Something seriously needs to be done with the text filter in this game. You can't use the word God but Jesus is just fine.

I believe it's because Jesus (pronounced hay-zoos) is a common Hispanic name. It's like blocking the word John.

Not a whole lot of people name their kid "God". At least I wouldn't think so.

Usage of common words should be allowd in the Mission Architect. Being restricted to only common words that have never been the name of a comic book character is just silly.
Gambit, chamber, cable, leech, sentry, and dozens of other characters have names that are common words that do not automatically mean that specific character whenever they are used.

Could I use this line of dialog though?: "Go check the power cable in the sentry chamber."

It contains the names of 3 different Marvel characters in a completely different context.

Actually it's 4, Chamber is a Marvel Character. Which again points out how ridiculous it is to disallow words just becuase they happen to be either Marvel or DC character names. If you make a character that looks exactly like one of the Marvel or DC characters then I can see a fuss being raised but otherwise it should be ok.

I was disappointed about Sentry because I am making a complete enemy group called the Gatekeepers. I have Lookout, Sentinel, Key Keeper, Ward and Protector. I was hoping for another ranged minion class that could be called Sentry.

I guess it's just another limitation they've built into MA that will hopefully be fixed but has to be worked around until then.

Hey everyone we have been reviewing the filtered word list, several have been removed although I'm not sure if the list is back in place as of yet.

Some of these you are listing are in our filtered names list which is different, sounds like we'll need to scrub that as well.

We'll keep you posted as we update.

Please make the text-matching smarter. "Agent Xerxes" is banned because it contains the string "Agent X". There's no reason to filter *copyrightedword* - filter * copyrightedword * instead.

Is there someone we can PM about the possibilities unblocking certain terms? Just curious, the filter is blocking a fairly common Latin word and this is troublesome for writing in Latin.

As Ex announced, they are already lookin into it a little.

But I'll bite.
What is the word?

There are many common English words that are profanity-filtered.
REALLY common ones.

I wanted to name the boss of my Lawyers faction Rainmaker. That name is apparently disallowed also.

But I'd agree it shouldn't be filtered.

*sighs* Sadly, I can't find the webpage that discussed that meme anymore...but suffice it to say that that only works because the majority of English words are 4 and 5 letters long. In that sentence, a good number of the words aren't even altered.

But try deciphering something like this using that "logic".

However, on topic...just use a synonym. It sucks that you can't use it...but come up with something else that works just as well. *shrug*

It's also been thoroughly denounced by pretty much every major university in England and the US as "not from here."

Nobody is entirely sure where it came from at this point.

Phoenix is a mythical creature that's been around for a LONG time, since the Egyptian times. It's also the name of a city and various sporting groups. Kinda hard to call that one "copyrighted."

Gambit, however, is a little more of a clear cut case. It's a word, no special history applied to it. A chess tactic, a sacrifice to obtain a better position. Pretty much able to be copyrighted as a name for somebody. Still, that's what we have the "Report for objectionable content" button for.

[/ QUOTE ]

You can't copyright the word gambit. You can copyright the character Gambit, but not the word itself. If it's not in a character context, it should be perfectly fine.

[/ QUOTE ]

I fixed my initial post to be a little more clear, but this is what I was saying in my post. Gambit cannot be copyrighted. Gambit, the Marvel Comic Character, can.

Close.

You can copyright a whole artistic work, such as Uncanny X-Men #NNN. Characters and other elements of that work are protected only in as much as they are parts of the whole. That becomes important in a fair use defense, where using a part is more likely to be permitted fair use than using the whole.

The more relevant issue with name filtering is trademarks.

According to my testing, "God" is blocked due to a flaw in CoH's implementation of Lineage's "profane text" list. "Damn" is unblocked due to the same flaw.

Yes but I know of at least one family that named their son 'Adolf Hitler' and a daughter name 'Aryan Nation'. I wouldn't use those in the MA, and I certainly wouldn't name my kids those names...egads!!!

The amazing irony of this conversation is that the subject line for me cuts off "titles" after the second "t", thereby creating a word that would be censored if it was in the body of the post.

Question >.< Why is "Crap" filtered? <;_;> It seems like such a harmless word. Is there a meaning beyond "poo" I'm not getting?

I've resorted to lots and lots of @%#! type swears, since I can't even use crap. It actually makes my characters sound even more foulmouthed <'x'>;;

That word is considered a swear word. As such it is blocked by the profanity filter. If you wish to see that word turn off your profanity filter.
