Guide: Solving Vista Error 13/14/driver stopped..

Yeah, I'm spending more time rebooting the game than playing it. My information is a few posts above. After 51 months on the game, and dealing off and on with various tech issues, this is by far the most annoying and hampering to me. I'm hopeful that someone on the tech side is evaluating and trying to get an official fix for this soon.

thx

so everyone downloaded sp2(which is still in beta) for vista. first clue should be the word BETA. it is still being tested. it is not complete. if anyone hasn't noticed or doesn't remember, the issues running the game on vista came after Cryptic left and NC put out i12. before i12 bugs were limited and taken care of in a timely fassion. now, there are still bugs floating around since i12.

No, I don't specific remember those issues because they were not ones that I had and I did not have my Vista computer until a few months ago.

When I got my new computer, I would have the NVLDDwhatever crash usually a couple times a playing day, which was aggravating enough. Having it happen a couple times an hour on both our machines since I-14 is unacceptable for me.

That is why I posted my CoH and HiJack this info, in case I'm missing something obvious. I'm not a techie. I just like to play the game.

HELLO fellow COX players!

Well, I'd just like to report for NOW, (knocks on wood), that I have been playing strong for 2 days, each in 4 hour time frames, and NO crashes until this point.

I am enjoying this, even though I don't play for 4+ hours straight, I'm safe to say that if I tried more, it won't crash.

I went to Microsoft's webpage, and requested the SP2 BETA, since then it has worked perfectly.

I'm now able to run the game at MAX settings. [Well that was me, I didn't know how to set them.]

I suggest doing that SP2 Beta if you REALLY want to play, or just cancel subscription for now, wait for the OFFICIAL release of SP2 and you'll be playing in full glory.

Thanks, take care, and good luck peeps!

Thanks for the posts. This may help a lot with my other computer.

I will add too that on the same machine, I can boot into XP, Vista, and Windows 7. XP and Windows 7 no crashes. Vista crashes. And the game looks actually best in Windows 7 on my setup.

Windows 7 goes from beta to RC very soon to the public. Like tomorrow according to the message Microsoft put out a little while back.

Would they put Windows 7 out as a release candidate right when they are pushing Vista SP2 out? SP2 has got to be mighty close. Heck, I just downloaded an 'installation helper' as an 'important' update.

I wonder what we should do with this topic once it comes out? The past 20 pages are going to be mostly irrelevant.

Amazing that W7 is moving along so fast. Somebody needs to get a warrant to search Microsoft's campus to look for whips. After Windows 7 is released, of course.

I'm trying unsuccessfully to apply the hotfix, apparently I don't know what the hell I'm doing because it won't work. What folder should I apply it too? I keep getting error 40 and it doesn't unzip. Please help, this morning's patch has made this so bad I can't even get to the login page.

The problem I'm having is that CoX crashes the driver for my gtx 295, I've tried about 8 different driver sets, same thing each time. The hotfix won't apply on my system(vista 64 bit), I get an "incorrect version" message when I try to run the 64 bit version. SP2 is no longer in beta, it ended april 28th so I can't download that either.

Any suggestions?

One thing is, use the 64hotfix, not the 86. He typo'd it in the first post and never (couldn't?) change it. x86 is code for 32bit stuff.

Edit: I just installed the vista 64 sp2 RTM, the actual final version of sp2. Played for about 10 minutes afterwards and then crashed. I'm using the newest nvidia drivers for my 8800gt. Here is my info

I found a finalized version of sp2 on a bittorrent, installed it and now I seem to be up and running no problem, just blasted through a 4 hour play session, not a single hiccup.

Okay, my info is up above, but here is an update.

The two newest Nvidia drivers crash out with error 14 or just a driver stopped.
The 169.25 Omega 3rd party drivers crashed with a 'driver stopped' error, same as before.
The official 169.25 Nvidia driver crashed the same way.

Each time, I would uninstall the old drivers, reboot into safe mode, use the guru3d driverwiper to clear out a ton of missed bits, reboot into normal mode, then install the new drivers. Then another reboot, and test.

Running Vista64 SP2, and ran only Vista64 drivers. Q6600 and a gf8800gt is this systems main things. Full stats are a few posts up.

Edit: Made my own thread here.

Make sure you DL the PhysX driver from the NVidia site... a lot of crashes happen because when you turn up the settings in the game it starts tryin to use those fx and the driver isn't there. I also use a 8800 GT and it has a PhysX card built in. So you don't need to have the separate card.

You don't. Instead, you want to go to Windows Update and check the 'important' updates. There you will (FINALLY!) find Vista SP2 which includes the hotfixes. Fully tested hotfixes, in fact.

I'm installing it now myself.

Only for 32 bit, I take it? I have yet to see SP2 in the updates, anyway.

I have Vista 32 bit with service pack 1 and SP2 still does not show up in my available Windows updates. Interestingly enough though, SP2 for Office is there. So it must just take some time to propegate to everyone's availability. Not sure if this would include the 64 bit version though.

Well, I just finished setting up a new computer last night with Vista 64-bit and the SP2 update wasn't showing up.

Today when I logged in and checked for Updates it is now showing up for the x64 based systems.

Hopefully, this will take care of the problems. Using the TweakCoH program I was able to preset my graphics enough to get past the loading screen hang up, but kept locking up after just a few minutes of playing.

I'll report back after the update finishes installing and I get to test the game a bit.

EDIT: Apparently I'm going to have to keep digging. Didn't fix my problem at all.

Looks like your area of the IP address range must be in the "Last Area Available" for Wndows Updates on the SP2 files.

Sorry, I'm having to try to use humor to keep from smashing my new computer and 24" HD Widescreen monitor.

Knock on wood, Vista SP2 seems to have solved my crashing problem. Three days now with no crashes.

If it isn't showing up in Windows Update, you can download it from the Microsoft Website.

I posted this in the "other" Vista problems thread but Vista SP2 does not fix this issue. It can not fix this issue as it is a problem with Open GL 3.0 and the CoH/CoV client. NCsoft needs to fix the problem and stop saying it is due to Vista.

I would also like to point out that I have had 3 to 4 days of no problems before this issue comes up again. Then, it may occur several times within an hour or once per day or whatever. This is SP2 is not the "fix" as advertised (so speak).
