Discussion: NCsoft Acquires City of Heroes!

::stuff about purchasing::

Shoot some ideas, and remember to keep it realistic.

Personally, I agree about those who have had it for a long time. I bought CoH about two weeks ago, played for a couple days, realized I needed CoV to get the full package (bases, etc), so I went and bought CoV. Now a week or so after buying the second half of the game, they announce that you only need to buy one to get both.
What we don't know is pricing on the new "combo-COH". Will the new retail version cost the same as CoH/CoV cost individually before, or will it cost as much as CoH+CoV?
If I were to choose some form of "compensation", I would say, put the difference in prices between old and new towards my game account subscription. And if they are feeling generous, give some influence to those who have had both versions for a longer period of time. This way the company keeps the money I've paid them, I feel good about getting something for the change in price and long time players don't feel left out.
For those of you saying this is a stupid complaint or request, look at what happened with the IPhone. Apple dropped the price by 200$ about two months after release. They refunded the difference to those who had just bought it (within 2 weeks IIRC) and gave a 100$ credit to their store to those who had purchased it for a longer period of time.
Oh boy.
I guess after disappointing North American sales of Lineage II, Auto Assault's colossal failure, and the six-year money sink better known as Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, someone in Korea wanted to hang on to at least one title that's proven successful.
I'll be holding my breath on this one. Oh yeah, d000000m!

Additionally they appear to be lining up with the idea that there competition is Sony not Blizzard , this means that they want a nice collection of core games to offer for a station pass type arrangement.
[/ QUOTE ]
NCsoft stated this aspiration (to be betetr than Sony) maybe 2 years ago. I'll have to dig through my analyst stuff to find an exact quote, but they have viewed SOE as their benchmark competitor for as long as I have held stock and been following them closely.

Too funny...
Why exactly does anyone owe you for your own decision making process?
So if you buy something in a store and it goes on sale two years later...They owe you a refund?
By that logic you were owed money long before now as CoH and Cov dropped in price from when they were first launched..
I guess if you knew the price would go down you wouldnt have spent your hard earned money on it...
Ok if you want compensation so badly give up any of the slots you used in upgrading any prestige or base building youve done since you purchased it...because you dont get it both ways..
[/ QUOTE ]
They warned us about the cost of the server transfer because of the possibility of server-less environment, this is no different than that. Since we got no warning something like this would happen we deserve some form of compensation for buying both games. All I am asking for is 1 free month. I dont think it is that hard to ask.
Also if lighthouse is reading this, what about folks who can find just CoH or CoV after say issue 11, if they apply the code do they still get both games then?

Does this have a significant impact for us users? Will we still keep the same dev team?
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think I can stand to lose any of the devs.
I'm still not quite over the loss of Cuppa

Out of curiosity, to the doomsayers, knowing that almost all the current devs are still going to be working on the game, what brings on the doom? I'm honestly not seeing a reason for it.
[/ QUOTE ]
For starters? This statement.
[ QUOTE ]
At this time, were not quite ready to disclose longer term plans.
[/ QUOTE ]
Just because they've hired the team now doesn't mean anything is going to permanently be that way. I've -never- seen a situation in MMOs where a change in ownership ever was a good thing.
For people also saying that this is a good thing because "Cryptics portion of your monthly payment can now go towards the development of the game" need to realize and remember that there's really no financial reason nor obligation for NC Soft to do such a thing.
And also, NCSoft were the ones that decided to sack the expansion box and instead "spread" the content over multiple issues. While a lot of people were convinced this was purely for the good of the playerbase, there's a lot of reasons it was -not- a good thing.
[ QUOTE ]
Anyway, I can't believe I haven't seen anyone ask this most important question yet: Even though Statesman is no longer involved in CoH, will he still be able to post here? And if so, will his name still be red? Sleep-deprived minds want to know!
[/ QUOTE ]
That's a good question. Several of the people that have left (Cuppa, Arctic Sun) can still post here, but not all of them, the original Lord Recluse the most conspicuous there.

Hm. Anyone know if COH-only accts have COV access yet? The post said "check it now and see", and I checked... and I see nada. =/
[/ QUOTE ]
I'll have a more detailed post about the short term goodies in a few.
To clarify here:
* Active accounts who don't have CoH or CoV should be hooked up within 24 hours.
* The Prestige Grant and the Debt Wipe will be done after Issue 11 launches. We will announce the date well ahead of time so you can bulk up your SG roster and have fun gathering some debt
[/ QUOTE ]
quick question on the bonus 20k prestige. Will it work like a signing bonus thing or a one time boost so that if players get kicked or quit after the 20k boost will we loose that prestige or still have it?
will the wiped out debt go towards the debt badge or just be cleaned out. Either way its awesome.
Ladies and gentlemen, er, we've just lost the picture, but, uh, what we've seen speaks for itself. The CoX Franchise has been taken over -- "conquered", if you will -- by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive development team or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here.
And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted Supergroup Leader , I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

Yay, i guess, i'm really wondering if i'll notice
. . . .Can I have my money back for purchasing either CoH or CoV since you're in such a giving mood. . .
well, we'll have to see how this all plays out and for all you people whining about compensation, shut it, there was no way of knowing this would happen, sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and take a loss.
I'm still waiting on JRanger to chime in on this, but let me see if I can explain it in another way to help everyone understand. I'm going to use BillzBubba as my partner for this example.
BillzBubba and I own a business together as partners. For a few years we go back and forth about what's the best decision to grow the company. We each bring new ideas to the table and bat them around and some move forward when we both agree, and others get knocked down by one of us. One day Billz comes to me and says I want to buy you out so that I can grow the company like I want. It will allow changes to make the business better happen faster, and all the proceeds the business earns won't be split between us, but go to furthering the company. I say, "OK, I've got this other business that I want to work on anyway, so pay me 'X' Dollars." Billz says ok, and we part ways. Billz goes forth to grow the business in an awesome way like he would unhindered by our meetings to see if I think they'd work.
So this is like NCSoft & Cryptics separation.
Now Billz, where is my 'X' money?

Full Access to City of Heroes and City of Villains®
All players with City of Heroes retail* accounts will now have access to City of Villains, and all City of Villains retail* accounts will now have access to City of Heroes. Players that didn't previously have access to "the other side" will find that they do now. Just log in to check it out!

Evey thing sounds great but kinda feel a little shammed on this part since I paid for both games and now players who just paid for one will get both. IMO they should do something to also thank those who purchased the two games. Some ideas should include more Char slots per server for those who own both games. Just my two cents but over all, Keep up the great work!!
*EDIT*

Sounds harsh don't you think? If they want to reward all players fairly, then this is something they should take into consideration. And I am not just "whining" but also am offering an idea they can implement to make "all" of the players happy. In the end it's all about great costumer service and keeping your entire pool of consumers happy not just a select few.
Were I them (and I'm not), I'd leave the single-code subscribers (CoH or CoV) with 8 character slots per server, and then sell additional slots (like NCSoft does for Guild Wars). If they charge $5 per extra slot, then having both game codes is worth $20 if you stick to one server as many do. Last I actually saw a standalone CoH or Cov, it was $19.99. Sounds about right to me.
If you play on all the servers, then it's worth $220!

What are you, French?
This is sooo cool...Wish I hadn't wasted money on the CoH account I bought in the spring though. Not that I use it anyways. CoV is betterrrr.
But, Sweet!
Thank you Powers that be!!
I know people were complaining about 'how can a development company do more than one MMO of the same genre at a time (i.e CoH/V and MUO)?', but.... *sigh*.

How about free server transfers for those people who already have both games?
How do I get on CoH?
I have a paid CoV account, but whenever I use the CoH Updater, and choose a server, it just takes me into CoV..
Save City of Heroes!

A pragmatist. Someone who knows that screaming and begging and pleading and going through denial is going to change things back.
Do you have something wrong with people from France, or people who speak the language?
Hmm... Now this makes me wonder if I have to buy my friend the Good vs Evil edition for Christmas Afterall... *Scratches head*

If memory serves, it's already downloaded into your system (even if it isn't, it'd download automatically), and this would just activate it.
Seem like a very positive change for CoX!
Our monthly subs will go to one company not two as it does now, so that essentially means more money and resources for the game itself! The devs only working on one game should result in faster QoL issue resolution and possibly quicker expansions!
All good stuff!
