    Last Dance

    Arcanaville,

Thank you so much for . . . well, being you. Your information and insights improved my enjoyment of this game and the Forums. You have generally been the last word in any dispute and the one to provide an authoritative analysis about "how things work." I used your information to make my characters better, and then shared that information with others in my various guides and posts.

This entire community owes you a large debt of gratitude. And I personally thank you.

Also, I'm personally shooting for living well into my 90's, if not 100! And continuing to play MMO's all the way.
As I get older, I see more and more folks in the 70's living happy and sometimes productive lives. Most of our Supreme Court Justices are well over 70.

Besides, as you get older you get to say, "See, I told you so!" more often.

    Wreck It Ralph

I agree -- Wreck-It Ralph is a definite "go see." I'm not a fan of Sarah Silverman, but she was perfectly annoyingly cute in this film.

By the way, I was surprised to see that the voice of the Candy King was done by Alan Tudyk. You may remember him as the pilot from Firefly, or Alpha from Dollhouse. He seems to pop up a lot of different places and has an amazing range as an actor.
  6. The opening scene in X2 is one of the best scenes in any superhero movie. It showed exactly what Nightcrawler could do. And Alan Cummings did a wonderful job . . . but I think he said that he had no interest whatsoever in going back to the role.

X1 and X2 were good, but not great, films. They had some plot holes that were glaring, but had some great characters that were well acted. Many complained that the films messed up the "real" X-Men universe, but the films just need to be looked as as being "inspired by" the comics rather than copies of the comics. However, I was disappointed that Cyclops was not given enough focus, and that Wolverine came across as a lovesick puppy.

My enthusiasm of Bryan Singer as a director was substantially reduced by the travesty that was "Superman Returns," which was filled with horrible choices. Still, going back to the X-Men franchise may have him get his directoral sea-legs back. As long as the reviews are decent, I'll see it.

Also, it made a ****-ton of money. Earning $560 million on a $200 million budget (with a reported $320 million in merch) doesn't make it a loser. Even the worst-performing Pixar movie is a money-printing machine.
I know it made money . . . which is why they made it, of course. But it was the first poorly reviewed Pixar movie. So while it was a commercial success, it was not a critical success while all of the other Pixar movies were loved by critics and audiences alike.

I liked Cars. I actually liked it better than I expected. Cars 2 is the ONLY Pixar movie I have not purchased. It wasn't horrible and was actually somewhat entertaining, but for a Pixar film, it was disappointing. Personally I was not that crazy about Wall-E's heavy handed "message," but the robots were cute. One that I liked a lot but is often forgotten is Ratatouille -- it is nice to see an animated film where the ending is a little bittersweet.

I think that Disney will do a very good job with the Star Wars universe . . . you don't pay 4 Billion for something unless you are going to make good use out of it.

If you look HERE, you'll see Twoey's attacks. He has Entangle (range 60), Thorny Darts (range 80), Fling Thorns (Range 30) and a bite attack (melee, obviously). Strategy is pretty easy . . . Control everything, and let Twoey go to town killing what he can.

If you skip the fighting pool, what sort of defense do you end up with? Does it just not seem to matter with all the strong control tools?
I tend to use stealth and a lot of control mostly. Between Steamy Mist, Combat Jumping and Ice Armor, I can get about 25-30% S/L defense. Plus, I play like a weenie -- staying back out of melee, letting a melee teammate grab aggro and gather up groups before I control them. Solo, I'll let Twoey act as my tank if needed (although he doesn't last long in a tough fight). I don't hesitate to run if I draw too much attention. If I draw some melee attention, Hurricane is WONDERFUL. Overall, playing without capped defense is actually more fun to me -- it is more of a challenge.

I love O2, and do not, even slightly, consider it skippable, unless it's a solo only build. I would lose the Spirit Tree, but, that's back to that pesky theme I'm trying to stick with, so that's not droppable either. I would be completely willing to lose the fighting pool, is it wouldn't hurt survivability, though.
I like O2 Boost both for helping teammates (great for un-stunning in battle) and healing up Twoey. It was easily skippable on my Grav/Storm since Singy can't be healed. Personally, I would choose O2 Boost over the Fighting Pool.

And, as a final thought, I'm loving the last chance for some good old back and forth chance to learn some new tricks, POVs, etc, with one last build. This is part of the game I always loved, and love the input, and the differing viewpoint. Admittedly, controllers are not on of my stronger classes, build-wise, or play-style, either, so the help is quite appreciated.
Controllers have been, by far, my favorite AT. I have around 17 or so at level 50 on two accounts and over many servers, with at least one of every primary. I find them fun because there is such a wide variety of playstyle. Some are melee, some are ranged, and some are close range. Some do great damage, others do almost no damage. Some are good solo, some are best as support. Even the same primary and different secondaries can dramatically change the play of the character -- I have Ill/Rad, Ill/Storm, Ill/TA, Ill/Time all at 50, with an Ill/Kin and a second Ill/Rad not too far behind. Each of them plays differently. I have Plant/Rad, Plant/Kin and Plant/Storm also -- all of them fun for different reasons.

I like Scrappers, Brutes and Tanks, but they are all -- run in, hit stuff in melee. Only minor differences in playstyle. Stalkers are slightly different, but mostly just another variation on the same theme. The Blast sets are mostly the same -- stay back and shoot.

Brad Bird has no problem with Disney. He's been busy doing live action films, which is something that he always wanted to do. The Pixar folks have said that Incredibles is Brad's baby, so it won't go forward until he is ready to do it. Disney/Pixar has made it clear that they are ready to go with Incredibles II when Brad is. (My son works for Disney and keeps track of this stuff.)

Yeah, Cars 2 was the first loser for Pixar . . . it was made because Cars was a massive merchandising hit and Cars 2 kept the flow going even though the film wasn't very good. But don't lose confidence with Pixar under Disney -- think Wall-E and Up. Brave was a beautiful film even if the plot was fairly ordinary, and it was still successful.

@Psy Yes, I did mean that to be a +7.5% recharge, and I quite like the added resistances.

@Local Thanks so much for the catch on the doubling up on teh Zephyr -KB. And I like a lot of your other improvements, too. I agree with ya that Ice APP and SS would be better (I personally dislike flight as a travel a lot) but it's sorta thematic. I'm usually willing to make concessions to theme, since careful slotting and IOing can get ya still quite high end enough for almost any situation anyhow.

Now I just need to get 4 more levels in the time I have left, and make sure I have all the IOs laying about.

    Thanks again!

PS: If anyone else can offer any other suggestions, though, I'll happily still listen to any more input.

PPS: I'm sorta surprised that nobody suggested, or even mentioned the fact that I skipped the pet. It seemed pretty bad to me, in play, but I thought maybe I was just doing something wrong. But, as nobody advocated that I should try to add it back in, should I surmise that it's just that bad a pet?

I completely missed it. Twoey is a decent pet -- not great, but decent. (The name comes from "Little Shop of Horrors" where the carniverous plant was named "Audrey II" but called "Twoey" by the main character. Some folks call it "Chompy.") In my opinion, he is the coolest looking Controller pet in the game. He contributes decent damage. He's not all that durable, but adds some damage and some control. He can be used as a distraction, too. I would compare Twoey to the pet in the Dark Control set. I certainly would recommend taking and slotting up the pet.

Drop O2 Boost or Spirit Tree to fit it in. Both of those powers are "nice to have but skippable." Personally, I don't have the Fighting Pool on any of my Plant Controllers so I don't have a problem fitting in powers.
  11. Personally, I think this will be great for Star Wars fans and the Star Wars universe. Lucas is fine if he simply outlines the story and then lets others do the writing and directing. The Empire Strikes Back! shows how good that combination can be. Going past Episode 6, there are no real limits on where the story can go, and so many ideas have already been expressed in the tons of books based upon the SW universe. I see this as possibly being like the James Bond films . . . a series that just keeps going and going, reinventing itself to adjust to the times. Disney has the ability to keep the IP in all aspects of entertainment - movies, books, comics, theme parks, TV, etc.

In the Orlando Theme Park market, Universal Studios really grabbed some glory from Disney by making the Harry Potter areas in the Islands of Adventure theme park, and a new Harry Potter part is planned for Universal Studios. Disney can now expand the single "Star Tours" ride into an entire section devoted to Star Wars.

I took a quick look at your build and made a few minor changes. You did a few things that I would not do, but I left your power choices alone. I reslotted Freezing Rain with Recharge and procs, so you get more damage and it is up a lot more often. I added 7.5% more Ranged Defense, since Hurricane can keep away melee attacks. I dropped the Zephyr -Knockback in Hover since you already had one in Fly and 8 mag -knockback is no better than 4 mag. I also put a stealth IO into Hover to give you full invisibility when using Hover+Steamy Mist -- which I find very, very useful to get into the best position to use Seeds. Accuracy is useless in Tornado, so I made a small change there.

Personally, I would use the Ice APP over Earth. Ice has better ranged attacks in Ice Blast, Frost Breath and Ice Storm, but still has a S/L defense shield, plus Ice has Hibernate, a great panic button power. I would drop Thunderclap and take Hasten. (Actually, I prefer Super Speed with a */Storm, so I would drop both Hover and Fly. Super Speed is great for Herdicaning and getting in position for best use of cones and Lightning Storm.)

But here is the build I would suggest using your power choices:

It's great being able to play a game with anyone you want.
My first MMO, too. I received the game for Christmas in 2004 but didn't find the forums for a couple of months. Then my wife made a character on my account and we started having to fight over who got to play . . . so she got her own account in March 2005. I have kept both accounts up continually since then.

I have tried a few other MMOs in the last 8 years and none have been as enjoyable for various reasons. In WOW, I quickly could not stand the slow run everywhere, the open-world having to fight for spawns and battles over who got drops. And most of all, most people in other games are jerks. CoH encourages cooperative teaming better than any other game I have seen. PUGs can often be as much or more fun than teaming with a regular group. I also loved the powerful feeling of wiping out huge groups of foes instead of usually having single tough foes that needed certain structured group to defeat. Some other games seem more solo-oriented where you were just "going along for the ride" for the team leader doing his missions -- whereas TFs in CoH were truly for the entire group.

And I was able to get to know a lot of great people in CoH, two of whom I have met in person and whose friendship I value. CoH seemed to appeal to an older demographic, as most of the people I got to know through voice-chat were in the upper-20's to low 50's. A few younger kids and teenagers, but a lot of older, more mature people. (Even the kids seemed more mature except in PvP.)

    Arrow...

Arrow has potential, but I'm afraid it lacks heart and humor. I think superhero shows work best when it plays the stories straight, but the hero fires off a few quips. I like Paul Blackthorne -- I liked him in Dresden Files and it is nice to see him in another series. I thought the set-up was pretty good with several mystery elements.

    Refunds?

I have two usual accounts, and then I had purchased a 3 month pack for my son on his account. I got refunds on all three accounts. One of them seems a little low, but another seemed a little higher than I expected, so overall I'm not complaining.

Uh, it was written in 2007, before all of the Twilight dreck.

Just a little bit out of date. Now, nearly 5 years later, such a list should include Twilight and Marvel Super Heroes/Batman.
  17. I'm waiting for it to come out on DvD so I can see it . . .
  18. I have a LOT of experience with Hibernate, and slotting it for anything other than Recharge is mostly wasted. Yes, you may recover your health and/or endurance a little faster, but those slots can be better used somewhere else. Ice Storm should be slotted for Damage over procs.

You have two slots in Combat Jumping, with one of them being the Karma -Knockback. Why not move a slot to Steamy Mist, slot the Steadfast -Knockback with the +3 Defense and get a 1.5% Recovery bonus for free?

If you look at the percentages and the effect of the Dark Watcher proc, it really isn't worth slotting in Hurricane.
  19. Well, this is the build that I had planned. I haven't come close to actually making it, as I am now up to 43 level 50 characters and most of them do not have "final" IO builds. Still, this build would have Perma levels of Hasten, Mass Confusion, Terrify and Mass Hypnosis, almost perma pet. The Defense is in the 30's for S/L/E, easily buffed by a single Luck. This, of course, is my "money is no object" build.

Actually, Terrify has only a 10% accuracy penalty. Global accuracy should be enough to overcome that. See the entry at City of Data at http://tomax.cohtitan.com/data/power...ontrol.Terrify

Furthermore, if you use Mass Hypnosis before Terrify, then any foes missed by Terrify will stil be sleeping. You can take them out one by one.

But, it is up to you.

Rather than Defense or Recharge, I really wanted this character to have the Control-power to ignore sub-AV/Incarnate threats. I can see that Primal will give me 15 seconds of Awesome Cosmic Power... about once a minute, depending on recharge. However, I'd honestly rather not depend on that, but have Pretty Good Power all the time.
I was trying to give you alternatives because you did not specify to goal of your build, so that kept me from making the suggestions more specific. Personally, I build my Mind/Storm for Recharge, relying upon some Defense and the ToHitDebuff in Hurricane to provide protection. Building for Recharge allows you to be a better Controller overall since your long-recharge powers are up more often. However, truthfully, I never finished my planned IO build.

By building for Recharge, you are likely to be able to control anything lower than a Boss on one shot, and you will be able to control bosses much of the time even in one shot. And you will have a power up for the next group. So, for your stated goals, I would go for Recharge and then throw in as much Defense as you can. Without purple sets, you will run into the limit of 5 sets with 6.25% Recharge pretty quickly.

I genuinely like Leadership, especially for Squishies. Assault gives me an extra 15% Damage and Tactics feeds 12% To Hit - so I don't miss much, and they both protect from some of the odd-ball mez/debuff effects that are prevalent in the endgame. Do I Need them? No.
With most IO builds, you should get lots of Accuracy bonuses. Generally, Tactics is not needed because most powers will be well over the accuracy cap already. If you are going to keep Leadership, I would go with Maneuvers over Tactics. Maneuvers also gives you another place for a Luck of the Gambler Recharge.

I could replace them with Medicine... Get Primal and Hasten... and possibly Profit.

And yet, I really like what the Fire APP offers - a Recovery Power, Click-return from defeat, a decent Resistance toggle, and a good AoE attack.

I see Ice and Stone, as well - they could be useful and their armors are Defense which would stack with Steamy Mist to give half-cap Defense. Frankly, my biggest problems with them are that they're Ugly.

    Silly, I know.
Not silly, as I find the Stone armor quite ugly. I don't mind Ice. But if you want a Defense-based armor that looks better, consider Mace PPP. It is actually the best armor for Controllers because it provides S/L/E Defense, and it doesn't cover up your costume. You get a couple of nice attacks and a pet -- which really helps a Mind Control character. The one thing you miss out on is a self-heal and self-recovery power. Hibernate in both Ice APP and Leviathin PPP gives you a kind of self-heal and self-recovery all in one.

I like Fire APP on some characters -- I have it on several including my overall favorite Ill/Rad controller. I've never been impressed with Consume though. And you don't get a self-heal, which I consider to be more important.

Let's see... Good point about the damage procs in the Confuses. I've swapped those out. Not sure if I can get the Purples before the game collapses, but I'll look into them.

I'm not sure what you mean about 'the Defense' in Steamy Mist. 4 LotG gives great Defense and EndRed, doesn't it? Do you mean you'd expect to see the Steadfast in there?
I should have been more clear. I would replace the End/Rech with a LotG Defense. Then I'd put a Steadfast +3 somewhere in the build (and Steamy Mist is a good choice).

    Quote:
Freezing Rain is frankenslotted for Recharge, the '+slow' is simply frosting.
I have found that Freezing Rain is best slotted for Recharge and procs. 2 Recharge with some buffing works fine, and then the Achilles Heel Resistance Debuff proc allows you and everyone else to do a lot more damage. Then the Posi Blast, Lady Grey and, if you have room, Impeded Swiftness. All together, it really adds up to a LOT of damage. You already have Snow Storm so more slow really isn't needed.

    Quote:
Will of the Controller seems perfectly suited for T-Dom. Proc gives some damage, Recharge and Hold are maximized.
WotC works fine in T-Dom. I was just suggesting other options, since you can put Baz Gaze in T-Dom and then use WotC in a power that would otherwise use a 6.25 Recharge slot.

    Quote:
Posi-Blast does not have enough Accuracy to make Terrify effective, nor does the Purple set (unless I had Several purple sets) which is why I've got it slotted like I do.
With enough Global Accuracy, you shouldn't have to worry about more accuracy. Remember anything over 95% is wasted unless it is a higher level foe or there is some ToHitDebuff. Terrify is your only AoE damage until APP/PPP powers.

    Quote:
If I were to go PPP, I'd say Mu or Soul would be more attractive to me, though I certainly see the point with Leviathan.

It's too bad we won't be seeing Sorcery - that might have been very interesting.

    Be Well!
    Fireheart
For a Mind/Storm who goes for some defense, I would say that Mace is probably my first choice due to the Defensive shield and the pet. I went with Ice only because I did not want to take my character Red side to earn the PPP sets, and I won't have time to get back to that character before the end of the world as we know it.
  22. I was out doing family stuff or I would have been there. Maybe next time, give a little more warning?
  23. OK, I see several things that could substantially improve this build. Most of your power choices are good -- you skipped Telekinesis and Thunderclap, and I agree with those. However, I would drop Assault and Tactics, and add Hasten and something else, possibly Hover if you spend a lot of time fighting from the air. Or you could go with Super Speed for full invisibility.

*/Storm is a very high endurance build, and it is hard to spend the endurance on the fairly small buffs from Assault and Tactics, especially solo. Choosing the Cardiac Alpha can help this a ton.

Your slotting needs some work. You really need to decide whether you want to slot for Recharge or Defense. Recharge is badly needed to get those long-recharing AoE control powers back faster. Or you could go for Ranged Defense, hoping to outlast your foes . . . but it will take longer to kill them. Either one is a viable choice.

The biggest challenge when doing a Recharge build is figuring out how limit your number of sets that provide 6.25% to five. This is where you sometimes need to use purple sets.

The challenge with a Ranged Defense build is your number of slots. Most of the Ranged Defense sets require 6 slots.

Thunderstrike's best use is for a Ranged Defense build, but you need to 6-slot for the best bonus. If you go for Recharge, then choose 5 Decimation in Mez and Lift.

Dominate is needed both for Damage and Hold, because that hold sets Containment. If going for Recharge, the 4 Baz Gaze and cap the last two slots with some Acc and as much damage as you can get. I like an Acc/Dam Hami-O and a common Damage IO.

Confuse: This power has no aggro, so you can stack it without drawing aggro. However, putting a damage IO in it can mess up that "no aggro" aspect. If possible, it would be best to slot this with 5 purple Coercive Persuasion for Recharge, or put a 6th one in there for Ranged Defense. The proc from that set is WONDERFUL in this power, giving you an occasional mini-Mass Confusion.

Mass Confusion: If possible, slot this with 5 Fortunata Hypnosis purple set for Recharge. You can use Call of the Sandman, but that uses one of your valuable 6.25% slots. There aren't many good options for Ranged Defense. If you can't afford the purple Fortunata set, you might want to Frankenslot three Acc/Sleep/Rech. Solo, I use this power a lot. It is great to set Containment for Terrify. It is another power that does not draw aggro, so you can take advantage of that.

Steamy Mist: 4 Luck of the Gambler is OK, but I would probably go with the Defense in there. This is also a good place for a -knockback IO. You could go with two Steadfast -- the -Knockback and the +3 Defense here.

Freezing Rain is the single best power in Storm, but slotting it for Slow is mostly a waste. You want it up as much as possible, and it is a great place for procs. I like to slot 2 Recharge, the Achilles Heal proc, Posi Blast proc, Lady Grey proc and, if you have enough slots, the Impeded Swiftness proc.

Total Dom: 5 Will of the Controller is good, but there are lots of places to slot that set. You'll want the 6th one in there if going for Ranged Defense. You could also use 4 Baz Gaze for Recharge, or 6 Lockdown for Ranged Defense.

Hurricane: I go with 4 Dark Watcher. If you are going with three slots, use Enzyme Hami-Os.

Snow Storm: if you don't use it much, you can probably drop that to one EndRdx slot, especially if you buff the enhancement.

Terrify: Posi-Blast set unless you have the purple set.

Mass Confusion: Again, do not use the damage proc since this power does not draw aggro.

Tornado: Another place for a 6.25% Recharge . . . there are just too many! If you want ranged Defense, go with 6 Expediant or 6 Blood Mandate.

Lightning Storm: The Devastation Chance for Hold is pretty nice in this power. Another place for a Decimation set if you aren't already past the 6.25% limit. For Ranged defense, you can use a Thunderstrike set.

In terms of APP/PPP choices . . . If you want to maximize control, go with Primal. If you want a pet, go with a PPP -- Waterspout and a Corelax pet is pretty nice, or the Defense shield and pet from Mace is pretty good. For Mez protection, you can go with Psi APP, but I prefer a different damage type. Also, remember that Mind/Storm has no self-heal, so Hibernate is a really nice addition. For this reason, I would go with Leviathan with Waterspout, Hibernate and the pet.

The Reeds are a big mystery, so they would be interesting.

Another character who probably has a fun story is Greatjon Umber. Lots of manly men doing manly things. He had two fingers bitten off by a wolf, and then laughed about it. He's big and loud and boisterous. When you have uncles nicknamed "Crowfood" and "Whoresbane," you know there's a pretty good story in the background. It would probably have some barbarian/viking feeling to it.
  25. We still don't know how likely it is that the game might be "saved," but I also wanted to express my appreciation for the many people who:

    (a) Shared their experience and knowledge over the many years of this game through guides and forums -- I learned a lot and was able to use and share that knowledge.

    (b) teamed with me while I tried things out -- I know that may have been frustrating (or quite funny) at times.

    (c) read this guide and made use of some of the information. I have really enjoyed helping folks just as I was helped. A few people have said "hello" in game, and that was really nice.

    (d) If and when the game goes dark, I will definitely be on my Illusion/Rad/Fire character, Area Man on Guardian.
