Help Me Remember This Short Story!

Okay, this story I read growing up has recently been rattling around in my brain. I remember being impressed with its use of time travel...

Basically, it is centered on this one guy, a normal guy, who is going through his normal day. Except, he wakes up to a strange phone call from someone trying to warn him. Then, crossing the street, he nearly gets run over. Some other weird things happen around him, and eventually, he is able to time travel. He goes into the future where a despotic ruler with a beard has this future nation under his iron grip. The leader mocks and degrades the guy. Soon after, the guy travels back in time in this land and tries to warn the people about this leader who will rise up. While waiting for the leader, the guy becomes more and more crazed and grows a beard to show the people who they have to look out for. Of course, he really is the original leader and he has gone crazy. Also, we learn throughout the story that the earlier near-misses are his future selves trying to prevent the guy from traveling through time.

So, any ideas?

Sounds really interesting, I tried many variations on Google but couldn't find anything.

Now I'm curious too.

Pretty sure they'd have stolen that to make the one Hulk story line too... o.o

I believe that Svanberg is correct. Fun fact: it was originally published under a pseudonym.

Heinlein later revisited the concept with the short story "All You Zombies," as well. But that was clearly an example of post-Stranger in a Strange Land Heinlein.

Actually, "--All You Zombies--" was written in 1959, while "Stranger in a Strange Land" was published in 1961. Heinlein had apparently plotted out the plot of Stranger (but not written it) 10 years before it was published.

Sounds similar to By his Bootstraps by Heinlein...or was it All You Zombies -- dang, not sure now.

EDIT: Dangit, people, how am I supposed to show my geek lore skills if you keep scooping me. *shakes fist*

EDIT 2: By His Boostraps -- http://www.xs4all.nl/~pot/scifi/byhisbootstraps.pdf

Definitely not By His Bootstraps, there's no crazed despot in that one. Never read the other.

It's not 'All You Zombies', one of the stories responsible for giving Heinlein his reputation for kinkiness.

The main character, a hermaphrodite, is both his own mother and father, as well as the person who introduced them via the magic of time travel.

It actually doesn't really sound like either one.

Although, since I can't currently think of what the story might be, I'll instead plug a, well I guess technically its a comic book, called Meanwhile. It takes the concept to a very interesting place.

I happened to stumble onto that book after being pointed to the authors prior work: Fleep. Its ... unique.

By Your Bootstraps does sound like it may be it, and I did read a lot of Heinlein growing up, but "Diktor" doesn't sound as menacing as I thought the despot was and I thought there were more odd (and subtle) warnings than "Joe."

I also thought the main character had no idea what time travel was until some ways into the story.

The game Infamous has something like that in it's plot line.

The Hulk mini series Future Imperfect.

Hmmmm... seems like the plot has been used a time or two. And of course evil versions of the good guys always have beards. Just ask Spock.

I bet the Praetorian Hamidon has a beard.

My future self has no comment.

I am not 100% convinced it is By His Bootstraps, but will settle on eventually (re)reading(?) it to find out.

I have another time travel short story I need help identifying, but will save that for another day.
