I blame Joss Whedon. Hollywood Creativity is a constant, and he's hogging a lot of it.

What? You got a better theory that explains both terrible remake after terrible remake and George Lucas?

As a 30+ year Iron Man fan, I would gleefully pay 1000-1200 PP for a new AT structured like a Kheldian, with an offensive Weapon Systems set and a defensive/utility Power Armor set.

Bundle it with a power armor focused costume set, and I'm in for 1200-1600 PP.

If it's an AT that lets you choose different power sets AND has new sets included in the purchase price, then I could see myself paying up to 1600 PP, but probably no more.
I'll add my voice to these price points. 1200-1600 PP for a new AT with at least one new category of primary or secondary and a few included sets, even if not all available at launch, seems fair.

If a new AT uses existing power sets in new combinations, it seems like it would be a bit less work to develop, though balancing and proliferation may put lie to that notion. 800 feels right.

If a new AT lets me be more flexible in combining existing powerset categories, then I would pay more than 800. I'd pay 1200 easily, probably more since I bet it would require a lot of new plumbing in the character creator, to choose from an array of offensive sets (including ranged, melee, or control) or defensive/utility sets (including buff/debuff, melee, or "manipulation") as my primary, and then either defensive/utility or offensive (whichever I didn't choose for my primary) as my secondary.

Now I want to play a Pistol/Shield hero.

I think right now, they're like kids with a new toy, OCD kids with a very complex toy that came with a big book of instructions. If I were that kid, I'd try out every step in the instructions to make I didn't miss any awesome stuff the toy could do.

The gang almost certainly has access to NCSoft's body of market data and best practices from other games, especially from the Asian MMO market where microtransactioning is a much more mature practice, well accepted by the player population. I don't blame them a bit for trying everything out per the book before twiddling the bits to dial in a good body of best practices for our specific community of players.

Maybe in the long run they'll decide to abandon limited availability items, or choose to limit the practice to seasonally-specific bundles, or not.

Myself, I'm pretty happy either way. I loaded up my account with 9600 PP back in September, so I just buy whatever I want pretty much as soon as I see it. Still have 7K-odd PP left, and when it's gone, I'll just do it again. I recognize that not every can throw $100 at CoH whenever they like.

Having made those points, IN THIS SITUATION, I feel the limited time offer makes no sense. We're not talking about a Santa suit, a Pilgrim outfit, a Jack-O-Lantern head - we're talking about street clothing. These are items that would make sense to wear 365 days of the year.
There is a growing body of research in the microtransaction market that indicates that limited-time offers, both in terms of pricing and availability, are actually highly effective. Pretty solid numbers too, not just ephemeral trends subject to interpretation.

That said, good sales numbers do not necessarily add up to customer satisfaction, depending on how you measure such an elusive quantity. Survey results are mixed, but it's hard to credit the negative survey results in the light of sales figures. Anecdotal evidence tends to be much more negative about limited-time availability and is much easier to credit, but not for the right reason. Statisticians know that anecdotal evidence, especially from a source like a user forum, usually suffers from a strong self-selection bias, but we humans tend to give great credence to information imparted as a story. It's how we think and learn. So it's very easy to be swayed by well-delivered anecdotal evidence, even though in the cold hard light of reason we should not.

Thankfully, I've only studied the problem, aided by occasional access to proprietary data, and never had to participate in the decision-making. It's not an easy problem, and I don't envy anyone whose job it is.

    We can do this.
  13. I think my yearly renewal hits during December. (I'll check when the Accounts page is avialable again.) Is that good enough to get the bonus months, or do I need to explicitly cancel and re-up?
  14. There's First World problems, and then there's Paragon City problems.

The Positron Task Force was only slightly shorter than Doc Q, ran you all over multiple zones (without travel powers) and usually required 2 days to complete.

There was no such thing as Invention Origin or Wentworths and Single Origins were the sought after enhancement in game (at least until later 40s when you could head to the hive and battle to obtain Hami-Os. A time when telling someone your character posssessed 1 million in INF was highly impressive and players in their 30s were still buying Double Origin and Training origin enhancers just to have SOMETHING in the slots!

Ahhhh .. back before vet rewards when the only way to respec your character if you messed up was to wait till level 24 and go run a respec trial.

There were no radio or newspaper missions and the ONLY way to level, outside of street hunting, was to run missions from contacts.. contacts that almost always sent you off to another zone to zomplete their tasks .. then you ran back so they could send you off to another zone on the next one! [special note .. see part about no travel powers before 14 above. Run here means ... RUN and usually through areas with street villains conning purple]

Ahhh a real good one .. Back when people begged to join SGs because they had teleporters that could get you to other zones faster!

and here's one that isnt even very old.. Back when you had to wait until 25 level to obtain an Ouroborus Portal and use it as another means to transport quicker.

lol Okay now for something more on the topic of the thread. I have seen but have yet to try this new feature... does seem like it would make it simpler to gain access to a new contact and begin running their missions.

How are players expected to do any research prior to purchase if the developers are not going to disclose the information?
I would guess that the timing was chosen to enable the excited reader to take immediate action and buy the powerset, rather than have a day or several to think about it and maybe cool their jets.

I showed 'em. I bought the set before reading the write up. So there. :P
  16. Couldn't wait to accumulate the required PP via my VIP freebies, so this set made me spend money. 9600 PP should tide me over for a while, unless the current cadence of new-stuff releases is maintained. If so, I'm in a lot of trouble.

Coupled with Electric Armor on a Brute, Street Justice looks good on a speedster themed toon, and Combo Builders/Finishers + Fury is remarkably vicious.

    No panel at PAX?

Elephant & Castle is a good pub, but yeah it's not a great venue for the CoH meet'n'greet. It's too too too flaming hot in that basememt room when full of people. Maybe if we could take over the outdoor seating, but that's unlikely to fly with the management.

How about somewhere with open outdoor seating (barring rain) and we just crowd everyone else out?

Just give me tintable Powerslide or a Superspeed or Ninja/Beast Leap clone that uses its animation and effect (maybe with a trail), and I will consider the Ice Slide block checked, along with Fire Slide, Energy Slide, Water Slide, etc...

  20. I am immensely irritated that the costume powers de-toggle my stealth powers (except Hide). The slotted-up Shadow Fall on my fender would make it much easier to cope with all the NEnergy damage-dealing ToT beasties. Guess I need a ToT team for her.

I don't recall it working that way previously, but I guess it's never been important before.
  21. Mine took a little time too but after a few minutes gave me an update which is now applying. Patience, Grasshopper.
  22. I'm sorry, I try to be reasonable, but whoever decided to close the NCSoft store for maintenance on a holiday evening needs to be fired. Then shot. Then burned.

    Have a great day!
