Asking "Gambit" be unbanned for MA mission titles
Thanks for reviewing the list.
Although I'm currently heartily stumped trying to figure out why two names that I have on live characters are causing the MA editor to spit out "Invalid name. Please try another." Seems to me that either Test has a more restrictive "blocked" list than Live, or perhaps something else is up?
(For the record, the two names I seem to be unable to use on NPCs in the MA creator are Paradox Backlash and Voodoo Six.)
I only know of two English swears for fecal matter and they both have the same weight to me.

This seems like a decent place to ask: any idea what is wrong with using the word "amalgam" as part of a creature name? It wasn't the rest of the name, it accepted it when I replaced amalgam with hybrid, and the one extra letter shouldn't have put me over the character limit.
Edit: Wikipedia to the . . . rescue? Apparently there is a marvel character by that name. I'd never heard of her, unsurprisingly since as far as I can tell she showed up in only one issue.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think it was so much that individual character, but the DC Vs. Marvel comic books in the mid-90's. DC and Marvel together formed Amalgam Comics, where characters from either publisher merged with one another.
Thank you, Champion.
Had to change the name of a character whose last name was 'Whitman' (common spelling, as in Walt Whitman) because the word 'hitman' in "profane."
Apparently there's a DC character that uses that as a name.

Well, there goes my idea for a dentist AV.
edit: y'know, i have generally been sympathetic to individuals or organizations, large or small, who want to retain some control over their creations.
But after reading this thread, i have decided that litigation and IP hooliganism are completely out of control, people(tm) who want(r) to legally protect(C) every damn sound and sight should be relegated to the lowest circle of hell, and Shakespeare was right about lawyers after all.
I'm going to guess that's why I can't use the words "Voodoo" or "Backlash", also.
And while I understand not wanting to have characters named -exactly- the names of pre-existing characters, I think it's rather heavy-handed to bar the use of the words at all.
(Which makes me curious: Has anyone tried to use 'The Rogue Isles' in a mission title? If that isn't blocked due to "Rogue", then all of the Marvel/DC character names need to be unblocked for use (when not used in their exact form for character names) within the Mission Architect system.)
Most people will probably refer to the Rouge Isles anyway, blissfully unaware of the fliter bullet they dodged >.

The word "god" is also censored in the editor. So that's why you'll be reading about "göds" instead.

Any particular reason why you just didn't say 'deities'? I mean, "Gambit" is a cool sounding word, but 'God' is just a boring one-syllable honk. 'Deity' at least sounds cool.
On the other hand, umlauts are cool...

Crap is banned on the radio, according to the fcc. Same with any word that emulates it. Kinda super weak, but there you go. Blame the fcc.
The irony is that the term comparing usually a female person with a female dog is perfectly ok for radio.
I've got my stalker Artimis Setelana. She has 317 badges last I checked. Yay!

It would be nice if they could just post a list of all the banned words.
That way we know what not to use in our texts .
But that, of course, can't happen because it would require a real published list of the "Bad" words , which might offend someone, which is of course why the words are banned in the first place.

Phoenix is a mythical creature that's been around for a LONG time, since the Egyptian times. It's also the name of a city and various sporting groups. Kinda hard to call that one "copyrighted."
Gambit, however, is a little more of a clear cut case. It's a word, no special history applied to it. A chess tactic, a sacrifice to obtain a better position. Pretty much able to be copyrighted as a name for somebody, but not as a word.
[/ QUOTE ]
Names can't be copyrighted. No single word can be copyrighted. Words can be trademarked when used for a specific purpose, like as a name for a super powered character, for instance, but that's not copyright and entirely different rules apply.

It's not specifically banned. The FCC uses a rule of "Community Standards" when considering if something is an obscenity or not, and with few exceptions, this is not a rigid list. This is why we've seen a loosening of some content in television and radio, especially after hours, in recent years, because community standards are changing.

In-game dialect uses the word "entities" a lot. That's what I plan on using. Unless that word's blocked because there was some one-shot villain of the month from a 1977 issue of Captain America by that name I don't know about, grumble grumble.
P.S. DoctorFear is correct about names being possibly trademarked but not copyrighted.

I'd like to ask them to remove the word "Hazard" from the list.
Now, I did some research, so I know that both Marvel and DC have characters named Hazard. The thing is, though, I belong to a SG called the "Hazard-Guard", which, for whatever reason, is not blocked on the live servers.
I guess Marvel and DC can both use the word "Hazard", but a NC gamer such as myself using it would just be taking it too far?

Y'know, I haven't really watched much Lupin. No, the hostage in question is the one in my published arc, "The Other Side of the Screen" (no Arc ID right now, I'm at work so I can't get to the game). And really he would've been using stronger language than "crap" but the four-letter word for excrement that I wanted to use is definitely blocked by the filter, so I wasn't going to bother trying to use it.
