Asking "Gambit" be unbanned for MA mission titles

They need to stick to the simple profanity filter, but even then, that filter is almost retarded, I remember the word "cracker" being censored and I wasn't even using it the racial manner...

It's not like our filter has ever taken anything into context.

But that is over the top, still. Because if it is, what am I supposed to offer Polly?

The goal with the over-restrictive filters is to keep the potential from a lawsuit from happening. Not to be in the right should a lawsuit occur.

When I read this all I couldthink of is all those old john wayne movies my granfather used to watch " Know hat I mean...Pilgrim?"

"My only possible explanation for this is the a Pilgrim is considered a Holy Man and GOoDness knows we have to be politically correct and can't use anything that suggests the existance of ... well you know who. I solved my problem by switching the contact to Mentor Lazarus but it still almost hysterical that they even banned me from using the name of a character they placed in the game themselves. LOL "

"Polly want a Wheat Thin?"
"Polly want a Saltine?"
"Polly want a Ritz?"

You are right, it doesn't sound right.

Hopefully the devs will let crackers back in the game! Un-ban crackers!!!

Perhaps they need to set up a different filter for custom critter names, because seriously, you can't copyright the word "gambit," nor any other word. Perhaps Marvel or DC will introduce a new hero named "The" and destroy fiction entirely.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was never a question of Copyright. It's a question of Trademark, which is an entirely different set of laws overseen by an entirely different government agency. You cannot copyright a word, but you CAN Trademark one.

Actually, pretty sure it's the same agency. But yeah, trademarks are the issue here.

Had to change the name of a character whose last name was 'Whitman' (common spelling, as in Walt Whitman) because the word 'hitman' in "profane."
Apparently there's a DC character that uses that as a name.

I could just see another of the big publishers deciding to get into the super hero MMO market and concoct an evil plan to preemptively kill the competition without resorting to litlgation... Hmmm... This is starting to sound like an AE arc. Anyway:

Encourage employees to get trial accounts.

Monitor the heavily populated zones and take notes on really good sounding names and creative costumes.

Report back to the corporation's big archvillain their findings.

Publish a one shot or miniseries a few months later that make use of all these names and looks.

Wait for comics fans who play CoX but are not employees of said evil corporation to loyally report all these sudden trademark violations.

Mass genericings ensue

Mass exodus from the game ensues

Fade to black.

Evil corporation unveils their new shiny super hero MMO.

Corporation's top archvillain instructs his cronies and shareholders to laugh with him. AH-Hah-hah-hah-hah...

Okay. The above scenario is unlikely. The PHBs that tend to run these organizations are not that ingenious (I don't think at least). But it could still happen. However, I suspect a more likely tactic would involve getting the competition involved in litigation over something even more idiotic in imaginary property laws... software patents.

You should make it into a MA arc. That would be gold!

Is there someone we can PM about the possibilities unblocking certain terms? Just curious, the filter is blocking a fairly common Latin word and this is troublesome for writing in Latin.

[/ QUOTE ]
Let me guess... One of the words you'd use writing the Latin for "with a grain of salt"?

Crap is banned on the radio, according to the fcc. Same with any word that emulates it. Kinda super weak, but there you go. Blame the fcc.

The irony is that the term comparing usually a female person with a female dog is perfectly ok for radio.

Apparently 'Buzz' is verboten now, too. The list's grown in the last few weeks.

So much for 'The Buzz Killers', now I have no published arcs. I'm grasping for an explanation for this one, though. "Buzz"? Really?

Is it [censored] [censored] [censored] or is the [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] of [censored]?

Ah, Marvel, our favorite trademark troll. Publish some obscure what-if mini-arc lasting all of three issues, and they think they own the word forever. Or at least nine years later.

(And never mind that Marvel vs. NCSoft made it clear that players using Marvel names and likenesses isn't trademark infringement, so NCSoft can't be liable for indirect trademark infringement arising from such use.)

P.S. Marvel also thinks they own the words "amalgam" "showcase" "tangent" and "ultimate" among many others. I don't know how Marvel managed to get NCSoft to cave to this level of blatant trademark trolling, but those words are sadly off limits to us as well.

No, don't pin this on Marvel. Yes they started the lawsuit that resulted in all this, but the truly guilty party here is whichever dev came up with this ridiculous banlist of words. Considering you can use most of these words to create character names, I doubt this is a result of Marvel getting even more protective.

I just wish the devs would address this. Not even change it, just someone explain why this list needs to be so over-exhaustive. As far as I'm concerned, this is a bug.

I'm singling out Marvel because I think Marvel is still making intellectual property demands. I don't know for sure, but there is circumstantial evidence:

1) The new ban list has only a few huge DC trademarks, such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Globally famous names like that.
2) Other than that, the new ban list is loaded with Marvel "trademarks", most of which I haven't seen or heard of in years, if ever.
3) Marvel has a documented history of being (hmm, how to put this politely) aggressive about restricting use of their "trademarks" in this game.
4) The terms of the settlement in Marvel vs. NCSoft are secret, but my guess is it cemented City of Heroes's already-existing accommodations for trademark trolls -- i.e. you've still got our number, call us anytime. What was once voluntary trademark overprotection could now be a court-enforceable mandate.

If you still think it's someone at NCSoft doing this list, that's also a viable theory. There are some oddballs on the list like "spartans" and "vash stampede" that don't look like they came from an outside source. Even so, that still suggests GMs have a really long list of "trademarks" from Marvel to check against, but not so much from DC or others.

What about "The Phoenix Chicanery"?

Actually, I'm almost certain that "buzz" is banned because of the drug connotations.

What's been annoying me is that I can't insert my blaster Amalgamate into a mission, but it's not for the reasons you might think. Specifically, it's not the world "amalgam" that's the problem, it's the string "amal" that the MA has an issue with. It took me a while to figure out why.

Come ON. Nobody is going to try to sneak dirty words into the game using that spelling. It's ridiculous that the filter is so berserk that character names that are valid for the real game get locked out of the MA.

Alright. Regardless of the reasoning for banning these words and phrases -- oh, heck, let's just say for the sake of argument they're banned for all of the above reasons. Copyrights and trademarks and drugs and near-naughty words. I think there's still a consensus that the filter is overdoing it.
