I remember carefully making my first character, after going through ALL the ATs and powersets, and ALL the options in the character creator, only to enter Outbreak and be amazed by all these other new heroes. And I could shoot fire from my hands. I COULD SHOOT FIRE! It was awesome with raisins.

I remember when you could not select your destination at the tram and had to go to each individual destination on the route. You had to zone 5 or six times to go from Atlas to Galaxy.

I remember taking two days to complete the 'defeat 10 clockworks (or was it 5?)' because there were no instanced zones and everyone had that mission.

I remember painfully rerolling my level 8 defender in beta because it was just so obvious I was trying to play a blaster.

I remember getting flight... and beta was over the next day

I remember not being there for the Rikti invasion, because I went with a friend to see Prince in concert (SO worth it !)

I remember skipping smoke grenade because it didnt seem all that useful

I remember when you only got one costume. One. You youngsters owe us big for that one.

I remember when I first discovered this game, and how archetypes weren't even thought of. Free form power buys were the name of the game. I would have loved that.

I remember my first four hours in beta. that was about one hour of play time and three hours in the character creator. Wow was that awesome! Still is the best in the business.

Regen had to survive 28 levels using Fast Healing, Dull Pain and Reconstruction. No Heal in integration. Of course, it made getting to IH that much sweeter. Still bitter about the IH conversion to a click.

Kids now have it easy.

Bah!!! Back in my day, all we had were zeros and ones. We had to string them together and decode them on the fly to even play the game. Some days, the servers would run out of ones, and we'd have to figure out code only using zeros.

And we liked it!

In fact, we were happy for the zeros we had - we didn't complain about running out of ones. Not like the kids these days and their fancy pictures.

We got stuck in the ice after the Winter Lords, and we liked it. We thanked the devs for making the ice that trapped us in the lakes. The lakes made out of zeros and whatever ones were available after the servers had Atlas built. Dang giant spherical hero, that Atlas. Always getting carried around on the backs of other heros. Never understood why he sometimes just rolled around like that. You'd think there was a hamster inside the big globe that is Atlas. But no - hamsters take too many ones. So you have that non-hamster giant sphere Atlas being held up by some generic hero with all those muscles. Takes a lot of ones to draw that, it does. And that never left enough for our precious lakes.

But we liked it. Liked our zero filled lakes from which we could look up at the giant sphere Atlas, taking up all our ones.

And the other reason all the ones ran out some days was the servers had to hold a reserve of ones to taunt us with its "J00 r d3d. T3h freak tank pwnzr3d j00!! 1-Shot FTW!!!1!eleventy!!1vWbug!!" And every time the server said we got 1-shotted, it pulled from its reserve. But we were thankful to even get hit. Not like all you kids these days. Sometimes, we'd even try to rez after the 1-shotting, and we'd die again before all our toggles were turned back on. And we got extra debt for that. The server would actual invent the binary 2 just to double our debt. But we were happy. Happy for the debt. And we liked it.

I remember being pissed when they took the skin-colors out of the costume pallet... because i'd use the SG color options to make my secret ID costume... Basicly you just hid masks and stuff with skin-colors and then used the colors given to you by the SG to make your hero costume appear... But then they killed it...

Ofcourse in the end we got something better... Icon...

With all the perez nostalgia, I'm surprised no one has mentioned what might have been my first real w-t-f moment in the game, when I saw what I eventually learned was a rad defender herding the entire zone to the Atlas gate, and broadcasting "free XP at the Atlas gate!"

And of course, everyone familiar with rad goes charging into the neutered crowd, and everyone not familiar with rad runs screaming for their lives, and I'm flying overhead going "what the hell have I spent my 40 bucks on?"

Awesome. Wish we could still have things like that happen. I only got in at I4 (I was here close to when the forums opened, mind, but a minor change in the processor requirements between then and Beta (which I had gotten an invite for) meant I had to wait until I got a new computer to get the game) but I saw similar dogpiling in Perez Park a few times. I got to do it once with my Invulnerability tanker before they killed the Aggro cap. That was truly super.

Ah, such sweet nostalgia. So much of this has brought up many great memories, so here's a few of mine:

I remember chasing the atlas blimp...with hover. I then remember finding out you couldn't land on it anyway .

I remember having to compete with 3-4 other teams for hydra spawns.

I remember when the best two places to find a team were the atlas gate in perez park..... and the atlas hospital.

I remember going to the exit point of the train, thinking it must be broken. Then going to my destination the long way and dying somewhere in skyway. I was such a noob sometimes.

I remember when level 20 was a big accomplishment.

I remember getting 1000 xp for finishing the synapse TF and thinking to myself, 'wow, that's a lot'. I did that TF 3 times before ever hitting 20.

I remember having to zone 3 times to see if anyone your level was looking for a team.

I remember how cool it was to fly for the first time.

I remember when ICON hit Paragon, and the massive lag-inducing dance parties in front of them. I also remember how hard it was to find tsoo that day . I spent every ounce of influence I had just to pay for that second costume.

I remember the katana animations geting changed, and suddenly liking my scrapper again (even if I am still a little miffed about it being left handed ).

I remember doing the respec many, many, many times on both test and live, and only getting one success out of it all. Then they changed it soon after and I was a bit disappointed at how easy it was to breeze through.

I remember the rikti sword bug, and getting one-shot by a -5.

I remember laughing at all the winter lord babies crying about how hard missions were when the event faded away.

I remember stepping into Peregrine Island for the first time in my 30's, just to explore.... and getting killed by snipers before ever getting off the ferry.

I remember wishing the snipers to be put back in PI after seeing a bunch of single digit heroes sitting on the ferry.

I remember taking on Infernal for the very first time at level 45, only to find out the praetorians spawn at a minimum of 48. It took our 44-45 team a good while to do it, and many deaths from our ice tanker, but we finally pulled it off. One of my favorite game experiences ever.

I remember...

...meeting Tilnak at the end of Beta in FF. By then he was already a legend. I don't know, but they said he started the first herding runs in Beta.

...herding Wolves and dumpster diving, Crazed and corner standing, Ninja ambushes, Kraken herding, Crey herding in Bricks, and herding everything in Axis America! Ahh, the droning loudspeaker's of the Axis. It would eventually get on your nerves, but kicking Axis butt never got old.

...when just zoning into Perez was a slide-show and you couldn't wait to stumble out of it.

...the Perez Park massacre's at the AP gate when a team retreated training mobs across those standing nearby "LFT".

...when the mission that spawned the Kronos Titan was in Perez and how he would annihilate all the lowbies that got too close. And the "Trouble-Alerts" going off in all the higher level SGs to gather and take him down pronto. It was kind of fun and immersive to go help out the low levels so they could get back to their fortune teller missions.

...at the end of Beta with the Rikti mother ships- just like Independence Day- flying over the zones at the end of Beta. And trying to get up onto the mothership hovering over Talos only to find the image was somewhere above the ceiling of the map.

...taking two days off work to take full advantage of the three day head start and hardly sleeping or leaving the house.

...hitting my tanking stride while tanking level 40 CoT for a group of 35ish team members along the riverwalk in Founder's. I was level 27. This was before the puple patch when powers didn't scale because of level difference.

...Perm-Unstoppable. And the two minute egg-timer I used to time when it would drop. Even with the timer sometimes the timing would be just a second of two off. I died so many more times by my own distraction and missing an unstoppable cycle than I ever have since. But talk about fun! I would sweat bullets sometimes over trying to keep my eye on that timer.

...when Regen was so good- too good, of course- that my scrapper could tank for an entire team of 50S and solo most AV's.

...trying to farm CoS mission for Phantasms to get the badge with some friends back when Unstoppable was stationary. Only their psychic cut through my INV tanker so badly. I tried to TP to the door to exit before biting it, only they got me before the animation finished. You could almost hear the laughter over my dying TP!

...street sweeping was the method of choice. TF were bugged and you often could not get the contacts to give you the next leg of the TF.

...often stopping by the enhancement store only to find a Tsoo Sorcerer or two inside. This happened a lot at the Mutant/Science stores in Talos and IP's Science store.

Hmmm, I don't know if I missed that or if it's just a mental defense mechanism kicking in....

I just did my quarterly reflection post. "Other players", "fight evil", "aliens", and "streets" are all from beta.

I remember my first post on the Pre-Beta forums about heroes from other countries needing passports.... Man, did the post ever get flamed! That wasn't the intention of the thread mind you.

I joined the forums when I got High-Speed back in Jan., 2002. It was a time of constant 'Orange Alert' and all that Jazz. I needed to find out if what was happening was going to trickle into the game, and how the posters thought of the concept.

I'm glad that people, regardless of country of origin (i.e. USA, Canada, Germany, etc.), was against it. After all, heroes from around the world gathered to help Paragon City (and the world) in it's greatest need.

I remember how much of a pain in the but it was to figure out how to reserve character names from Beta due to the ever changing rules.... I was too busy trying to get my highest level character up in level for the Rikti Invasion endgame to keep up with the changes.

I remember when Super Reflexes was one of the worst powersets to have (but I took it anyway, but ended up deleting the character for other reasons even though it seemed ok to me..., at least at the level he was at).

I remember the first demands that Super Lanes be opened up (who wasn't inspired by the sign with the woman doing a flying kick on the bowling pins???).

I remember how the powers were going to be selected, through a weighted method, depending on your origin (the number of powers you had depended on origin, but fewer powers you had the more powerful the powers were to be).

I remember at that time, it was planned to have handguns as a power and it was first determined that it's when you click on a weapon power that it shows up, so there's no need for an inventory (or sheaths/holsters).

I remember Color-blind (sp?) Man!

I remember how difficult it was to level up faster than other players in my main SG, there was no such thing as Sidekicks and Exemplars. That's why the SG came up with a two character/SG member rule, so the lower level SG members can still team up with the ones with higher level characters.

I remember how much of a pain it was to try to figure out how to find my contacts after they were distributed from Galaxy City and Atlas Park into other zones (such as KR and Steel City).

I remember one of my first Level boost in Beta, it was because of Jose being broken (as a previous poster said). One of my characters out-leveled his contact as a result, and at that time I couldn't get a new contact. I petitioned it, and was told that there was nothing could be done, so the only thing I could do for that character is to rely on other players to play missions or do hunting (which in those days, hunting means 'good luck in ever leveling your guy').

I'm glad they fixed it so you can still get the next contact even if you inadvertantly skipped one.

I definitely remember the demand for cowbells as a costume option.

I remember demands for cat ears for males, moving tails, actual glowing eyes like the Contaminated and CoT (let alone capes, jetpacks, wings, etc.).

I remember seeing some skins of Statesman available in one of the Freedom Force skins sites. There was a brief blurb under a lot of the skins describing the character skins. At the time, they were interesting, but that was around the time when I've heard about a certain computer development team that was looking for a publisher to be able to make a new (and the only one at the time) superhero-based MMO....

I remember when the pre-beta boards had some of the more vocal members of the forums being Moderators.

I remember joining a bunch of my main SG mates in the first Villain SG, The Circle of Twelve. And yes, that was before City of Villains was announced, and before CoH went into Beta. Both characters I made for it (one based on a villain I'd made long before City of Heroes, and one made just for it; I couldn't decide which one to have as a member for the SG) are now in my stable of CoV villains.

But holy carpp, I forgot about the cows. They were in release weren't they? I believe I remember them because you could click them for a mmoooo. Can someone refresh me on which zone they were in?

And Castle, will you add 'filler' for the zones like the cows back to the game someday?

I remember when the game was in beta I was amazed at the potential CoH had as a groundbreaking game.

I remember when it was pushed back a year when the devs sadly found out that their entire power and AT system was fundamentally flawed and they SCRAPPED THE WHOLE THING and started over again from scratch. (Much to the horror of all of us hoping that it wouldn't cause CoH to get cancelled).

I remember when CoH went retail and I was in the head-start wondering where CoH would be in 2 years.

I remember meeing Killer Whale and him giving me a fishie during a RP session when I was but a wee combat kitten. Thanks KW =^.^=

2+ years later, all the good old times from then that I can remember, even only having 1 lvl 50 to this day, could easily turn into a list rivalling the worst research paper any grad has ever done. While I haven't had the pleasure, and sometimes pain, to experience everything posted here (and them some),

wow that's alot of memories!

I remember when my brother first bought this game and sat down and played it right in front of me. I got so mad 'cause he wouldn't let me play for days. Finally he let me sit down to play, and I got hooked instantly. My first toon of course was a gimped claws/super reflex scrapper. Way back in the days before badges. I remember playing for a little while, running into +1 mobs and getting dropped instantly. Of course back then, SR sucked, Claws were gimped, and I didn't have a clue how to build my scrapper. Only reason I stuck with him was 'cause I'm to stubborn to quit once I start something.

I remember when I3 was on test, and I saw my first Peace Bringer and instantly thought "Must have..." (I was only level 16ish at the time) And seeing all the cool powers he had. Then joining his team and going to fight Lusca for the first time only to discover that the squid wasn't spawning.

*Sighs* now you can't go into IP with out at least 2 or 3 Lusca's up at a time.

I remember When I first went into Brickstown when I was level 18ish SKed to a level 35ish tank and discovering quickly that Fly was no longer the safest travel power.

I remember going into DA for the first time and instantly falling in love with the overall look of the zone.

I remember the days before constant nerfs caused being an SR scrapper to be an extremely hard thing to acomplish.(Think ED. I've never been able to play the same way again...)

I remember running the Synapse TF and running into Babage for the first time(yeah, I think he was bigger back then... ) And after having half the team drop after only the first mission, having to run for our lives from the giant junk pile. 4 people was not enough for him, we couldn't even scratch him...

I remember hearing over and over how great Regen was and always wanting to try it but then thinking I was better of not going near it 'cause it kept getting the axe.

I remember the first hearding team I was ever on in Perez Park, this was shortly after I had finally gotten my Peace Bringer, and seeing first hand just how massive the damage was from a combo of blasters and PBs/WSs shooting the heck out of a group of 30 or so Skulls and Hellions. That was the first time I truly knew what a tank could do in terms of holding agro and not dieing.

I remember when stone tanks looked like poo, and ice tanks were a rarity.(now you see them all the time cause of thier PvP uberness and the Def scaling fix)

I remember Paragon Dance Party and how it was a more exclusive place to hold costume contests and the like, or just sit around and chat with people, 'cause only a hand full of people ever knew where it was at any givin time.

I remember going to the main CoH site and reading the Paragon times and trying to pick out as much information as I could to find out what the Devs were planing with the updates. I remember when they demolished big sections of Steel Canyon and Founders Falls for the implementation of the skills system in the college campus' which ended up just being a zone remodeling since the Devs felt the Skills system wasn't fun enough to put in, and thus was shelved in favor of the invention system later on.

I remember when (I think it was Lord Recluse and Cuppa) were pulling together massive SGs to test the SG vs SG battles in the arena. Never did find out who won, couldn't get into either SG at the time... (I was too busy stareing in awe at the Mass hoard of heroes in galaxy city, and the lagtastic result ) Oh and I think it was Lord Recluse(or who ever it was) had every single blaster power in his info. Saying simply "it was a dev tool" to anyone who asked about it.

Now get offa my lawn ya wipper snappers!

Yeah, I think that's pretty close to what happened.

Basically as I understand, the Devs reallized a careless player could easily make a character that was so gimped it would be lucky to solo a single cog at level 1 and have any success, where as the inteligent players would go with the FoTM and be unstopable gods by comparisen.

They felt the way it worked before was too broken and had too many things that could go wrong with building your character, making it either over powered, or just plain pathetic. Think along the lines of Superman versus The Flea in that wrestling cartoon on cartoon network. (I can't seem to remember the name of the show...)
