I remember those days, when this supposed Eastgate was little more than distant hills seen beyond the warwalls and you couldn't help but run through Kings Row without seeing folks on broadcast shouting:

"Where do you find Circle of Thorns in here?"

As if the large green plumes of smoke from the rooftops wasn't enough of a give away.

I remember when folks used to sweep through the hazard zones in vast teams herding up spawns and then blitzing them with AoE hits which could take out 20-30 enemies at once. It was even more fun to have a high fire tanker go running around the lake and herding them into a pile only to have everyone laying into the mass of enemies for a crap load of exp.

These were the days when tankers were considered gimp if they couldn't herd over 100 enemies, when ice armor could only have one toggle on at a time which was the same as rock armor with the exception that rock armor made it look liek you were encased in poo and fire tankers were considered gods.

How times change.

[/ QUOTE ]

haha those were the days, my poor non travel power scrapper couldn't find his way up to the top of the buildings,

Perez Park was a blast too (hydras!), and kinetics sucked and Force Field was the best!

LOl Yeah i remember finally getting to steel Canyon with my first blaster. My 1st mission (soloing) i walked into a building and there was the biggest robot i had ever seen and he fired and i died!!
Can't say how many times i died and tried again and again and again. Funny thing was once i killed him the rest of the mission was nothing :-)

Now I look back (now lvl 50 for almost two years now) and think that "Big" Robot was just a minor clockwork boss

I remember what is it and why its is not attacking us? Great conversation of 'You poke it. I'm not poking it, you're the blaster, hit it with something at range. Nuh uh, it'll sqiush me, debuff it or something.'

Hmmm, lesse. I remember...

The first time I got Knockout Blow. Here's the windup and the pitch....he's outta here!

Being level 4, standing at a Freedom Corps agent inside City Hall, when some lvl 50 scrapper does a run by and drops a lvl 47 SO in my lap. I was going back and forth from shop window to enhancement menu, so I barely even saw him. I carried that around for at least 5 levels before selling it.

Getting Hover and slooooowly going up to sit on the shoulders of M1.

Cutting through a tunnel in Steel Canyon to have a couple of Outcast LTs tag team mud pots on me. My first chain-mez-death.

My first AV...my tank survived two team wipes, and kept going while my team would rebuild themselves. The Blaster kept spamming me with teleport requests, and I'd keep declining. "Just come on back when you're ready." Mind you, I couldn't even dent the AV on my own...it was a complete draw.

Babbage, Winter Lords, and other giant beasties. I'd think we need more giant monsters scaled down for lower levels, like Atlas and Galaxy.

The Rularuu invasion. "Oh God, more giant eyeballs! Run!"

Gah! Bad memories back in beta of Shadow Fall + Hover = no movement at all!

I was kind of stuck down in the bottom of Faultline. I bugged it, of course.

Still here, even after all this time!

I remember during beta I was running from some mobs in KR trying not to incur debt which at that time was a way of life for scrappers when I spotted a dumpster and jumped in. To my surprise the dumpster confounded the chasing mobs who could not target me while I hid there. I rested and jumped out and defeated them. As a joke I posted on the beta boards a "Nerf Dumpsters" post and was immediately pounced on by all the dumpster diving herders (a technique I had not heard of yet as I was new in beta) who told me to shutup as this was one of their best tactics.

I remember when all my friends wondered what a Fire imp might look like.

I remember waiting for someone on Live to hit 32 and run back to IP so we could see Fire Imps before deciding if we should re-roll as a controller.

I remember we were tired of runners and not being able to attack them as scrappers.

That's not how I remember it. I remember them deciding that players are too stupid to have freedom of choice, and thus scrapping the whole system that offered that in spades. That was when balance first began to trump fun.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, I think that's pretty close to what happened.

Basically as I understand, the Devs reallized a careless player could easily make a character that was so gimped it would be lucky to solo a single cog at level 1 and have any success, where as the inteligent players would go with the FoTM and be unstopable gods by comparisen.

They felt the way it worked before was too broken and had too many things that could go wrong with building your character, making it either over powered, or just plain pathetic. Think along the lines of Superman versus The Flea in that wrestling cartoon on cartoon network. (I can't seem to remember the name of the show...)

[/ QUOTE ]

That's basically what I meant...in not so many words =^.^=

He worded it in a far less inflamatory way than you did. Basically the logic, which is accurate, was that too much freedom of choice leads people to either gimp themselves or overpwered "templates". It's far easier to keep things in balance with less free choice. The trick is finding a balance between the two ends of the spectrum.

I remember when timed missions ended when you clicked on your contact.

I remember 3 Dark Servants. I remember when he was a surly draftee who'd fear mobs and refuse to move. I also remember he didn't last 4 minutes.
I remember when Dark Miasma was broken. When Tar Patch only slowed mobs if you placed it right at their feet.

I remember another animation for Twilight Grasp. I remember when Howling Twilight was the "...are you ready to double your debt?" button unless you loaded it with heal and end enhancements and you chased it with a Twilight Grasp.

I remember broken Task Forces (the reason why Guapo missed Positron's).

I remember 1acc 5 dam for my defender. Hell, for a time I had Moonbeam 6 slotted for damage.

I remember levelling up a DM/Reg scrapper and when I dinged to 27 the nerf to IH was already in place.

I remember using my level 40+ to buy the non-power of 10 enhancements from my high level contacts to trade with SG mates and fully slot my alts (level 12 with 15 DO's...we ruled the Hollows).

I remember when Fly had a monstruous acc penalty.
I remember herding with Hurricane and spending 10 minutes to kill grey hellions with Freezing Rain.

I remember CoT portal missions...closest thing CoH ever came to a honest-to-God Danger Room session.

I remember the first Respec trial. My Dark wasn't broken then, but I wanted to get rid of Black Hole. 2 defenders, 3 tankers and 1 blaster and we couldn't survive the last 3 waves of freaks.

I remember Positron's TF sending you to Boomtown where your level 10 couldn't go.

I remember contacts sending you to Terra Volta where you couldn't get in.

Pre-Mission slide, I remember running out of contact by level 37 and the Sewer Trial coming to my rescue.

I remember a lot.

I will always remember....

You have 3 minutes. Run. A claw/invuln scrapper tanking an entire CoT prison room full of Malta so his team could retreat only to watch them come in and a cataclysm of AoEs firing off in quick succession.

For the love of god if you have inspirations give them to me! A single Spine/SR scrapper. Another malta story. 9 +1 bosses. And he lived where the stone tank and other 6 members of the team died. Long enough for them to slowly rez, rest and regroup.

Wait...there was an AV in there? An all Radiation Emission team of controllers and defenders eating through the Clockwork King in less than a heartbeat. Low damage ATs...haha.

How many Unbound Nictus can kill me? Claw/invuln scrapper. The answer by the way was 89 before they finally slowed him to a halt with everything.

Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I remember...

... thinking MMO's were for geeks and a waste of money.. until my friend showed me the character creator at a party of his. I left the party shortly after that and bought CoH. After installation, immediately going back out to buy a graphics card so I could run the game.. and then getting a 1 meg memory upgrade the next day.

... thinking hover was the perfect power for my first character.. a fire tank that never got past lvl 14 in a year and was finally deleted... but he had an AWESOME costume.

... trying to jump up the sides of buildings in KR to get the darn CoT's at night. (I still can't run up fire escapes without falling off.)

... the first giant monster I ever saw and defeated.. Adam.. thinking wow.. glad I have flight!

... my first TF was a screaming success because the leader knew how to lead!

... the invasion of the overpowered Eyeballs with teeth!

... you could fail the cape mission 5 seconds after getting in the door.

... the bug that would allow you to create an invisible character.

... wetting myself the first time I set off my blaster's lvl 32 nuke!

... back when most of the zones had multiple instances and making sure the whole team knew which zone we were all exiting into.

... seeing a DE Quartz that was a Lieutenant and thinking how can something like that be given a rank.. then seeing a Sky force field generator that was also a Lieutenant.. Both in Steel Canyon..

I remember the mobs running in circle around the sewer entrance just off of the KR tram.

I often stop and read the plaque just to remind me.

I remember the AP superspawn That was something else.

I remember waiting 1 hour on the pile in outbreak waiting for a mob to spawn.

I remember when you could not adjust your difficulty level but would get +4 bosses in solo mission.

I remember trying to explain why the regen was not as weak as everyone thought.

I rembember when the changed IH from a click to a toggle ( yep not the other way around)

Riktis standing in Steel with us not able to attack them and them not able to attack us.

I remember the no inertia reset TP.

etc...

early Beta, Sates on a lvl 11 ar/dev blaster, me on a claws/regen scrapper, goofing around in steel canyon and getting told how bad we sucked, and then another one in the same group telling me why was I wasting my time on anything but a blaster, when that is all the Dev's liked since the game's real name was City of Blasters.

The first time Galaxy City was open after it was added. Jumped off of the walkway around a building by the Equinox Marker into a spawn of what had to have been 10 or so LvL 22 Abominations in their original look who all preceded to puke on. My wife called my brother and had to ask..."12+ years of university and puking zombies?"

Seeing MacAllen on what was the toon's name, Pinball (?) for the first time after seeing him talk about it.

Insane Cow Posse in the hide or flesh by Posi statue

Early Beta... getting TeleK'd up a stature somewhere but whom I can't remember.

The first time I was the word Critical going up over something's head and I was the cause!

Ahh, I miss Sabercat's dev tracker *sniffle*.

I don't miss trying to window hop to the top of the KR buildings for those CoT spawns.

I remember the first time I saw phantom army, and promptly abandoned my level 16 fire controller (who eventually became my only 50) to roll up an ill/rad since they got pets earlier.

I remember the first time I saw propel, and thought it was cool, and the first time I tried it on a character, and realized it only looked cool. (Luckily it has since improved!)

I remember my highest level beta char - a level 12 grav/storm who desperately wanted to be a blaster.

I remember when freezing rain was a kick $%% damage power.

Oo...and I think I remember when rains didn't used to cause fear. Could be wrong on that one though.

I remember when Bone Daddies were -scarey- they would hit you with Shadow Maul and it was GAME OVER.

I remember when exploding zombies and cot mages meant-GAME OVER-. God those mages were aweful, insta death for many. No interrupting them either.

I remember the beta players telling the dev team that perhaps Hasten was overpowered and the responce was "Working as intended". Well we all know what happened later.

I remember the huge outcry that was the Purple patch. People where SO angry they could not attack +6s and stuff.

I remember slotting Cobra Strike for damage in Beta and thinking the damage sucked.

I remember whining on the Beta boards that MA didn't have build up! (Why nobody said "hey dumby take focus chi" I don't know).

COT in KR? Forget it.

No menu on the trams, they each chained to another stop.

I remember seeing a fire tank in action for the first time in Faultline and my jaw hitting the ground. The numbers floating up in the air filled my screen, I was totally flabberghasted at the raw power.

Unyielding=Unmoving (my favorite paradox combo was trying to explain combat jumping and Unyielding).

COT ghosts had phase shift.

Spines were ugly... and still are.

Earth tankers were walking Poo. Still kinda are.

Katana had the same animations and stuff as Broadsword.

Global defence followed by E.D. (low eb of the game for me, nearly left))

lots and lots of changes.

I earned my wings and Samurai armor!

I remember dying in Perez... and being transported to the Founder's Falls hospital.

I remember when 40 was the highest you could attain.

I remember no additional costumes.

I remember Giant Monsters with levels.

I remember someone promising actual Hellions vs. Skulls gang warfare in Perez.

I remember running for my life after taking the KR exit in Galaxy at level 2... and promptly running knee-deep into a large group of Vahzilok. And being cut down just as promptly.

I remember when I used to look at the Vahz and be truly weired out by 'em.

I remember taking on Dr. Vahz for the first time. ZOMG.

I remember friends deciding which server they were going to start on. I remember losing contact with a few of 'em.

I remember that the only good thing about being unemployed was being able to make the beta playtimes.

I remember the trick where you could log out before the playtime ended, then log back in and play with the costume editor to your heart's content.

I remember spending three hours of my first day in beta just in the character creation menu, before deciding to finally "just make something" and try and play for that last hour.

I remember thinking MMOs were a joke.

I remember selling a large chunk of my personal posessions in late April '04 in order to secure CoH, a time card and a guide.

I also remember being frustrated because said time card was a week late in arriving to stores.

I remember using my beta forum name until they forced me to make a new one for my live account.

I remember that it took me until the 24th of last month to finally get a level 50, because I still love that costume creator too much.

I remember why I love this game, and, above all, that's what I try to never forget.
