Elitism

Yeah I've been told to shut up a few times. There is a lack of individual respect but you have to expect some people to have no class.

I always revert back to what someone said someone said

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it".

Edit: Due to EULA, your right to say somethings may have to be said elsewhere.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

I have a dear friend who is relatively new to the game and i'm doing my best to teach her all about it. However she is scared to death of teaming with some people because if she makes a single mistake or doesn't do something, they treat her like the worlds going to end and that she's a world class idiot, When really she's just new to the game and is learning the ropes.

Also the last time I joined a PUG in WoW, I was blasted for not using my fear power for crowd control on enemies which were immune to it.

[/ QUOTE ]Freaking n00bs, you don't use Fear for crowd control in instances, the mobs run off and agro additional ones.

On a more serious note, I have to admit I come off as an elitist myself, very often. Though, honestly... I'm not. I just come off like one. People say it's because of the way I speak on the internet, text not carrying emotion over well, etc. I like to study the game mechanics, figure out how things work, and help others understand what I know. I admit I don't know everything and am often wrong or misguided, but I like to consider myself at least fairly knowledgeable about the game. I do this to help others, so they don't get frustrated by making mistakes. Now, I realize "mistakes", buildwise, are subjective, but you really have to draw the line somewhere, such as Radiation Defenders not taking debuff toggles. I'm by no means an elitist to the point of powerset discrimination, at least not seriously. I know Elec Armor Stalkers... suck, but even I played one once because of concept. Concept is king.

Sure, I'll throw a MAJOR hissy fit whenever I see a VEAT in my team without Tactical Training: Maneuvers. But if I'm leading, I won't kick them. I'll tell them they really really REALLY should get it the next time they level up and get to choose a new power.

Of course, at that point, where I'm actually giving someone good advice which would benefit not only the team, but them as well, and they play the "[censored] I PAY FOR THE GAME SO I PLAY HOW I WANT" I'm gonna stop being nice. I still won't kick them, but I won't want them around, and thus won't treat them equally with the other team members who aren't morons. And no, I'm not saying newbies are morons. I'm saying morons are morons.

There are a couple of people on these boards who really do have an overly inflated opinion of themselves, and of the validity of their opinions compared with those of other peoples, but I think that they do tend to stick out and aren't generally indicative of the general forum "feel". We all know who those people are, so perhaps it's better just to take the attitude, "Well that's the way they are, they're like that with everyone, so just let 'em get on with it."

Of the rest of us, I think we all have our moments; hastily created, and subsequently regretted posts, a dry sense of humour coupled with being unknown not translating terribly well in text, it can all contribute to misinterpretation and people can come across as nothing what they're like if you were to meet them outside as it were.

Perhaps the few people that do give that elitist attitude that you're talking about make all of the forums seem like that because they're a) so prolific and b) tend to stick out above the humdrum because of that? I think it's human nature that we tend to notice bad stuff more than we notice good stuff.

I've not really seen much of the EvE or WoW boards, but one I can recommend for an example of elitism and downright rudeness is the Age of Conan forums. You can come away from those wanting to smash stuff.

I remember once we were in a team and someone i invited didn't like the way i was using Hurricane. They were a tank, so they decided to aggro everything on the map, get everyone killed and leave the team. I know it's not a common occurrence but it's exactly that sort of 'i know better than you' attitude that i'm starting to see more of lately.

[/ QUOTE ]

That really was one of my favourite team wipes ever. It really was.

I must have hit it lucky in game, mostly I've had good people giving me advice, and I've tried to pass on what I have learnt to others (even though I am not quite a 6 month vet) However the elitism isn't related only to time in game, because I have had someone with less miles on the clock than me tell me what to respec out on my first trial. Then a few weeks later tell me what powers to take on my new blaster, both times without prompting.

Whatever happened to teaming just for fun thats what I want to know.

I have to say here that in all my years of playing, I rarely come up against the sort of "do your job or else" kind of gamer.
Most of the teams I join or make up tend to take each other for what they are. The evening usually ends up with "thanks for the team. Great fun."
Pretty much regardless who's in it.

It's very rare i meet a pre maddona or, conversly, someone thats so bad that the whole team implodes because of them. Some teams work out better than others but no one, generally, has a hissy fit. It's pretty much all good natured fun.

And I think that's exactly how it should be.

While I'm sure there are people who think they know all and have a serious case of elitism I think it's unfair to say that it's that bad on this forum.

I'm a total noob when it comes to how to play stuff in this game.I hit random power buttons and most of the time it works out well enough...(okay...you do learn a thing or two after so many months) and I never felt that people on here treated me as a noob or thought of me different.

So, while I'm not saying there aren't people on here and in the game who are elitist I think some of you are exaggerating the problem.

Imo of course.

Exactly what I'm saying. There might be a few individuals who portray such behaviour at times; but it most definitely is NOT a problem here.

I rarely play with PUGs except for the odd task force. In my rather limited experience they've all been like this; just a group of people being nice to each other and making the most of it.

I'm sure I'll run into the a**hats eventually but they certainly seem to be a minority.

To the OP, I hope your friend can learn to ignore the goits and enjoy the rest.

I have the same experience. Most people are just trying to have a bit of fun. It is seldom that I encounter people going into that hissy fit (new favorite word ). Most people try to nudge persons with not working builds who are a menace for the team with sometimes less then subtle hints. But it has been a few years since i have seen people thrown out of teams or people starting to whine or rant. I guess most of those went to WoW.

do ya know what... to the OP, if its any consolation, I've been playing this game 4 years 6 months. (at the end of this month it'll be 4 yrs 9 months)

I still KNOW i'm WRONG!

Just to push the arguement the other way I'm forever asking questions here and in game where im not familiar with something. So it's not all of us, and IS a Minority, thankfully

To be honest, while I am horribly judgemental, I try not to be a **** about it when teaming. So sure, there might be one idiot headless chicken or maybe a whole PUG of people who found their brains in a landfill and take things like "don't scoop up every bad guy in the room" as a bit of light humour, but my thought process tends to be, "How the hell can I get out of this without anyone thinking I'm just trying to get out of this....."

I've got to say this isn't my experience.

Sure, people lose their rags on the fora, and I'm as guilty as anyone of calling a spade a spade without using pretty words. Frequently, having done so I realise the error of my ways subsequently and try and at the very least desist.

As for the game itself, I've found everyone to be really friendly and helpful. Sure there's the odd person who might claim to know it all and to proceed to "instruct" you as to how to play but if you politely tell them thanks for the advice but you're ok, it usualy works out.

As for new players, I don't want to put words in my friends mouth, but she recently joined from WoW and is really enjoying it - and the friendly attitude from other players I think.

To coin a horrible americanese acronym, YMMV, but I think you've either been very unlucky or your friend hasn't been teaming with the right people.

Maybe i'm just feeling a little annoyed at the fact that she feels she can't team with others simply because she's worried they'll say something about how she's chosen to create her character, Which is making me a little biased I know it's not everyone and i did mention in my first post I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush, there are plenty of respectable people in this game. Minority ruins it for the rest.

For me personally i like the social aspect of the game. I like to play as well as chat and have a laugh. There is a guy who is probably going to read this, who is funny as hell and i absolutely adore teaming with him, he usually has me in fits of laughter by the end of the night, though he won't post on the forums for some reason. I also have a penchant for dying which i find quite refreshing. I have brought my friend into this environment now and she's enjoying herself like she should be.

I just wonder how many new people leave because they don't get to experience this due to the fact that emphasis is placed more on your build and power combinations than actual fun. I don't feel it's anyone else's job to be telling others how they should be playing/how to build a character, unless they ask you too. People should be allowed to have whatever powers they like and whatever power selection they like without fear of repercussions from others.

Maybe that's an ideal world but i don't think it's unachievable.

once again i totally agree with u, i havent posted much on the forums myself really, normally just read them, but thats mainly due to the fact that sometimes i see peeps getting blasted for no reason just for having an opposing opinion even tho they are polite and not forcing said opinion on anyone, but after reading the start of this thread i thought sod it, if i wanna post im gonna post and as long as im polite and friendly and not condescending etc etc then if someone still gets ratty just cos my opinion may differ im not gonna be put off, cos it does annoy me to see people acting as if they own the forums and think that if ur opinion doesnt totally agree with theirs they start ranting and being rather nasty to u, having said that tho while annoying as that is, in the grand scheme of things it is more of a minority and the vast amount of peeps on here are genrally nice

Nothing like a thread about community elitism to bring out the WoW hate brigade.

Hey guys, newsflash - forums aren't indicative of the gaming populace. If you've had serious, consistent issues on WoW ingame then you're either one the unluckiest people or you're being a total jerk yourself.

I'm elitist. I'm horribly elitist. I don't have a problem with new players not knowing how things work or how to play x to it's best potential - I just don't enjoy playing with them that much. Their style/speed of play simply doesn't match mine, I have friends that don't match. It's not a huge deal.

Elitism is fine and dandy, being a dick isn't and while similar, they're different things.

Thats actually a fair point. At least one of the SGs im in is considered to be Elitist in terms of RP. Now, for us, that just means high quality. We're willing to take on new people, teach them as best we can and be as nice as we can.

Elitist doesnt always = horrible. That is a bit of misconception. I do admit you do, thanfully rarely, get some real goits in-game. But on the whole, people arent too bad. And, should you get a group with them in, its for your enjoyment to shrug and walk away =] dont let em ruin the fun!

Even the biggest Elitist can be the biggest noob. Even 40+ vet badges, and they still wont read player description or search comment. So on my dedi empath, i had a few 'why are you not attacking' replies, so when i eventualy start running it and spam my brawl (its slotted!) they call me noob for doing so..

But its just the evolution of online gaming, everyone knows best, everyone dissagree with him is a big noob and should go learn some facts. Be it this game, or any other MMO i play(ed), same ol'.
