So what do people think of the Rep Meter?

It really freaked me out more than anything on these boards. I don't know why.

They should eliminate the ability to give negative reputation. It's just another tool to be used to cause difficulties/disagreements, and it is an incentive to trolling.

Heck, get rid of positive reputation; it quickly becomes a joke with 'Rep me' threads, and just encourages attention who.....ahem, gathering fans.

The only problem with the rep meter is that I currently don't have any forum rep. Clearly this is an egregious error and should be fixed immediately.

My main problem with the Rep Meter is that "rep" can basically mean anything. We get users with high rep who get it because they're pretty consistently funny, and other users with high rep who get it because they're number crunchers or constantly answering questions in the Player Questions forum. I'd love to see Rep reworked and broken out into 2 rankings, one that's just kind of an "I give you props" rating, and the other for helpfulness/informativeness.

And now, because I can't resist, a mini-rant about real life rep: something is just wrong with our culture when a vapid, self-centered moron like Paris Hilton is world famous, whereas a man like Norman Borlaug who is credited with saving over a billion lives and should be one of the most famous people in history, is relatively obscure. If it was in my power I'd deduct 1 million rep from Paris and give it to Norman.

Well, from what I've tracked, of my current 646 points of rep, 27 of them were gained over a series of seven posts from Raise the Rep. Those all came within 24 hours of each other, then they stopped (except for the last one that JUST CAME IN). (I still get neutral and/or negative rep points from that thread since that date, but no positive.) The other points stem from a variety of other threads... I neglected to keep track of the negative rep point values, though. Damn - sloppy research on my part.

Of the last 20 I've gotten, 3 are negative, 4 are neutral, and 13 are positive. And that's without turning off the rep meter since we first migrated to the new forums.

PK and I have the same number of bars (and the same title associated with it, so we are presumably in the same bracket). But given PK's rather prolific posting, he's probably accumulated larger amounts of both positive and negative rep, and the balance just happens to be the same.

There's a sociology paper in this, somewhere. Maybe whatshisface who wrote about griefing in PvP could do another article on this.

PS - Interesting. After deleting that post, any rep I got for it (positive or negative) now shows N/A in the Post column. I'd have thought that if you deleted the post, you'd also lose the rep +/-, but I guess not. Maybe the system takes time to update... I'll check again in a couple of hours and see if my rep score has adjusted for the post deletion.

I think the feature should be disabled completely.

I keep getting the weirdest neg comments.

What the hell is "Silly Walks" supposed to convey? (Wasn't even on the thread where some player is asking about getting the ability to make our characters walk instead of always running.) Then there's "Loon," "Bad Videos are Bad," and "NEG NEG NEG".

Even more bizarre is that the bulk of my negative rep comes from posts that are not exactly confrontational or controversial.

Maybe there's actually a bounty thing here in the rep system that works like Siren's Call does... some random individual with a positive rep higher than X (or negative rep lower than X) has his/her name come up, and you have to pick a random post and either ding them if they're positive, or boost them if they're negative. Whichever side wins enough rep mods takes control of the forums for 5 minutes or something.
