Please use this thread to discuss the below announcement

As you may be aware, NCsoft recently announced a partnership with TransGaming, Inc. to bring the City of Heroes franchise to the Apple Macintosh. Just like the Good vs. Evil edition of the game, the Macintosh version will include some special in-game items, including:
<ul type="square">[*]Mission Teleporter Power - Players can save time and get right into the action by teleporting directly to their active mission.
[*]Exclusive Valkyrie Costume set - Costume pieces include two varieties of wings, a cape, a skirt/kilt, pants, boots, shoulders, chest, gloves, belts, and helmet with multiple details.[/list]These items will be available separately for purchase in early 2009 for customers who are not playing on a Mac. We’ll have further details of these exciting options, including screenshots, in the near future.

We need your help in testing the Mac version and these new items in a closed beta test that is starting very soon! This closed beta is being made available to existing players of City of Heroes.

If you have a City of Heroes account in good standing, have access to a compatible Apple Macintosh and are interested in participating, here’s what you need to do:

1. Point your web browser to http://eu.cityofheroes.com/macbeta/us/
2. Enter your information

It’s that easy!

From those who enter we’ll be selecting participants. The closed beta of the Macintosh version is starting very soon and we’re looking forward to your participation!

Nice hook for the Mac user! Thanks for making it available as well. The Valkyrie outfit looks interesting.

I find it curious that the Mac beta download is only available from the EU site

*facepalm*

So, out of curiosity, when are you going to stop this policy of "pay us inordinate amounts of money so your character can have another look"? It is my opinion that full size costumes should never require payment like this. Neat helmets, a neat aura, something to that effect, sure, but this is a pay-to-play MMO. We pay for a reason. That reason is to have additions doled out to us at a regular basis, otherwise we're just another free-to-play Korean MMO that'll charge you money to buy in-game items.

Not that it matters, since you'll likely make a pretty penny off it nevertheless, but that's my feedback on the matter.

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

Doh! I just bought a friend of mine a full copy of Windows Vista to install on his new Mac so he could play CoX. It was a wedding present, and it's what he wanted, so I'm not worried about the money spent... but still the timing of this announcement is amusing.

I think it's great that you guys are releasing a Mac version. Also I will gladly pay for the new costume set and extra mission teleport power. Keep up the good work guys!

Think of it as the power that fixes a lot of what's wrong with the game every 30 minutes.

And heck, it'll probably enable a few more seconds of Agent G's wonderful temp power for me.

I remember in COV beta that a glitch allowed you to teleport back to your mission door if you went to your med bay after being defeated.

Lots of us said how this should be a feature not a glitch. I remember it being said back then by the devs that they would try to add it in later as an upgrade you could craft for your base teleporters.

I guess they have decided to make us pay for it instead.

The mac page referenced in the original announcement is one for sign up only. Basically it's a copy of the EU page (we only needed one really) that points to two different databases. A global community we are!

Mission Teleporter? Do want!

Yeah, it's a really lazy power. I like it.

I don't have a Mac, so I can't be a Mac tester, but when the Mission Teleporter/Valkyrie pack (Super Booster II?) is released, I may just have to buy it.

Awesome news! I am tempted to buy a Mac

Nice also to see the pre-emptive notice of later availability for those of us shackled to Microsoft. Darn you cool looking Mac people.

Hmmm. Wonder how cheap I can get a mac that will run the game, maybe something used? Are the laptops at all reasonable?

Well, generally a dying game doesn't expand to more platforms, so I'd imagine this is yet another sign of confidence from NCSoft about CoX's future.

Now that people can't blame all their problems on PvP, we can blame the Mac users!

I would have thought that a power of this nature would have gone with the 60 MONTH: KEY TO THE CITY badge (gold key for heroes, and a crowbar for villians), where u can unlock all kinds of neat things and have the all access pass to costumes, doors, sig "temp" power, and opposite colored fairy/pet,... but I'll take it now... thanks!!

Personally I love the little packages that we can buy for the extra costumes and powers and emotes. As long as they stay in the 5-10 dollar range I don't see how anybody could seriously complain about them.

I don't understand why you're making it even easier to travel to a mission. At least considering giving it a very long recharge timer.

Probably a stupid question here, but if I were to sign up for the Mac beta, would I be able to access the account that I created on my PC on the Mac? Or would this have to be a whole new account?

I would venture to say that you'd be using the same ACCOUNT, but a new CLIENT. Also, it may only work with (The|A) test server, at least initially.

Also, I advised a friend and fellow player (who's also a Mac user) about this... he signed up to help beta-test... and he wanted to let it be known that LINE RETURNS in the Hardware field in the form will throw the errors people have been seeing. So, just let the text wrap, no need to throw line breaks/returns into the fields.

*glares at the webdevs for not using a text parser to strip out/convert non-text characters from form input, there should be NO NEED for people to conform to machine syntax on web forms, ever, these days.*

As to the costume, I think it's pretty savvy of them to include, basically, a free "costume pack." After all, this game isn't new, even though it's expanding to a new market, you have to make the potential player pool sit up and take notice! The only important thing is that those of us who want to will be able to buy the costume pack separately, later, after a window of exclusivity to the new Maccies. : )

Awesome! I recently bought a shiny new MacBook Pro and made it dual boot (via BootCamp) for the sole reason of playing COH. Now I won't have to use Vista anymore! Huzzah!

I get to not use Vista AND you'll give me new costume parts?! I'm so there.

Beta invitation already set.

I vote that the Mission teleporter have a 5 min recharge, else it'll be kind of a moot point if it takes 30 mins. Doing 6 minute scanner mish's isn't uncommon for my scrapper....

This is what i want to know. A friend of mine plays COH in her Mac through Bootcamp and she's dealing with crash issues. Will she have to rebuy the game to get the Mac version or can she just download the mac client from her account page?
