So what do people think of the Rep Meter?
Personally, I turned mine off for one reason:
It is a feature of the boards that I am not interested in using.

I know it's bad form to quote oneself, but I actually would like an answer to this.
Does it have an "actual purpose"? What is that purpose please? |
Here's what it says in the vBulletin Manual
Not really a great reason or purpose in my book. Note where it says: "User reputation can be a divisive element of your forum so great care should be taken before a decision is made to enable it."

I personally find the whole rep/karma additions to forums amusing. You can't actually hurt someone by giving them bad rep. I'm sure eventually I'll post something that makes people angry so my green dots becomes red. Its the way of the world.
Rep is awesome. I am trying hard to make innane and unhelpful posts in hopes of collecting as much negative rep as possible.
So pretty much business as usual.
I turned off my meter until such a time as it fills up in lovely red bars and I can unleash its full fury on the world. Mua ha ha.
The problem is I dont post too much, and no one really listens to me anyways, so it may take a while...
Eh, I could care less about the rep meter, will be interesting to see if I acquire any, or if I piss enough people off to get into negative rep.
As it currently stands it's giving the impression that my avatar is taking forever to load.

But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

As long as it does not serve to stifle someone's ability to post, I have little problems with it.
Indeed.
One of the very first things I disabled. I was rather surprised to see it, given how the old "stars" were removed. |
I like it when I can leave genuine positive feedback for authors I don't really like most of the time, too. Both because I think positive reinforcement can help modify behavior and because, even when it doesn't do that for the author, it does help me modify my own feelings about the person or what's going on. Sometimes having just one positive thought about someone I generally dislike can help me have a less stressful and more pleasant day.

My opinion is in my signature. If you feel like saying something then damn well say it. The Reputation system is a throwback to the stars and just another clique filled cluster waiting to happen in the end. Funny how the comments are all anonymous, eh?
Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!
I don't mind the rep part.
I just think you should not be anonymous when leaving bad feedback. |
While I'm sure it would be annoying to get feeback that just says things like "Ur a stoopidhead," etc, I think there's nothing wrong with the ability to leave anonymous negative feedback because it gives people the ability to be honest without fearing retaliation. We all know people who just don't take criticism well. Unfortunately that ability does leave it open for people to leave feedback just to be mean or petty, say something unkind to people they don't like, etc etc. But we take the chance of seeing that every time we log into the internet and open email or anything else where someone can send us a message.

Negative feedback for not liking my avatar... So much fun to get it. I am tellin ya
I've seen several. Usually they start something like "judging by your post count", and depending on what that post count actually is, may branch into "you need a life" or "you're too new to know what you're talking about".

Personally, I argued to keep both post counts and registration date because I used them to help people. If someone comes in asking a question about the game, I checked both post count and reg date and adapted my answer to what I saw. If I saw a recent date and low post count, I would avoid acronyms, include more links instead of saying "check site/thread X", and generally include more details. If the person had been around for years and had a low post count, I would avoid assuming the person was familiar with the number of times the questions had been asked/answered in the past and provide as much info as possible. If the person had an old reg date and a high post count, I'd use acronyms, refer to older posts/examples, and generally gear my answer toward a vet player. I'm sure sometimes I was off the mark - I could have geared a newbie answer toward someone who lurked on the forums for 3 years and just didn't post much. But it always helped me err on the side of caution and prevented me from giving a new player an answer he'd neeed a vet secret decoder ring to figure out.
It's not about the tool, it's about how the tool is used. Lots of people decry any kind of ratings system because they can be and often are abused. That's the fault of the people using them and there's nothing inherently mean or bad about the tools. They've helped me more than they've hurt me and on these forums, I have the ability to turn off and hide the reputation if I ever feel like it's hurting me.

I'd prefer post counts and registration dates to either be removed totally, or hidden in some way - like you can hide other info on your profile.

Just an FYI to Everyone,
Reputation is covered in the Rules and Guidelines
2. Abuse and disrespectful behavior are not tolerated. The purpose of the forum is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas. Occasionally, conflicts may arise when people voice opinions. Be courteous when disagreeing with others. Debating the opinion is appropriate, however criticism against the originator of the opinion is not allowed. Disrespect can be construed as flaming, trolling, harassing, profanity, abusive language or abbreviations, personal attacks, racial, religious, ethnic, sexual slurs, or similar behavior/language. This applies to public threads, private messages, visitor messages on user profiles, reputation comments and calendar notes.
The above are non-exhaustive examples of behavior that is not tolerated on the forums. Directly attacking another poster will result in a warning. If the behavior persists, further consequences may be enacted against your account in our sole discretion. |

Regarding the topic, I don't really mind the rep system. I tend to choose my words carefully, so I rarely post unless I feel I have something of substance to say. Because of this, I have low post count and low visibility, and little reputation to speak of. And I'm okay with that.
William Shakespeare was the Bob Haney of his day!
True story: I was a co-leader of a RP group for some other game. We had our own forums, and another co-leader, who also served as admin for the forums, manipulated his post count to start at "1337" as a joke (it was almost funny back in 2001), while most others were still in the double digits. I asked if there was a way to disable the post count totally, since we were a smallish group on more or less equal standing and didn't really need it, but my request was turned down. I quietly stopped using the forums after that and "forgot" my password, and left the group some time later. At least on these forums, when people pad their post count, they do it more or less honestly.

I'm an admin on a busy sports forum and every so often I drop my post count back to 0, just to mix it up.
Plus it confuses the newbies.

My City Was Gone
In my quest for negative rep I have found that apparently when someone with high rep gives you rep (good or bad) it weighs more heavily then if someone with low rep gives you rep rating...
I was doing so well until one or two big positives came along and pushed me back into the green.
How is it that people are able to tell who is leading the rep ratings as well? PK somehow knew he was #1, but I cant find any listings or ranking pages.
Anyhoo... I think ranking is tons of fun, I just find it wierd that those with high rep "count" more then those without it when they cast their votes. I want all my negative comments to be equally insulting! (at least rep-wise)
keep em comin.
