I only tweaked it's performance. BABs or Keetsie made it pretty -- I think BABs, but it's been a while.

Quick note: Turns out, the office is closed tomorrow, so there is every chance that this account will be closed by the end of the day. So, don't be TOO mad if you try and PM me and get the "PMs are blocked" message.

You guys are the best. Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

Hey, now...did you actually see me use those extra powers? I didn't think so! Cheats, indeed...hrmph!

The Force Bubble power I gave myself when I was attempting to police the wedding event a while back. It failed utterly, but I had to give it a shot. Gun Drone I granted myself to investigate reports of it not working properly in Live settings.

Besides, if I were going to cheat, I'd have just made myself Invincible and Unstoppable.

That's gotta be bitter sweet, yeah your character became an Iconic Symbol in the game, but now you can never play him again.

If you ever find yourself on Victory, send me a PM I'll get you the hook up on TF's and raids
First...your sig is massive and breaks the forums if you have images disabled like I do. Maybe reduce font size?

That said, Castle is a character I created for a Champions game in the late '80s or early '90s. When I had him put into City Of, I gave up the rights to him. He now belongs to NCsoft, which is fine with me. He's part of something a lot bigger than he would be otherwise and that makes me happy. As for not playing him again...it's not like I don't have dozens of other characters! I haven't really been able to 'play' as Castle for over 4 years, so I'm used to that.

Hey, Black Scorpions fix seems to have made that a thing of the past anyway. Fresh eyes on an old problem, and all of that. There'll be a lot more of that sort of thing with him being in charge of the Live Team powers, I believe.

I get so tired of people we've known and grown fond of just disappearing off the face of the earth after they're gone. If you're let go, I can understand that, as I've been laid off and bitter before. But others, they seem to have left of their own volition, which is apparently the case here.

Some of them have said what has essentially amounted to, "I'll still be around." CuppaJo even posted a message or two after she was gone, but she was the only one.

I can understand that they don't want former rednames posting as rednames and confusing people, or *gasp!* someone who used to be a redname doing something to the detriment of the game because they were bitter and the company just didn't know it. And I get it, I really do, that once you're gone, you don't want to answer questions about the game or have to send out a continual stream of, "I don't work there any more, please contact so-en-so." Yes, I know that there may be one or two former rednames still playing the game in relative anonymity.

Still, it's just such a harsh thing, to go from, "I'm part of your gaming lives!" to complete abject silence.

So seriously, talk to Empulse (is he still here?) and tell him to make you a... um... whitename? and stick around. I'd love to team up with you sometime even if you don't have godly dev powers to spawn--or instantly kill!--Hamidon. Set up an "I don't work there any more, please contact so-en-so" keybind. We know what you're like a dev, some of us are genuinely curious what you're like as just a regular schmo like us.
Tony -- company policy is that once someone is no longer with the company, their "red name" status is revoked. Come Friday afternoon, I won't even have access to this account any longer.

I do still have my personal account, and will continue to play. I'll still be in a Supergroup (and who knows, maybe I'll actually get to play when the rest of them are online now! Silly mid-westerners!) Most of all, I'll still be reading the forums, but, when I post, very few people will know it's me. Sadly, there's little that could be done to change that.

If I thought that every player had hostile feelings towards me, I'd never have made this thread!

The internet is a funny thing. A lot of you guys barely know me, and vice versa, but there are many of you I'd consider friends, despite not having the slightest clue of your real names. Even a few who I've had strong disagreements with. For the most part, you guys have been extremely forgiving and easy to work with.

The guys are working on some great new things here, so no real "doom and gloom" should be felt for the future of the game. For my part, it's really just time for something new, you know?

  10. Hey Everyone, I just wanted to send a note out letting you know that my last day working for Paragon Studios is this Friday, December 24.

I’ve been working on City of Heroes in essentially the same role for six years now. It has been a fantastic learning experience and I have become a far better designer as a result of my time here.

I’d especially like to thank all of you City of Heroes fans. I appreciate the passion that you feel for your hobby, even when that passion was, shall we say, directed towards me in a rather negative fashion? I have always tried to keep an open mind and treat your feedback fairly. I’ve loved seeing what you have done with the tools we have provided you with. Some of the MA arcs I’ve seen are brilliant and some of the base layouts are simply amazing. I’ve seen costumes made that, quite frankly, are completely beyond my ability despite having access to the exact same tools. Then, there are the wonderful people I’ve met at Hero-Con and Meet & Greets. It has definitely been my pleasure to work with this community.

In closing, I’d like to thank you all for the good times and putting up with my sometimes surly nature. Going forward, Synapse and Black Scorpion are the ‘go to’ guys whenever you have a powers or entity related question or problem. Feel free to direct your inquiries to them here on the boards and they will do their best to address them. I’ll have PM’s turned on as Castle until 12:00 Pacific, Friday, December 24. Feel free to PM me or post here – I’ll try and answer or comment as best I can!
  11. Exactly what I expected it to be. Fun movie, gorgeous visuals. Overhyped? Certainly, but don't let that deter you. It's a good geek flick.
  12. Looking at the data, all AT's are within a few percentiles of one another for these events. Masterminds are not even the lowest of the ATs.
  13. I'll be honest here: I *love* DPS meters.

I love using them to figure out rotations.
I love using them to predict success/failure for certain encounters (as in: we have the DPS to overcome this situation, so, how did we fail...to the combat logs!)
I even love comparing my DPS against others with similar builds to see if my performance is "on par."

I don't think a DPS-meter is all that useful of a feature for City-Of, however. Your DPS is far more dependent on who you are teamed with and what your specific job is during an encounter than pretty much anything else. In other games, where roles are far more stringent and DPS tolerances are so tight they hum, they might have a place, but not here.

Here, we're Super Powered and it's a pretty good bet that your DPS isn't too low.

Unless you have a MAN-build...but that's your own fault. :P

Really? Working as intended? I really doubt the devs are that numb.
Damage, in itself, is not part of the reward criteria. Otherwise, we'd have situations where Scrapper vs. Defender would almost always yield smaller rewards for the defender.

The guys who built the scoring system have gone to extreme lengths to ensure that everyone who is actively participating gets a fair share of the rewards.

  18. Reposting from I19 Beta threads

    To end the speculation:

The problems Stalkers have at this point are systemic, not specific to them. However, due to their intended playstyle, they are hit by these things in particularly harsh fashion.

    Example "Shared Aggro":
On a team of 8, someone aggros a large spawn of 16 mobs. Approximately half the mobs immediately peel off and attack the aggroers teammates, regardless of LOS or Stealth preventing them from being able to see where those teammates are. For most ATs, this is a minor inconvenience. For Stalkers, it can cost them a substantial amount of their alpha strike damage.

In the past, I've addressed this to a degree by increasing their damage, adding additional critical avenues and even adding a Fear debuff to their Assassin Strike abilities. At this point, they are about as strong as we want to make them, which means any further improvements have to lie in addressing those systemic problems. Frankly, that means it is a LOT more complicated and manpower consuming.

And, that is where it stands.

Rather than further derail this thread, this should be continued over in the Stalker forums.

    CoP reward buff

    I just tested this internally.

Defeating the Aspect and selecting Reward Merits gave me 21 merits, which is what it should be doing, and should have been doing since launch. Repeating the CoP within 24 hours reduces the reward to 10 Merits.

EDIT: As for why we don't put a hard limit on repeatability, such a thing would dramatically reduce the number of potential participants, due to lockout conflicts.
  23. In regards to game systems, backgrounds, etc.

Most players I know go into games with characters fitting the GM's style and tone, if they know it ahead of time.

If John is known for running games in which your characters backstory and motivations will never come into question, we make characters with very little in regard to those things. Instead, we focus on the things that will be focused on by the GM -- tactical combat and/or cooperative storytelling, for instance.

If Jane is known for running games in which the emotional depths of your character will be plumbed and every sentence you wrote in your background can and will have an impact on the characters adventure career, then we spend the time and effort to build well flashed out characters with families, motivations and reasons for doing x instead of y.

Basically, it is centered on this one guy, a normal guy, who is going through his normal day. Except, he wakes up to a strange phone call from someone trying to warn him. Then, crossing the street, he nearly gets run over. Some other weird things happen around him, and eventually, he is able to time travel. He goes into the future where a despotic ruler with a beard has this future nation under his iron grip. The leader mocks and degrades the guy. Soon after, the guy travels back in time in this land and tries to warn the people about this leader who will rise up. While waiting for the leader, the guy becomes more and more crazed and grows a beard to show the people who they have to look out for. Of course, he really is the original leader and he has gone crazy. Also, we learn throughout the story that the earlier near-misses are his future selves trying to prevent the guy from traveling through time.

    So, any ideas?
Sounds similar to By his Bootstraps by Heinlein...or was it All You Zombies -- dang, not sure now.

EDIT: Dangit, people, how am I supposed to show my geek lore skills if you keep scooping me. *shakes fist*

  25. Fiery Embrace adds it's bonus damage to the initial hit damage from burn, but not to the Damage Over Time effect. It also is a separate damage entry in the combat log, rather than being a modifier to pre-existing damage like most buffs.

Think of it as a "proc" rather than a "buff" and it'll probably be more clear in how it works.
