I want to experience level 40-50 Hero content.

But I can't manage to stick with a Hero that long.

The lack of Story Arcs (and poor quality of existing ones compared to CoV Arcs), the amount of hunt missions, the homogenous zones (not counting hazard zones, Faultline, and Croatoa), and so on.

I hear it turns much, much better past level 40, with Peregrine Island, and Portal Corp, among other things.

But if the content of lower levels bores me to no end, the only viable solution is to simply roll a fun character and team a lot, right?

Well, that's where I have difficulties. So far, I haven't managed to find a "fun" Hero to play.

Scrappers feel like boring versions of Brutes. They trade Fury for higher base damage, and a small chance to Critical randomly. It's rather unpredictable - I've managed to critical against a blue-conning Minion when it's on its final sliver of health, but I've also managed to two-shot Frostfire on a MA/ Scrapper with Focus Chi and a lucky Crane Kick critical. Still, I've gotten two Scrappers to mid-30s and they kind of stop being exciting at that point. One of them is Claws, and I really really hate the Barrage animation on Slash now. Yes, I know I'm being unreasonable and stupid about it. The other is MA/Regen and I just can't stand /Regen. I waited 34 levels for it to stop feeling like I'm naked, playing a Blaster without ranged attacks, with an unlimited Respite on a 30 second recharge, a reactive "godmode" (IH) and Dull Pain. Integration is a generic mez protect power with a cool shiny effect that matches my costume, so that's kind of cool I guess. Overall, the regen from FH, Health, and Integration put together is something I simply do not notice. Oh, I solo just fine, I just faceplant every 5 seconds in large teams. I'm probably playing it wrong, but I just can't figure it out, nor do I want to anymore by now.

Defenders... I've tried a few. Murphy's Law declares that the moment I make one, there are no more teams around my level on the server, ever. Besides, I can't think of any particular powerset combo that'd actually sounds interesting to me, anyway...

Controllers? Same as Defenders. I've been interested in trying out an Earth/Storm, but Trollers seem to solo even worse than Defenders. At least they do, for me. I find myself unable to get teams and get frustrated and bored by the time I reach the Hollows.

Blasters look vaguely interesting when I'm not playing them. Highest I've gotten one was 20, and I was wholeheartedly unimpressed with the fun factor - All I do is damage. A few random toys in the secondary, but mostly all damage. The damage didn't feel that great either, I'm assuming it only becomes godlike at higher levels, with higher tier attacks. But I get bored waiting that long.

Tankers. I have a level 31 Invul/SS Tanker. No, don't get me wrong, I really honestly do -like- Invul. I actually loved this Tanker. My reason for quitting him was rather silly - a thematic duo with a friend. The friend quit, and I can't bring myself to level the Tanker again. Don't bother trying to persuade me otherwise, please, I'm clinging to the "what if he returns one day?" thought.

I have 3 level 50s, all villains. One of them is an Elec/Elec Brute - I LOVE Fury. One of them is a Crab Spider - It's like a Blaster, Scrapper and Mastermind rolled into a tight little ball of insane fun. With buffs and a sick -Res debuff. One of them is a Thugs/Dark Mastermind - I didn't roll it because it's FotM or anything, honest. He's a Skulls Bone Daddy. I love his concept, and I love Soul Storm's looks.

So, based on all this... Can anyone recommend something really fun and addictive for me to play Heroside? Something that'd dispel my bad impressions of some of the Archetypes? Something that'll last to level 40 and beyond without being dreadfully boring at either the beginning or the end of his or her career. And something I could think of a good concept for too, if at all possible.

If you've got any more questions on my preferences and/or playstyle, just ask and I'll try to answer. Help you help me and all that.

Try spines, i love it. About story arcs have you done the striga arcs? freaklympics?

i've a blaster fire/energy and it works quite good, you blast everyone away and anyone to close can be knocked back.
the best thing is with fly and teleport, you fly out of sight of an enemy and teleport right at front of the enemy, but in the same time knocking the enemy away.
for the rest, it's all about what you like the most, what do you have as villain and try to mimic that in a hero.
i know it's hard since some things are really villain only, but working around it might help you search what you want.

Earth/storm, the set that does pretty much the lowest damage at earlier lvls Grav ill or fire would have been a better choice.

But your story is pretty much the exact opposite of how i think about CoH/CoV

Shame you haven't had much luck hero-side. I haven't had much villian-side, apart from my fire/fire brute!

I would highly recommend earth/rad. I've got one, and got to 50 pretty fast! Its an awesome combo- The damage is just about as low as it comes, but you'll really shine in teams. I think earth is possibly the most controlling set, so although you won't be able to hurt them much, you can completely subdue a large mob whilst the rest of your team blasts and scraps them to death. Rad is awesome too and especially in those last 10 levels, you'll be loved by all for your amazing debuffs as there are so many AVs to take down!

As for getting teams, I'd advise playing on Union. I say that reluctantly as I'm 100% defiant, but apparently Union is more populated.

Anyway, give it a go

Me I have a level 48 MM, I can't get beyond logging her in before I'm bored to tears. CoV 40+ IMO is a joke, at least up till that point there is an illusion of self will and genuine nastiness. After that point the evil becomes stupidity, and any time you do something genuinely fun in an arc the last mission is pretty much to stop they guy you've been working for up to that point.

MMs are summon buff, die, res, summon buff die... ad nausea. What was so much fun for the last 38 or so levels with new shinys to help you becomes a chore as the only new power picks are so underwhelming.

So you could say I feel much the opposite to you.

Going Rogue will fix all that... *prays to devs*

As for that most of the fun I have had on CoH is:

Fire/Kin, Mind/Rad (bit underpowered with no pet but very fun ), Nrg/Dev, Fire/Nrg.

If you play on Defiant I'm sure you can come play something with me, I won't say it'll be more fun but IMO fun is more about who you play with than what you play.

You have come furthest with a scrapper. Ever tried a dual blades scrapper? With dual blades you can either choose the first attack available or try to hurt them with those combination moves. I find them more interesting to play then a normal scrapper because of this.

For blaster try an AR/dev. It's a tricky one with some fun gadgets to play with. Strange that I just can't seem to play dominators I want to do damage OR do somehting defensive both at the same time is weird. It is hard to do a good job at both of them. To often you see dominators go all defensive in groups.

Finally there are the tankers. You loved one and want to see your friend come back. Well there are other tank combinations for you to try.

About the storyarcs i agree wholeheartedly. Compared to CoV they are a bit bland. But CoV arcs get bland as well when you have to redo them time and again. The good thing about CoH is that they have many more arcs available. Try checking out wiki and look for a few arcs you havent done yet.

As some of the others have said - I stuggled red-side until around lvl 40's when I started to really enjoy my stalker

My all-time favourite alt is a Fire/Fire tank. Although the weaker shields mean a little care has to be taken the pure Dmg of Fire Melee means 90% of the time I come out on top of the 'kill or be killed' draw

As you said Col. the lvl 40+ cpontent on CoH is better than the rest of it IMO - a lot of that has to do with the many AV arcs, Carnies and Nemesis goodness. Sadly the only thing I can recommend is persistance (and a good active SG) to get you there. I got my stalker to lvl 32 before she bored me to tears then I went back a couple of months later af the ride to 50 after the break! It may be worth leaving your heroes alone for a few weeks, go back to Villains and then come back at it with a fresh perspective. Find a good team and scrap away!!!

Funny I can't play villains. But love heroes. I love Blasters.

Yeah, I much prefer the hero ATs too. The only villain ATs I really like are SoA.

Controllers are probably the most complex, and therefore most interesting hero AT to play. Any AT can solo, for controllers and defenders, the debuff sets will make it much easier. Illusion is a good set for soloing on a controller Ice Blast is a good set for soloing on a blaster or defender.

I really should do something about this signature.

Although i prefer villain ATs, i always found CoV to be the one lacking in content. Unlike heroes where at several level points i have multiple zones to chose from, CoV is very linear.

2 tips:

1 you don't HAVE to do hunt missions. you usually get given a choice of 1 hunt, 1 instance outside of arcs. when a contact only offers hunts, move on.

2 organise a regular Duo with a friend so you've always got someone you know to play with. CoH ATs work a lot better working together. A tank and Blaster, or scrapper and controller makes for good teaming.

Well personally I can happily play any architype in any combination, I'll find a way to make them work somehow.

However I know what you mean, the hero arcs are numerous but a bit meh, compared to the villainous arcs. I have 50s on both sides of the moral divide, I think the villains were more fun to level. I disagree about the content falling off at a higher level, some of the best villain arcs are 40+ yeah the patron arcs seem a bit mad when you turn on the person at the end, but hey, that's only that particular batch of missions...:P

Again the later arcs on Heroes can be good, especcially the Portal Corp stuff, my advice for heroes would simply be to stick it out, if you find an AT that you enjoy just push through to those later stages.

OR you could make the decision NOT to play heroes, yeah the praetorian arc's fun and there is good stuff in those higher reaches but if you cant settle on an AT dont worry about it. You wouldn't be the first to play only one side, and you've actually tried heroes so you can say it's not for you.

Though I think trying another tank would be a good idea too as, from what you said in your post, that could be your AT of choice.

Doing TFs whilst in xp range can help jump past sticking points.

I think I'm right in saying that CoH has more TFs/trials than CoV has SFs/trials - so there's usually 1 or 2 that you're in xp range for.

Well Col as far as I can see you've been looking for a bit like the Brute equivalent Hero side, we both know there isn't one.

If you want to go for some damage and being intersting try (As has been suggeste) Dual-Blades always fun, just don't take /regen.

Alternativly You could try a controller (Or mabye a 'fender, you never know) I would be willing to roll a new alt and give you a hand getting there with the extra damage.

Final thought, though it's True CoV has better and more linked arcs, don't immidatly dismiss the regular arcs Hero side, somtimes you come acros a surprising or intersting arc you've never done before, I've been pleasently surprised. And A tip I have for the hunts to get 'em out of the way, is if possible hunt memebrs of that faction who Con Grey, be through it in no time.

Uhm, obout your Regen Scarppers, maybe you have slotted em an little wrong. I personell love em and feel Unkillable at lvl 17 (slotted Interogation ). My Claw Reggen always search for higher Difficulty Option.
But Anyway, Stone / STorm is an powerfull Combo in late Game, just stick to him and ask People around your Lvl who are in teams if there is any Space for you, most Times you get an Invite and then the Fun Starts.

GL to you.

30s are the hardest part of the game. Word.
The trick is rally to team as much as possible. CoV seems to be mainly about soloing. CoH is the exact opposite. 8 manning an unyielding AV mission is normally a challange that also ramps up the exp gained.
Oh, and lvl 35 = RWZ

As for ATs, I find blasters more fun than Corrupters, really. Blasters are lethal whatever range they are. Corrs are good at range but then feel like a weak defender type.
If you want a fast lvling defender, go for full empath. Mine went from 1-20 in near record time the only reason she stopped is cos I aint logged her in ages.

The 30s are the dullest levels in the game. Hit 40 and you suddenly get challenged with carnies, knives of artemis, nemesis, lots of fun AV arcs and the joy of seeing shadow shards for the first time.

As for ATs, i love dual blades/willpower scrapper and inv/ss tank. Ok the tank doesn't slam through mobs like a brute does, but overall can steamroller over most (non psi) enemies.

Dual blades always sound cool to me, but i just cant stand the animations. My best i tried was lvl20, i gave up

(along with the new [censored] walk they added with any toon that dual whields or sortlike - bow, spines, db.. no not my style).

The romantic rumour that the 40-50 content should be something different and fantastic (just waaait til you get to meet the AV;s!) is ... bull. To me. I think that I'll agree that CoV has a lot better story arcs but also more fun mission with more variation. The whole fight the AV-thing in CoH is quite boring to me. They are just like minions only it takes a lot longer to kill'em. (Hmm, arrest)

Hi Col B, I would suggest a Dark/Dark defender, you will always be busy doing stuff to the enemy but you won't have to buff your team mates all the time.
If you need to you can also solo very effectivly as you get fearsome stare and tenebrous tentacles for control and nightfall to take care of minions. You also get a perma pet and a single target hold not to mention all the awesome debuffing and fantastic heal.

I usually go Hollows to Frostie, Faultline, Striga, Croatoa, RWZ, Portal corp.

Alts which might be fun.

Controller
Illusion Control. Works great in teams, or solo. You have an AoE Fear pet which is perma out of the box, which not many enemies are resistant to (Nemesis is one, Romans, but only if they start shouting at each other). It's best to combine this with a debuffing set, as your main weapon, the Phantom Army, aren't affected by outside buffs. Radiation, Sonics, and Storm have all been popular secondary choices for Illusion, as they have debuffs which work well with teams and on your own.

Scrapper
Broadsword/Katana. Arguably the most hard-hitting of the Scrapper sets, with Broadsword being stronger than Katana, while Katana being faster and more end-light, so I heard. Probably best to not combine with a end heavy secondary, as it might be a bit frustrating on early levels, though any set will probably work well with it (barring Regen, perhaps, too many click buttons causes redraw?). Parry/Divine can stack to increase your defence to melee, which is pretty useful for a scrapper, and combined with a secondary which uses defence, is a bonus. You can even slot Achille Heel procs into your attacks to reduce the resistance of your enemies to cause even more damage. Even though the effect has been fixed so it's not permanent anymore, it's still worth doing.

Issue 11's FotM Dual Blades/Willpower is a fun set to use. But only probably because I got infected with the 'superteam' syndrome on test server when everyone and their mothers were making DB/WP or WP/DB alts, so all you could hear was slashing sounds all over the place...

Blaster
Well. Any blaster is fun, really. Once you've been in a 8-blaster team, you'll never look at them the same way again. All of them are fun to use, with some lacking in damage compared to others due to no Buildup (Assault Rifle), or doing Lethal (AR, or Archery), but they make up for it with end-efficient nukes. Hey, at least Carnies have vulnerability to lethal... :3

Secondaries... Mental Manipulation is the current favorite at the moment, though outstanding is still Energy, I think. Fire/MM, Ice/MM, Sonic/MM, all of these are fun sets to use. Fire/Nrg, Ice/Nrg are still viable too.

Tanker
Hrm... how about Dark/Dark? Could be fun. With higher tanker resistances, with Tough included, you might be pretty durable. You would have to do something about knockback though, of course.
