So what do people think of the Rep Meter?

Even more bizarre is that the bulk of my negative rep comes from posts that are not exactly confrontational or controversial.

Maybe there's actually a bounty thing here in the rep system that works like Siren's Call does... some random individual with a positive rep higher than X (or negative rep lower than X) has his/her name come up, and you have to pick a random post and either ding them if they're positive, or boost them if they're negative. Whichever side wins enough rep mods takes control of the forums for 5 minutes or something.

It works the same way as ratings.

Say something you played has 5 stars. You think it's only worth 4. Instead of voting 4 because you think that's what it's worth, you vote a 1 to bring down the total average in an attempt to make it a 4.

You have a lot of points. People don't think you're worth that many, so they downvote you on principle.

tl;dr version: Jerks.

I was ambivalent about the rep meter until last night. I went into my character profile to change something and saw that I got comments on some of my posts. I didn't know it did that. I saw that someone had used the fact that it was anonymous to toss some insults at me regarding a post I made.

Interestingly, my post was in no way related to whatever it was he was talking about. I had posted some examples of things we take for granted that a new user wouldn't know about (I was talking about the learning curve of the game). Things like the different kinds of defense (typed, positional), combining enhancements, etc. I then got anonymously lambasted and was told that everything I said was faulty opinion (um.... it was all in-game examples, hardly opinion), to keep out of the threads until I stopped farming AE, and to actually take part in the game instead of being an "AE Noob". As a five-year vet, I somehow don't think that I'm an AE Noob, especially since I dislike farming and almost never go into the AE building.

So I'm not sure how I feel about the rep meter. I like getting constructive criticism regarding my posts, but I dislike that jerks can use it to anonymously trash you.

How do you give a rep value of zero though? What does it all mean? I just noticed I had a grey box in my User CP and no comment either. I thought you could only add or subtract.

I think my favorite thing so far is seeing how many people interpret disagreeing with a bad or stupid idea as a "personal attack".

It's also interesting that I keep gathering green blocks in spite of my polarizing nature. I have more fans than detractors. Before the rep meter and its comments I'd have guessed the situation was reversed.

No, we're not... well, most of us aren't. Unless you work out or lead a very active life style you're soft and sweet to the taste. Much like chicken. Not that I would know...

I tested this: my wife's forum account is unused & has a low post count. She's got zero rep. I had her rep me and I got a grey.

So it might be rep from a low-activity, no-rep user.

Bread is murder. Eat a cow. Save the wheat.
Considering how much alcohol is derived from wheat, and my well deserved reputation as an incorrigible lush, I'd have to give Norman Borlaug like +100 rep for ensuring that my source of alcohol was not snatched up in humanitarian efforts to feed third world countries suffering from famine.

When someone leaves a comment like: "... you idiot... please stop posting", that is not a "disagreement", that is a personal attack.

Also, perhaps your detractors have simply put you on ignore, or are just not bothering with the system at all.

So tell me then, I got a rep comment that simply says "rascist". Is that a personal attack or a disagreement with a bad idea?

Now I laughed at the comment as I don't get offended by anonymous snipes.

I love the rep comments. I have laughed so hard at the "negative" feedback I've gotten. And, for the record, it's my mom's house, but it's MY basement!

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

True.
Fortunately, I don't traffic in such nonsense.

hah!

And yes, the negative comments are always very entertaining, if for nothing else than the "WTH?" factor.

The rep comments are being moderated. If you have some that break the forum rules, report them. They may look anonymous to you, but they aren't to the mods.

And just what IS its "actual purpose"?

Feel like I've been thrust back into High School in my mid-40s.

Waiting to be invited to the party this weekend....

Still waiting...

Maybe if I sat more toward the BACK of the bus, instead of the front seat?

I'll eat lunch a little closer to the cool kids' table today...

Seems odd to me - don't get it.

I know it's bad form to quote oneself, but I actually would like an answer to this.

Does it have an "actual purpose"?

What is that purpose please?
