll hafta seek 'em out.
(It's funny how one-sided some people think everything should be. I write an article about how CoH will be fine and get insulted and told about how great CO will be. I write an article about how CO might give CoH a run for its money and then I get accused of being overly negative about CoH. ) |
And honestly? I give CO about the same chances for success as, say, AoC.
And Zloth, regarding your sig quote... that wasn't just "John" saying that... that was LORD John Whorfin. All others are ordinary Johns. Except for John Emdall and John Parker, who were quite cool.
"Sowhaaat... beeg deal."
"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."
Hear, hear. I just figure I'm on a "do not invite" list. Maybe I shouldn't have called States a ravening lunatic when the whole "let's try to sneak in ED" thing blew up...

I suppose that's why the devs have never officially revealed what their criteria or qualifications are for access. In my case I'm a 63 month vet who sends in bug reports on the live servers all the time, plays well over 20+ hours a week, as well as time on the test servers and when I was in the other closed beta's I was very active in the Issue forums as well as reporting bugs. I can't possibly figure out what then has changed to explain exclusion this time unless they want to circulate the Beta testers every so often so that the same people don't always get in and others have a shot at testing it as well. Though if the whole purpose behind beta testers is to get the best people to accurately collect data and report bugs than why alienate those whom have already proved themselves?
Meh guess one day we'll find out. I can though at least take satisfaction in the fact that peeps like me and Turg are guaranteed a tier 1 spot in the closed beta of Going Rogue so at least that's cool

but for some reason I didn't qualify for a spot in I15 or in this one.

There was no "closed beta" for i15, it was "Cl-Open" they ran it as a closed, but let everyone in, so there really wasn't a closed beta to be invited to.
"Superman died fighting Doomsday because he allowed his toggles to drop, and didn't beat Doomsday before Unstoppable wore off, sad really..."
I still have no idea how they choose who gets in the closed beta for an issue and who doesn't. For instance I was in the closed beta for I12-14 but for some reason I didn't qualify for a spot in I15 or in this one. Why? I've really no idea. None of my gaming habits have changed since I14 but for some reason the Powers that Be didn't think me worthy of closed beta access which now how has me completely confused. I mean what changed between I14 and I15 to warrant not getting an invite?

Everyone was invited to the i15 beta. They stated before it started that participation in that beta would influence future decisions.
I used to joke that the only reason I'd end up in closed beta was because they wanted to figure out how to nerf my powersets without anyone noticing but then they figured out that I adjusted myself and not the build
Seriously though, if you look at what I'd do in test and what I've "/bug"'d, it made no sense to include me in beta.
1) I don't have the time to test everything new 20+ hours a day. For that matter, I don't have time to test for 2+ hours a day.
2) The stuff I'd find would be things like grammar errors, incorrect vector values, missing particles, etc. Hardly the stuff you'd want to know about when you're wondering if a Cold/Cold Defender is going to break the games "balance".
3) I don't play conventionally. Quite frankly, the dev's aren't as concerned that I can solo any archtype. I'm sure they'd have concerns if I could do that in less than 40 gaming days but we all know how much effort goes into preventing that. Really, in this case, I'm wasting their time.
The bottom line is to truly be a contributing beta tester, you pretty much have to be devoted to making the test subject the best it can possibly be. Simply wanting to be in beta is not good enough. You have to be good enough to basically push the subject to its limits to try and break the thing AND you have to be diligent enough to record and report what does break. It's not ONLY about having fun.
To be honest, I didn't care for being in past beta's. It felt like I had to be responsible for something and that I was a disappointment when I didn't break anything. Don't get me wrong, I hit the open beta's as soon as I can so I can "preview" what's coming. However, to be in an actual beta felt more like a job and that is so opposite of why I play games in the first place.
Posting something completely unrelated. Thanks to being linked to BaBs twitter page, I now know he plays Civ4. I just want to make a quick comment, civ4 is evil and fun. I played a game on Noble as the Japanese (Tokugawa) in a Huge map intent on winning by conquering the world in the era of the samurai. I ended up winning in 1990 something by getting to Alpha Centuri first. Ahh, how you can change history.

I almost always win via Space Race. I've won a diplomatic victory once, but completely by accident.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I seem to have the same problem that I do with playing Chess. Strong opening, flounder around in the middle game, and then everything kind of falls apart where I occasionally get lucky.
But a wickedly fun game. I bought the "Complete Edition" off of Steam even though I already owned a copy of it. Haven't even tinkered with the 'expansions' yet.

That was a fun game.
I usually win by a cultural victory, although I've worked with friends to clear the map with military forces. I prefer brains over brawns victory myself (but the thrill of battle is too much fun).
BABs, have you tried Civilization: Revolution on the console? Its a very different experience.

I have him, CoH_OCR, Dark Watcher, BAB, and War Witch on follow.

Did any of the servers lock out this past weekend, outside of the emergency maintenance?
I played on and off most of the weekend and I don't remember any of the servers even going red let alone greying out. Now maybe I was in the middle of gaming during the worst of it but I didn't even see chatter about server outages which in the past I've seen alot of. Makes me wonder if a queuing system is being implemented for additional reasons. Any chance of going serverless in the near future? |
Some have also pointed out there was no free reactivation this DXP weekend, as far as the no-greyed-servers bit goes.

Well, I learned something today. I figured that was how it worked because the zones fail sometimes without the whole server going down, and also the way the markets are per-faction rather than per-server.
|
Each server has it's own cluster of machines.
They then have several other servers : One Wentworths Market, one Black Market, one for global chat, and one for Mission archiect.
Except for the global chat, those extra servers are shared between EU and NA servers.
As I recall, Global Chat for the NA servers, at least, is housed in the Western Sever Farm, so if something takes ALL the western servers down, global NA chat goes down too.

It didn't help that i15's "Clopen Beta" was a massive mess, which I suspect will teach them better than to do those again, honestly I'd prefer they stuck to small-focus Closed Betas (regardless of if I get in or not), because it tends to turn out better issues; I'll just check my email and wait.

yeah, the number of people complaining that it wasn't anywhere near ready for release, WTF are the devs doing putting this out, etc, despite the massive "THIS IS IN A CLOSED BETA STATE" warnings made me come close to attempting to removing my frontal lobe via my belly button...
|
It's for those reasons I think you won't see an 'open' beta like that from the get go for a LONGGGG time if ever again.

I wish I was invited to beta, though. The last one I was in was I11. Come on, you know I'm good for it :P
This is why we can't have nice things
