Guide: Solving Vista Error 13/14/driver stopped..
Even with the hotfix/Service Pack 2 installed the game is still very much unstable on my 280 card, frequently dropping me. I've tried downgrading my drivers as well but since it didn't seem to help very much/at all I've decided to run on the latest drivers since other games I play seem to do much better with them. Hopefully it'll be fully squashed one day but after about a year with the issue I'm not holding my breath.
This is my card and I have 3 of them in my Reactor Extreme:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280
I have lock-ups ever since I switched to this new rig, every night, several times a night, usually around hour-2 or hour-3, then every other hour. I have done heat-retention and BIOS tests with Hardcore, the makers of this rig, which show no issues,.....this rig can run the original Crisis on max settings (forever), no hiccups. And has absolutely no problems with any other online game that I know of....I play WoW(all expansions), Guild Wars(all parts), and even NWN-2, not a blip all night.
City of Heroes is my most played game, and NCSoft just makes me jump through the same standard trouble-shooting hoops on my ticket. I have yet to see them question why this hasn't been addressed in a CoH patch, by working with NVIDIA and squashing it once and for all.
This isnt precisely a CoX issue. Its a hybrid issue.
You've posted nothing telling me if you worked through my guide including the second part with the suggested drivers.
I suggest you start your own thread if you require further assistance with that information and your cohhelper and hijackthis logs.
And thats outside of this game not being terribly fond of SLI.
Ah, I see this isn't a problem unique to my system. (Granted, I could probably figure that by City of Heroes being the only game I'm currently playing that crashes like this.)
I'm pretty sure it's related because, indeed, I'm running Vista on newer hardware, and the error message says the driver has stopped.
I'll try these fixes out. I must really like this game to install an untested hotfix.
OK Just checking in.....and telling a happy story.
Firstly a big thanks for Tease for getting this thread up and running as its been a real help.
So I am using Vista 32 with a 9800GTX+ card and was having the usual issues. Only things were getting worse. Every time they got worse I uninstalled drivers, used a driver sweeper & tried the latest drivers. Things might be ok for a bit then the crashes would get regular & become a pain in the buttttt.
Finally I decided to unistall, clean sweep, run the correct hotfix (not as simple as it sounds but I read all of the relevant posts & got the right one in the end) and then install the 181.22 drivers. And no I am not running the vista SP2. I think I also had to uninstall separately the Aegea (?) PhysX thingy.
So far no crash after at least 25 hrs of gameplay. Woot!
Thanks again.
I recently reactivated my CoH account and have been crashing ever since. I read here on the forums about the Vista 64 hotfix and the SP2 beta. I went ahead and installed the full SP2 beta and am still having crashing issues. It's completely random, as well. I can stay logged in for 5-10 minutes at max before a driver error 13 or 14 crashes me out. Any tips of suggestions? Starting to get very annoyed. FYI my computer is up to date with the latest drivers.
You can see my logs here
I didn't do anything,,, but back in November/Dec after I13 came out, I would freeze up, lock up or crash every hour or so... then as of last week or so, it just worked itself out.
I tried all the tips and even some outlandish suggestions,,, nothing. Not sure what NCsoft did , but.. it be workin fine now.

Too many alts to count...
Storms rule over all!
Trying to play CoV on an Inspiron 1525 with Vista. Runs for about 45 minutes and then crashes. Updated drivers from Dell's support downloads section, installed Vista SP2 Beta, and all sorts of other things. Here is the info from COH Helper:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Agent, please repost that AND your hijackthis report into a new thread. Your on a mobile integrated driver and I'm not certain you have the same issue going on. Also please elaborate on how you crash. Also be sure your chipset drivers are up to date, and your using the newest video driver for your chip DIRECT from Nvidia - or in the case of your laptop http://laptopvideo2go.com/. Dell rarely has current drivers listed as they change monthly.
I didn't have this issue until my 8600GT died and I replaced it with a 9500GT, and the Valentine's day patch cranked up. I applied the hotfix and I've gone from the black screen where the driver can restart to a blue screen where it doesn't restart.
It seemed like I stayed in the game longer, but on exit from CoH the entire machine rebooted. I don't know if that's better or not; all I know is I'm getting tired of rearranging my desktop icons.

This browser issue is annoying.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's an understatement. When I tried to dl the hotfix (using Firefox), it said it "didn't apply to my system." I went through the process a couple of times to be sure. Then I installed XP and my worries were over. I still say reverting to XP is the most complete fix for this problem. I sure don't miss Vista.

I had these same problems with my 8800GT, but once I applied the beta sp2 to vista, COH has not crashed since, and I am talking at least over 100 hours straight and no crash yet. I would suggest tryng the beta service pack 2 before you do a wipe and go back to xp. Can't lose anything to try that first.
I crash every 30 minutes on Performance Graphic Setting+. I don't lag, but just crash and get the white screen "CoH has stopped working" I DL'ed the hotfix and still the same. I have a generic graphics card on my laptop, & I have Vista. So it might just be that.. I don't crash if the graphics are on Minimum.

I'd downloaded both hotfixes, and had been running fine until the beginning of the month. I downloaded the 182.xx NVidia drivers and started getting the white screen of doooooom a few days later. I rolled back to the 169.xx drivers and still had problems. I also started seeing artifacting in browser windows.
I tried swapping video cards (I was using an 8800GT and put in my old 8800GTS). but my mobo kept beeping at me to tell me that I had no video card installed. So I swapped motherboards.
Artifacting persisted, even during POST using the 8800GT, so I installed the 8800GTS. I'm back in business and running the latest drivers with no crashes.
So, if the hotfixes and SP2 don't resolve your issue, check your hardware.
Can someone PM me please with directions for DUMMIES
I have had the Open GL Disconnect happen for an extended time frame now, and nothing fixes it.
I have Intel Core 2 Duo
Vista 32 Bit
Nvidia 9000 series
I tried to get the hotfix and after following all the steps, it said something like "This doesnt go on this computer" or something to that effect and nothing happens.
And now I am getting these Open GL crashes more and more, pls help.
OK, I don't have a hijackthis to post at this time, but is it at all meaningful that everytime I dc, the character who dc'ed comes up as offline for 49,710 days when I re-log?
Some Established Villains:
Father McKenzie - Fire/Dark, Voltage Adapter - Elec/Nin
Some Established Heroes:
Sous Chef - DB/WP, Frost Advisory - Ice/Kin, Papa Xmas - Ice/FF, Bubbe - Sonic/Kin, Redeker Plan - Arch/Dev, Dr. Duplicitous - Ill/Kin
Bubbe, I'm not sure that its unique. That happens to many characters after many various types of crashes.
If your still crashing after workign through the guide, need both your coh helper report and your hijack this into a NEW thread where the rest of the crew can take a look please.

The time on your machine is behind the time on the server. Therefore, the client thinks you last played that character in the future.
OK, client. I just defeated an archon fake nemilussionist monster av for 5 kabillion xp. Welcome to the future, Client!

"Hey Eckhart! Think about the future!" <BLAM!>
I got what info I could from tech support and am considering this thread's ideas for the 9800 gtx+ fix ,HOWEVER, I am reluctant to do this as I also play Fallout 3 and can deal with (though am annoyed by) the crashing. In other words, I would rather have crashes in City than problems with newer games. Also, it's the same old story that simply, City runs open GL and not direct3d. I can't say whether they (the devs) are planning to integrate direct3d or if it would be like making a whole new game (I am not really sure what the difference is between opengl and direct3d). I will, however, keep an eye out on this thread to see if there is any real updates.
FNORD
CB, there is absolutely no reason you shouldnt AT LEAST install the hotfix. That isnt going to give you issues with other games. It may not solve the problem but it may decrease the frequency.
Also the age of your card matters... if your card is THIS YEARs 9800, that is last years 8800, and the hotfix may FULLY solve your problem. If its a older 9x series however the best you can hope for is less frequency. (Sometimes the hotfix fully fixes it on 9x series, but its often enough I make no promises.)
At least give the hotfix a try.
That said direct3d would be re-coding major portions of the game. That change isnt one that is likely to be coming. Of course theres a chance that that change was in the new engine that Jack ripped off from us, and we'll never get back. Such is life.
Good luck!
I had 19 Open GL error disconnects today. 19 - 19 - 19!
I have done all the stuff asked of me here. I just got updates from Microsoft last night, its becoming a total disaster to play this game.
Like I've said previous...
If you've worked through the guide completely, including the hotfix and a driver rollback and are still suffering this issue... start a new thread with your coh helper and hijack this. Indicate what you've done and whats occuring. However if you have a 9x series card you may be able to reduce it but not cure it.
Glad to hear that it will mostly be gone. Very frustrating to get a new toy and to have issues like this. Glad there are people out there like yourself and the others who have given help to those of us who arent that tech savy! Thanks again and Kudos!
