Since we'll have some extra time to kill, any recommendations from the locals for eating establishments or things to see and do would be most welcome! And if anyone is interested in getting together before the meet 'n greet for lunch or dinner Friday and/or Saturday, please do let me know!

[/ QUOTE ]
Some of my personal favorites include Kerbey Lane and Trudy's, both of which have locations within just a few miles of D&B. I'll be at work Friday night, but if there's a pre-meet meetup Saturday I could probably show up.

I'd gladly throw my Ohioan barbeque up against Texan barbeque. Sorry, Texans, you don't have the market cornered on understanding flame and spice.

O rly? Which of the major styles does Ohio favor? If it's some variant, it's certainly not publicized well enough to be seen on the regular BBQ TV shows. I understand that Ohio is the seat of the Five-Way Chili Heresy, though....

I hear if you bribe them with foods not found in California they will come. But try finding a food not found in California.

As a person who moved to Austin, TX from the Bay Area in CA I can tell you this: I didn't know what real barbeque was until I moved out here.

We should send them a teeny tiny box of Texas Barbeque and tell them they can't have more unless the come to Austin.

(Works both ways, though. No one out here can make really good Sourdough bread, either. Sure, they LABEL things Sourdough... but it's not. It's a mere facsimile.)

A "Meet & Greet" might be different, and there is at least a small chance I'd go to one locally. I hate travelling and dislike crowds -- not a great combination. Makes me a bit anti-social.

[/ QUOTE ]

*shudder* ick, crowds. I hear ya on that one. I need my personal space, take that away from me and you get one tripped out Hex.

Besides, EvilGeko and Angry-Citizen would kidnap me, lock me in a room and do horrible things to me.

I wonder if they'd charge admission for that. I'd pay.

Sounds like me IRL. Odd that I pick up an MMO that makes me travel to heck and back.

Maybe it's because of this intraweb thing, if the people here start to get on my nerves, I can literally turn them off.

I said MY barbeque. I'm from Ohio, hence it's MY Ohioan barbeque. I don't subscribe to schools of thought when it comes to barbeque, as that leads to stagnation. Take from here, borrow from that, adjust by using this method...

I grill. It's what I do.

No. Party in Austin. Judas needs to come and BBQ for us.

[/ QUOTE ]Decent Mexican

[/ QUOTE ]

Having just got back from Fremont, CA a week or two ago, I can attest to this statement. The Mexican food there was the blandest garbage I've ever tasted.

[/ QUOTE ]

Fremont is to far north for real Mexican food. Hard to find real Mexican food much farther north than Riverside.

Point of clarification: Tex-Mex is not Mexican food. I've spent much time in Mexico and Texas, they are different.
I will concede that there probably is no real Tex-Mex in California.

Doubt I'll be able to go, but just wanted to mention that Trudy's kicks [censored]. Of course, Austin is kind of like the G-Spot of the Texas Nation and anyone that gets the opportunity should head on down.

Dave and Busters in Austin. Here's a map - it's basically on the NW corner of 183 and MoPac. The intersection is a little odd if you're not used to it but if anyone has questions about how to get into that particular corner - it's not always obvious - let me know.

OK, so let's just say, hypothetically purely hypothetically, this were to happen. What sort of admission fee would you pay?

I'm a Texas native as well, born and raised in San Antonio and currently residing there. I lived in Austin for a little while, neat place, but for the traffic.

I'll be attending the meet'n'greet, but I doubt many people would know me, either personally or via my in-game persona.

Sadly, I'm not making the Meet & Greet as I have a play to perform that night.
However, I do recommend Pok-E-Jo's for lunch. I eat at the one off of Great Hills Trail on Friday afternoons. If you tell me you'll be there, I'll save you a seat. And that's "you" anybody.

And that word is what makes all the difference. Grilling is not barbeque. It's good, sure. But it's not the same as meet slow-cooked at a lower temperature with wood instead of coal.
