  1. "And also with you", Father McKenzie.

My favorite toon to play was a fire/dark corruptor based on the priest from the immortal Beatle's song, "Eleanor Rigby". In his early levels, he felt so powerful with his combo of tar patch and rain of fire. In later levels, he felt like every team-mate's best friend with buffs, de-buffs and amazing damage.

I took him through the incarnate trials, and he only got better and better. I will really miss patrolling with my angry, judgemental priest. Bless you (and curse you), Father McKenzie.

Also, when you said I had a chip on my shoulder are *you* claiming omniscience or are you making the point that your personal observations should be discounted as being factually incorrect.

I only ask because I evidently don't know me as well as you know me.

I see. What criteria do you wish to propose that makes the cutoff for this?

    Please show the math.

You caught me--I'm actually not omniscient. I just read words, and the ones you wrote were: "That's a far cry from any justification that elevates any player above us mere peons...". That makes you sound like you have a chip on your shoulder. So do the rest of your posts, like this one:

You say most of your non-numbers stuff is done privately. Ok, fair enough. Who's to say it's to the same quality as your numbers stuff? Who's to say that the devs treat it with the same degree of respect as the numbers stuff? To what degree do they, in fact do so?

Short of you being infallible, which although you skirt the line of claiming, you have never actually claimed, what happens if you and someone else give opposing viewpoints and you're wrong? And yet, your opinion is heeded?

This has nothing to do about you per se, although if you want perceptions about you to be different, you're the only one who can make that happen.

This is more about we and the staff elevating any player above the others.

Should knowledgeable, intelligent players be heard? Without a doubt. Should it come at the expense of everyone else? No.

Truman, commenting on his victory over Dewey said, "Dewey knew more college presidents than taxi drivers, and I knew more taxi drivers than college presidents."

And yet it doesn't mean the mistake isn't yours.

Unless you are actually claiming omniscience?
There you go with the omniscience thing again. Listen, Truman may have known more taxi drivers, but he surely didn't put them in his Cabinet. If the devs solicit opinions from players (and we are not even sure this is the case), I would hope it is only from experienced, knowledgeable, credible people. And, I would hope the devs spend most of their time designing the game, and not spending all day reading these forums to make sure that everyone has an equal say in what happens.

And in terms of me showing a criteria for cutoff and showing the math, I am not going to dictate to the people on this forum what it takes to have credibility. I am not questioning anyone's credibility at this point, except perhaps yours. You are the one who is relentless in chipping away at Arcana's contributions to the knowledge base, and making her seem like she gets more attention than she deserves. And the more you write, the more petty it sounds.

The point that Arcanaville, despite her intelligence, competence, and past record, should either be hired-slash-headhunted by the dev team, perhaps as a consultant, or else treated with no more seriousness than any other player, isn't a bad one. Not because of anything negative about Arcanaville, but because it's bad public relations on the part of NCSoft/Paragon Studios. It's not an attack on her, her credibility, or her contributions.
I completely agree that good ideas can come from people who have not posted much or even played the game for long. But when posters say things like:

The fact that she's a board celebrity (and not entirely unjustified at that) doesn't make her a super-player. It makes her good with numbers.

That's a far cry from any justification that elevates any player above us mere peons and frankly, you should be embarassed to espouse that sentiment.
That is an attack on her credibility, and the poster clearly has a chip on his/her shoulder. For the record, I would prefer that the devs use the limited time they have reading forum posts to prioritize their reading based on established credibility. Arcana has established credibility not only with her prowess with numbers but also with her very sober and straightforward manner of presenting them.

Everyone has the right to come on here and post an opinion, but no one has the right to come here and demand that the devs consider every poster's opinions as equal when some posters (myself included) have contributed nothing to the overall knowledge base in the game and others have spent extensive amounts of time crunching the numbers and writing detailed posts to help other players.

In those last fights, after shutting down the escaping brainwashed resistance, and getting 10/10 on the temp power glowies, it was dissapointing to be simply unable to survive long enough to protect my team.

No I wasn't the only tank there. Yes they had the same problems, or seemed to, Yes even the granite was getting flattened.

Yes I'd had a glass or two of wine. No the granite probably wasn't moving enough. No we probably didn't have a good mix of buffs and debuffs. No not all the team was 100% on the game plan, and the delay in explaining did let mobs build up, but I wouldn't be surprised if all of the above were necessary expectations.

I have only one point of data in each trial.

We all know what one point of data statistically does not make

But if the trend continues, I will have to either re-spec, which seems unlikely to fix the problem or re-roll an over-def shield dark or some such.
Tanks drink wine? Are you sure it wasn't tiger blood?

    Teleport

I really have enjoyed teleport since the cardiac alpha slot. Reducing the endurance cost significantly while increasing range nominally is really nice. That seems to make tp not only a viable travel power (which I think many would agree it wasn't before alpha slotting) but a really great alternative to either fly or super speed.
  6. Here is my active build. Please note that I'm capped to all positions, but Mid's doesn't necessarily show it because of how it calculates Hide. He just dinged 49 on a task force a couple of nights ago, and his build is almost complete. He is a blast to play.

  7. I really, really enjoy my fire/dark. I have worked on my build a great deal over time, and I am happy with at this time. I really urge you to try for the defense cap in S/L, and beyond that, build for accuracy and recharge. I also have cardiac alpha to buff endred, damres, fear, and range. The most pleasant surprise (other than being able to run shadow fall, a shield, super speed, combat jumping, weave, darkest night, and tough, and spam all of the attacks and buffs I need without feeling much of a draw to my blue bar) is the 20% range bonus-- it is beautiful for blaze and fire breath.

I know I have purple sets and the build looks really expensive, but I don't have many purple sets slotted yet. The only set I actually have is Absolute Amazement in Howling Twilight, because that is one power I wanted up and maxed out as often as possible. Amazing on task/strike forces. The rest of them only affect a bit of accuracy and recharge, and really, I don't miss much as it is and I always have one of Blast, Blaze or Ball up at any given time in between casting tar patch/RoF, Twilight Grasp, Howling Twilight, FS or whatever else is needed.

    Here is my build:

  8. I think Monopoly has way too many properties to collect and takes way too long to complete a game. And also, you can't even win without other players in the game. I'm sure it was an instant failure.

Why are so many people already pronouncing this either "impossible" or "unfair" to people who choose to disregard the "Massively Multiplayer" element to the game. The wiki page for City of Heroes starts with this sentence:

"Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is a genre of role-playing video games in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual game world."

Stop criticizing the game for being what it is: a team-based game with a solo alternative.

I appreciate the game being solo-friendly. I have a personal base, and I enjoy soloing a lot of the content of the game. But I have always enjoyed PuG task forces for the extra degree of variability (sometimes good and sometimes bad) that they offer. When the alpha-slot was introduced and Ramiel's arc was tough to complete solo, I did it with a team; and then I helped a bunch of other folks run their Ramiel arcs because it was fun (and the shard drops were pretty good...) I have really enjoyed the WSF runs so far, because SO many people are doing them. They have great rewards, and I learn something every time I run it with a different group.

People who think that doing things by yourself should have an equal or greater payoff than sharing it with another person just don't understand natural selection. That is not how the human race has moved forward, and that is not how MMO's have stayed in existence either. So put your hairy palms on the keyboard and type, "Lvl 50, lf BAF". You just might have fun.
  9. OK, and to be more helpful than my last post...

Praetoria is somewhat difficult to get started in. I tend to think of it as a neat alternative for those of us who are really tired of Atlas Park sewer missions. But that being said, AP sewer missions are a great way to get your power tray set up with the beginning of an attack chain. I HATE villains levels 1-10. I would rather play Praetoria for villains. Even though the missions are harder in Praetoria, I hate navigating through Mercy Island. Between the snakes and the running, I am not sure that I can ever do it again.

More than anything, I would say that I have bounced around a lot of different games in my life. I am in my mid-thirties now, and I have been playing this game pretty consistently since October of 2004. I really like the content, and I have been really pleased with the updates that have come out. I always feel like this game is growing and refining.

You are coming into the game at a more mature point. Most of the wrenching re-balancing has already taken place. I am hoping that you won't need to go through the Enhancement Diversification or severe nerfs to some individual powers (from controller AoE holds to tanker Fire Patch to scrapper regen). You are coming in at a point where it feels like we are ADDING and not subtracting a lot of what people like. Welcome to the Golden Years!

  12. I wish you all the best in getting your NOTW, but I can understand how the game mechanic would not award it to you. Without an incarnate slot, you can't get the incarnate salvage. Once you have done the WTF the first time, you are flagged as already completed challenge. It makes sense, but I just hope that it is not WAI and you get your reward.
  13. This has been the case for me as well. It is the crey scientist mission. Each time I have taken it, it is a cave map with at least two bosses in each spawn (I am running +0/8, no bosses, no AV's). It is ridiculous. It has happened to me twice. Both times I have dropped the mish, and now I just dismiss the tip when I get it.

I actually find the bigger problem with fire, isn't the seemless attacks, but being disciplined enough to not attack again at the end of a cycle and let the dots do their job. I'm sure I waste a lot more endurance than necessary by using an extra attack when not necessary.
This is my current favorite use for the Alpha slot. So far I have the Uncommon 33% endurance/20% range. I have never slotted for range on my attacks, so the 20% range is not affected at all by ED. Most of my attacks are also not slotted for over 70% on end use, so the 33% goes a long way. I now have a corr that has wide cones, deep range and never runs out of endurance.

Those are some pretty high profile, trusted and well-liked people by this community all leaving in short succession. NCSoft has been smart, and if they wanted to cherry pick a group of developers who would entice veteran players on this forum pick up an additional subscription to another game, have the board's rock stars create it.
  19. I am fairly new to the dom community, but I have been enjoying an earth/fire dom a lot recently. She is almost out of Praetoria, and I am working on a long-term finished build for her. Obviously, I would like a perma-dom build, so I have built for +recharge. From what I have read, it looks like I may be a bit over the recharge threshold for perma-dom, so if you have recommendations for changes in slotting that would make the build more well-rounded, that would be great. I have a number of toons that I play actively, so I haven't "purpled out" any of my toons. I try to keep the really expensive sets to a minimum. That being said, if you find some places for a LotG 7.5 that would allow me to build more for +end, +hp or +def, that would be cool.

    Here is the build:

  20. Profanation

    Returning Player

There is a fire earth thread a little further down on this board that has a good discussion of different builds. Here is a link: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=245686

I just started my first serious dom--an earth/fire--and it is seriously a lot of fun!
  21. Add me to the elec/nin love-fest that this thread has become. He is my latest project, and the combination has a lot of synergy. What I love about him is that he feels so "not-scrappery". He really doesn't have an attack-chain--it is completely dependent on the number of mobs, positioning of mobs, and how they can counter his attacks. He feels a lot more strategy based than a scrapper.

Here is my active build, and mine is almost done. Note that he is soft-capped to all positions, but mids won't necessarily show it, because it does not include the 1.88% that Hide grants when stealth suppresses during attack.

    So. Epics.

To get the right bonuses for soft-capping, I can either use Moonbeam (slotted for snipe damage) or water spout (slotted for stun). Is Water Spout a clear winner, or are their situations where BU+Moonbeam would be ideal for a stalker?

I am at a point where I am just short of soft-capped (within a percentage point) from all three positions. The bonuses to both AoE and Melee from Razzle Dazzle and Extreme Measures are the tipping point for the build. I am only at 38 right now (elec/nin), so I have some time to get this right.

I can accept this. Opinions may not be wrong, but they can be crazy. Steadfastly stating something that is an opinion which is based on blatantly false circumstances is part of what defines insanity. Believing that lies are truths or that truths are lies is crazy. And that is my opinion, so I know I am right.
